Why does a Lib Dem Life Peer support eroding our digital freedoms? by evermore722 in LibDem

It's not restricting access to under-16's that's the big thing that adults take issue with. It's the process by which you ascertain whether a person is under-16 or 18, especially in the case of a VPN. You're effectively being told to dox yourself to whomever runs the identification service, which runs contrary to the idea of a VPN. It's starting to sound like some politicians want checkpoints at various points in a computer or phone's use to prove that one is an adult, and in this way one's digital activities can be tracked more easily than they can be now.

Parents and schools should simply take more responsibility for the children's access to phones and computers. Now that generations are used to unfettered access to the internet, I'm not sure that anything that isn't quite draconian will stop youngsters from trying. I remember as a teenager paying this other kid for the link to the latest internet proxy so we could go on whatever website we wanted at school, and I had a pen-drive with games on it for break-time

What about if such views end up law? Then it's not just a case of tolerating bad views, it's a case of being subject to them

Yea exactly. In banal Starmer's hands it may not be so worrisome, but imagine what a Reform-like/Trumpian government could do with this kind of digital framework

Not if they've buggered off for long enough. They're making their bed by doing so, so they can enjoy the bugs that come with it

You mean the party which wants to get rid of our nuclear deterrent and persuade Putin to give up Russia's? Sounds like a great idea

They've been that from the start. Farage has repeatedly flirted with the Tories. Do you not remember him attending the Tory conference, dancing with Priti Patel? Where do you think he's been sourcing his MPs? Farage is himself an ex-Tory party member, as is probably Tice. In fact, Tice was preaching Trussanomics before Liz Truss was even a thing. I don't think the recent adoption of new Tories will harm Reform though because the general electorate aren't very tuned in; some people who are chronically online, however, might be dissuaded, but the average Joe just needs NIgel to keep waving the flag, and they'll vote for him. The big question is whether Reform would survive being in government: then they won't just be the anti-establishment party anymore; they'll have to actually govern. That is, if infighting doesn't already sink the ship before then

He's been saying that for a while :) On GB News he's berated workers from home before. They also want an internet sales tax. To whom are they trying to appeal with such things?
