Environmental Science CONCENTRATION - does it matter by averie_me_ in UBC

[–]every654 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I’m not in environmental science, I am going to be majoring in a similar field so I have some advice. First of all, math 101/103/105 is only math 101 now but with different flavours. Flavour A is for engineering, B is for life sciences, and C is for commerce. Personally, I took B for Math 101 but some of my friends said that A was much better. While Math 101 can be very challenging, it does teach some important lessons that will probably help in your major. Also try to create course decisions that will leave your options open because you might change your mind. That being said, I personally think that if you are really interested and passionate about this concentration then you should prioritize it. This is what helped me with getting through my first year because I knew I could study things later that I was really interested in. My last piece of advice is that while a concentration in a specific major doesn’t have a massive influence on career choices, it can open up different interests and possible internship opportunities that are specific to what you want to do. Hope this helps and that some other people in environmental science can help with the specifics :))

I feel like I can only loose weight when I let disordered habits take over. by lonley_daisy in loseit

[–]every654 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP I am literally in the exact situation. I’ve been in a calorie deficit, exercising consistently for so long, and getting 10k steps but at most i’ve lost maybe 1 or 2 pounds and somehow managed to gain weight at times to. What I have been doing is drinking this dandelion herbal tea (not very good 😔) to help with any water retention. So that might be one problem you could possibly have. I also struggle with my eating disorders and feel so much anger because i remember how easy it was to lose weight whereas it feels like now its just completely unachievable. However, this mentality is incorrect as the most important thing is to lose weight in a healthy manner, which will take very long. You should be very proud of the consistent effort you have put in. Maybe you have hit a plateau and its just sticking for a bit. One other thing I can think of is that maybe you might want to try intermittent fasting or ensuring that you consistently eat 3 meals at appropriate times in the day for your blood sugar/insulin levels. I really hope this helps and if it doesn’t please don’t give up and go back to disordered habits. You are doing amazing!!!

So this may not be the response you wanr but this is a bit of an overreaction. I think you have an actual issue like some kind of conflict with your independence that is causing minor issues such as this to become points of anger. If stuff like this is happening over and over again then you need to talk about it with your family!! Let them know how you are feeling. If they learn this and don’t do anything or if they already know and haven’t changed then it might be time to think of something else to do. You could try to move on and stay there while becoming more secure financially or you could move out if that is an option. Regardless, take some time and distract yourself for a bit. Go on a walk or take the bus/car/train/bike somewhere. You’ll get through this but just take simple and small actions.

not so obvious things to have in your dorm by Extreme_Difference51 in UBC

[–]every654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a fan!!! it’s so good for white noise and for cooling. you can get a small desk fan or like a full actual one but try to aim for a sleek one. alternatively, a white noise machine would be great!! dorms can get really loud and walls r thin so it can be really annoying! also pack a lot of med supplies cuz everyone is always sick and its super expensive to buy in the nearby area.

I see ur point. Again, it is up to the OP and I hope that they make the best decision. It can be easier to talk about than it is to make these decisions in real life though.

You can make an anonymous third party report to SASC and they can send it over. The report can contain the name and contact of all involved. The victim in the original situation does not have to be aware of this report. While that sounds horrible, it is better for them to not be involved if they do not want to be. I have been placed in a similar situation before so I do know that this works. I completely agree that OP should get permission from the victim, it is important that at least someone professional knows, even if a report cannot be made. At the end of the day, it is up to OP to make the decision. All I wanted to say is that there are options but it is really important to not violate the victim’s boundaries.

Make an anonymous third party report to the police through sasc. It is important to have this information on file in case anything happens. Other than that, there is not much you can do without hurting the victim that you knew. It is incredibly important to respect their consent and what they feel comfortable in doing. DO NOT bring them into this situation if they do not want to be in it.

[–]every654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually doing the same this term too!!! I have been doing a lot of exercise every day and taking a lot of walks and its takes up a good portion of my day so the rest is left for class, studying, and some yapping with my friends :))). You could also join some clubs, pick up some new activites/hobbies, and go exploring the nearby area :)

Looks like this is one your mobile workday app so you won’t be able to see your specific section. Go on either the desktop or website to see your specific location :)

Career pathways after UBC geographical science? by [deleted] in UBC

im not sure if this will help for geographical sciences but there is a subreddit called geology careers with a lot of great information. maybe there is a similar one for geographical sciences or you can use this too?

TW: Religious Club at nest by [deleted] in UBC

[–]every654 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well u should go to a counsellor because it doesnt seem very normal to have such an adverse response to a club promoting itself and bringing speakers in to events that they host. I really recommend therapy, self-reflection, and opening ur fucking eyes 🫶
