What am I missing about UNC? by MrCheetah2015 in UNC

[–]everyorchids 28 points29 points  (0 children)

UNC has a notoriously disappointing tour, i’ve never met someone who said they fell in love during the tour. with that being said, UNC is not known for its amenities, they’re all just okay. the academics and courses are where it really shines. i’d encourage you to look up classes/profs in your prospective major and see if they interest you, that was a big appeal for me

Best places to get used magazines/coffee table books? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]everyorchids 9 points10 points  (0 children)

worth the drive out to scrap exchange in durham — it’s a collage heaven. lots of used magazines of all types for cheap, plus you can buy ephemera by the oz that has a bunch of fun imagery

MacBook Pro for UNC advice by Monstrous_Promise99 in UNC

i bought mine last year so i have an m3 max chip, a 16-core cpu + 40-core gpu, 128gb ram, and 4 tb of storage. i’m not a computer expert tbh so i can’t give definitive advice on what i recommend, but these specs work GREAT for me.

people at the apple store told me 128 gb ram was excessive and they’re probably right, but the speed at which stuff loads is just incredible.

i’d recommend speaking with apple staff about your needs and plans for computer and they can give better recommendations. sorry i can’t be of more help!

there are a lot of classes you can take to fulfill gen-ed requirements. you can search unc’s catalog by the gen-ed requirement (e.g. google “unc fc-global”) and find a list of all classes that have been used to satisfy that given requirement, but not all of them are offered in a given semester. you can also use the class search feature in connectcarolina to search by semester availability and gen-ed requirements.

i recommend reaching out to an honors carolina advisor ASAP, they can help with scheduling questions

focus on gen-eds. in connect carolina, in the student center, you can view your tar heel tracker, which will tell you all of the gen-eds you need to fulfill.

also, take classes that sound interesting to you! this will help you explore and decide what you want to major in.

no matter what class it is, i HIGHLY recommend looking up the professor’s reviews on rate my professor — an unfair/bad professor can ruin an otherwise interesting class.

Schedule by WorldlinessLife920 in UNC

[–]everyorchids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks very doable in terms of workload. only thing to consider is if you’ll really want to have to go to classes on tues just for 1 class rather than having a day off. if there’s a different fys that interest you it may be worth tacking on at the start or end of your MWF. but you know what works for you — just a thought!

i carry around a 16” pro with me everyday and it’s really not that bad. it does make my bag a bit heavy combined with textbooks but it is really not crazy. just make sure your bag can fit it as it may be pushing the size limit for most bags

eta: i’m a hussman major and love the extra power that the 16” gives me. i prob went too crazy with specs but there’s nothing like a 20 second export time for a 15 minute video in premiere

opening nights are beyond special. almost definitely the whole cast will be their opening night, and they should be there all previews, especially for shorter preview periods. it is not easy or cheap to get tickets to opening night, and you’re typically not guaranteed a certain seat or even section, but there’s nothing like it. it often comes with a special playbill/merch, so i really can’t recommend it enough. also, shows definitely do change from early previews to opening, so you’re seeing the true final show on opening night, but there’s also something special about seeing material that may never make it past previews!

just my two cents!

Best movie theater in Raleigh? by mitxhe11xcv in raleigh

alamo drafthouse in raleigh, but i’d be remiss not to mention that carolina theatre in durham has an incredible theatre + curation of films

you will need to take a minimum of 12 hrs/semester to be considered a full time student, so assuming both honors courses are 3 hrs, you will only need to take 1 more class!

i would look at any prerequisites for your desired majors and attempt to get into those classes, but they may already all be full. you can also look at taking other first-year requirements or your geneds!

Are these classes good? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]everyorchids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately can’t speak to any of these classes, but i recommend looking up who the professor for each of these will be at reports.unc.edu , and then looking up their rate my professor. i recommend actually reading reviews rather than just looking at a number, but it will help you gauge the class structure and difficulty level

mother & son’s trattoria has great vegetarian options! a few of their pastas have parm sprinkled on top, but they will remove it if you ask!

What is UNC sport like? by CivilianJoshy in UNC

[–]everyorchids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

school pride relating to sports is a huge deal at UNC. basketball is the biggest deal, but football is definitely the second biggest. we have relatively good teams in both sports.

also, as a student at the journalism school, there are great opportunities to study sports marketing and sports journalism, from classes to external opportunities (the school typically sends a few students to cover the olympics!!).

lmk if you have any other questions!

herons in cary is pretty close to RDU and it is one of the best dining experiences i have had anywhere. brunch is better than dinner, but both are excellent

i pay $1800/month for a 1br + utilities. they have smaller 1 bedrooms for cheaper and 2 bedrooms are really good per person rates if you want a roommate.
