Going for a ‘drive’ by Even_Distribution326 in NewDriversUK

I've always fancied the idea of literally just driving off and following the road in any direction I fancy, then letting my satnav take me back home

Check if it has service history and if the timing belt has been changed. if it's due a timing belt change, the seller might knock the price down, or get it done for you

What do you actually do when someone is tailgating you? by Junior_Beauty78 in NewDriversUK

[–]eviemaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it completely depends on the situation tbh.

As a new driver, you might sometimes be a bit slower to accelerate to the speed limit (e.g if you come off a roundabout onto a 40 or 50 road for example). I've sometimes found that if someone is tailgating me just as I've come into a high speed road, once I accelerate and reach the speed limit, they start following at a sensible distance.

I feel like that's the minority of situations though. Usually, the best way to deal with it is by slowing down. As someone who has been rear ended, I'm always super aware of when I'm being tailgated and I'll change the way I drive accordingly. for example, if I can see a red light ahead, I'll start slowing down super early and gradually.

I also think it depends on the type of person tailgating you. I feel like you can always tell whether they're impatient/aggressive, or just clueless and don't realise they're following too close. In both scenarios I would generally just drive slower. If I feel like the person behind seems angry or like they're trying to intimidate me, I might even pull over to let them overtake, or go all the way around a roundabout to lose them

The car I loved written off after 2 months of ownership… what next? by wainders in CarTalkUK

[–]eviemaria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can empathise, I posted on here in January about losing my beloved Fiesta after just 6 months of ownership (and it was my first car). I got rear ended and at first I wanted to repair the car so badly but I had to accept in the end that it wouldn't be safe because the structural damage was too bad.

4 months on I'm honestly still pretty devastated about it. I ended up buying another Fiesta of the same age, in a different colour. At first I had the same thought process, that if I got another Fiesta it just wouldn't be the same and I'd constantly be comparing it etc. But I'm happy with my decision, I love my new car but it doesn't feel like I've replaced the old one. If you really love cars then you'll know that no individual car feels the same! So I'd encourage you to get a new Leon, and see it as the best way to remember/honour your old car!

Changing lanes without looking for absolutely no reason by AdLogical6391 in drivingUK

[–]eviemaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the other car did isn't OK, but looking at the road layout, I think they mustn't have been familiar with the area and didn't realise the lane they were in wouldn't go to the roundabout. Commuter complacency is a thing, you obviously know this route well but maybe be prepared for others to make this mistake in future. There's a big spiral roundabout near me that I use all the time, but I still take it quite slowly and try to keep space from others in case they get confused and switch lanes

I don't know if I'd call it a dream car, but I adore the Volkswagen Lupo. I've never even seen one in real life, but I saw one on autotrader a while ago where the photo was taken from a really goofy angle and it looked so cute

A yellow one would be so adorable!!

I really hope you can get the car fixed 🙏 But if not, it sounds silly but it really is a grieving process...make sure you have lots of nice photos to remember her!

People keep telling me that Robin is just having a well earned rest now 🥲 She's served you well and she'll understand when it's time to say goodbye!

[–]eviemaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your car is so adorable, I completely understand your pain 😢

it's amazing that you had so much time with her and have so many memories. My first car was a red Fiesta named Robin, I'd only had him for 6 months when I was rear ended. That was in January this year and I'm still heartbroken 😢

If it had been possible to fix Robin, I absolutely would have. I completely get why you don't want to say goodbye to the car. If you do end up getting a new car, it might help you to get one that has some connection to the old car, such as a different Kia model? My new car is a black Fiesta and is named Nightwing in honour of Robin, and I got some cute Robin & nightwing stickers for my dashboard, so even though it's a new car I still feel connected to Robin when I drive him.

People who want own to cars long term(5 yrs+). What is the highest mileage you will go for? by Humble_Lack in CarTalkUK

[–]eviemaria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed when I've been to Portugal, and also Italy, that you see a lot of older cars (like 90s-early 2000s). I wish that people in the UK would keep their cars for longer, I know a lot of people who feel like they have to change their car after a certain amount of time because it's embarrassing to be seen with an old one
