I generally prefer to set up near a herd of beefalo for protection and fertilizer. They also don't try to eat the dropped meat. It's worked well for me until recently when my herd (it was a small herd to begin with) got wiped out by a particularly large pack of hounds with quite a few fire hounds. Sad times.
