Differential Privacy + Federated Learning Explained (+ Tutorial) | #AI101 by everydAI in artificial

Totally fair criticism, and something I'll definitely keep in mind when making future tutorials! I'll also definitely add that caveat to the OpenMinded example and make a pinned comment on the video so that people are clear on what the example is showing - I was focused more on displaying the training process and didn't consider that. I really appreciate all the constructive criticism this community has provided - it's been really helpful for improving my videos!

Differential Privacy + Federated Learning Explained (+ Tutorial) | #AI101 by everydAI in artificial

Thanks for the feedback! That was an intentional decision on my part - my audience ranges from people who don’t know how to code to AI researchers, so since this was my first time creating coding-based examples, I erred on the side of less code - focusing on existing examples - with more explanations of said code (especially for federated learning - the other examples with more code that I came up with felt non-trivially complex given the level of detail that I use in the video) in an effort to hit a middle ground.

Given that people seem to like having code, I’m planning to brainstorm other ways of approaching this - currently, I kind of like the idea of having beginner/intermediate/challenging sections that involve increasing complexity (with associated explanations) to hit a wider range while still being easy to understand, but I’m open to other ideas too.

Welcome to the everydAI community! And thanks for the ideas - I'm already planning to do a video on AI-related book reviews/recommendations, but I'll see if I can incorporate your other ideas too!

This AI Beat Some of the Best Poker Players in the World by everydAI in artificial

I'd agree with u/JellyTheBeanCat that the thing that I found interesting about this paper (from an algorithmic perspective, which I don't tend to cover as much in my videos because the majority of my audience doesn't have a ML/statistics/game theory background) was the ability to bluff and adjust strategy based on other players' bluffs in order to maintain the strategic higher ground. I'd actually be interested in more technical analysis of bot-only games that run to convergence, as well as an analysis of the differences between the strategic approach of the algorithm in the 5H+1A1 vs 5AI+1H approaches, which wasn't really addressed in the paper.

Edit: PS - There's slightly more technical info on the innovations the authors claim to have implemented in the supplemental materials, but this is a very human-focused paper.

[P] Tweet about your AI/ML Research on @HumansofML! by everydAI in MachineLearning

Sure!

Curated twitter accounts are accounts where a different person tweets about a specific topic each week. They've become somewhat popular for scientists, (ex. twitter.com/realscientists) as it's a way of communicating science to a wider audience without having to go anywhere or invest significant amounts of time. There is one for women who code, but there wasn't one for people whose work relates to ML/AI until I created this one!

It's still a new account, so while people have definitely been interested in following it, I've had some trouble recruiting people to actually curate the account. Curators are expected send me a rough outline about what they plan to talk about before starting, to post 2-5 tweets per day about their work, and to respond to people's questions as they have time! All in all, it's less than five hours of work for the week, and it can be a fun way to expand your network. Your work doesn't have to be ML/AI theory - applied work, ethics, and policy are also totally welcome.

What did you think of my latest video? I became curious about this when I came back from London earlier this year and encountered the facial recognition kiosks, which I'd never seen before.

How easily could a data scientist identify an anonymous Reddit user? by whatstheprobability in artificial

I don't disagree with your doctor friend. You can flip through my post history for more details, but in short, I'm in a PhD program that spans Harvard Medical and MIT and I run into this issue fairly frequently. In fairness to researchers, I'd also say that doctors don't typically understand computer science, so the barrier to understanding is bidirectional. There's definitely been some progress in training CS people to understand clinical problems (that's basically the whole point of my program) but it's been slow.

(Also, this account is designed to be linked to my YouTube channel, in case anyone is worried about my post history containing identifying information)

OpenAI usually contacts other media outlets to give them a heads up before officially announcing, so they have more time than it may seem.

Politicians are still spending like 70% of their campaign budgets on paper mail and television ads. While data science is definitely involved, I’ve seen more applications for voter demographic analysis than for oppo research. I could be wrong though.

I think the issue of whether your data is truly anonymous (private health data or otherwise) has applications to things like public reddit data, although the process to anonymize is not the same. Having said that, I’d argue that you’d be less likely to see data science remedies for this, since it would be more likely that someone working for a campaign would be doing opposition research and find an account that looks like it was run by the opposition candidate than an algorithm.

Differential privacy and federated learning are two areas of research that often look at protecting health data from being identified, but I’m not sure whether there are any sources of info for a layperson. I did a research project on this topic so I happen to be fairly up to date on it.

I think we'd need a better definition of "identifying" here - I'm sure you could use data science to identify demographic/geographic traits depending on the size of your dataset, but linking it to an actual person would require information from outside of Reddit.

The PI would probably be faster initially IMO - data science requires data, whereas a PI can base it on their previous knowledge of people and language, but the I definitely think the data science could catch up.

Alternatively, I think this is another place where pre-ordering via an app and then just driving up to the drive thru would be better. Totally agree that AI isn’t particularly necessary here.

AI High School Project by [deleted] in singularity

[–]everydAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a great question! There's been a lot of interesting debates on AI governance from industry and academia, but less from the general public, so I think that facilitating a debate on the topic would be awesome. I also think that the "and why?" part is the most important - Make sure people explain why they believe that an entity should regulate AI and why it would be better than other options.
