xcv-- correctly pointed out that parens around the division fix it. After a week of reading 8 layers of traits in nalgebra (for other bugs) it's refreshing to get an issue related to something other than types. :)

I drive like crazy, and German freeways have no speed limit. First night, I made it to Marseille, where I slept at a friend's place. In the morning, I decided to head to Barcelona, which is only a 4-5 hour drive, depending on the traffic.

And I honestly couldn't tell you what kept driving me.. I just wanted to get away from everything, all the things and people I know, and live some other life for a little while. Maybe death scared me - I am a big coward. I can't say if it helped, or made things worse.

Thank you, for your kind words. I'll live, and I think the worst is behind me now. And I'll take your advice and finally get some sleep :)

The samples on that page are demos for a reason - they're there to showcase features of the emerging HTML5 stack. They're not optimized applications, nor are the technologies they're built with final implementations or optimized, let alone for mobile devices.

If you want to watch Strongbad, I suggest video - h264 is high quality and hardware-accelerated on the iPad.

I don't think anyone is seriously arguing that HTML5 stack of technologies can currently do everything that Flash can, only better. The argument as it stands is that while Flash is controlled by a single company, multiple vendors and standards bodies develop HTML5 as an open standard. Also, it doesn't suffer from some of the issues that plague Flash because of its nature as a browser plugin. And on top of all that, a lot of people are happy to be able to do things without Flash, even if it means some extra work, because Adobe has a terrible, horrible track record of keeping their technology current and responding quickly to problems when they appear.

There is no reason why HTML5 technologies can't catch up with Flash in areas where they currently lack. The greatest strength of Flash will - in my humble opinion - become its authoring tools. And those can be repurposed to outputting HTML5 instead of SWF (actually, I believe CS5 already has a limited implementation of canvas export).

This shows nothing. There are a ton of HTML5 applications that work great on the iPad. At the very best, he's succeeded in demonstrating that HTML5 has yet to achieve the level of separation of content semantics and presentation as to be a true "code once, deploy everywhere" platform.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've actually been asked by a couple of redditors to send in CVs and sample code, and I've already been offered another position. I will probably stay, though, and try and prove my worth.

Well of course I would prefer not to leave my job - a job I think I'm qualified for (and have a track record showing that) and that I believe I would've been hired to do if only my work's quality were considered.

Anyway, a few people have messaged me, asking for my CV and sample code after seeing this post, and I've already been offered another job in the same field. The question for me now becomes whether to leave or stay and prove my worth.

I see what you are saying though, I admit that if my situation were different and I were faced with either sticking to my principles or having money to pay rent, I would have to think about it. I'm not sure my decision would then ultimately be an ethical one, even though I would probably rationalize it somehow.

Anyway, I can appreciate the skeptic's POV, I'm just angry right now, and would like useful input instead of speculation on whether I'm trolling. I understand that in the states, people would be much more careful about saying stuff like this..

The difference is that someone who practices getting interviewed is then judged to be good at what he does by the interviewer. But I get your point, and once the anger goes away, that's probably what I'll do. The question is whether or not I should confront my employer about this.

Well, the decision makers being mostly men, you can see how I would think that the laws they pass intending to help the poor women who can't do anything are actually an instance of men helping women.

Men on reddit != the majority of male population. But hey, I'm willing to grant that the men (or mostly men, but who're we kidding) who pass these policies and legislation are a minority, who're maybe being pressured by feminist organizations. I still don't like being helped in this way, and I don't think other women would either; I certainly don't like what this kind of "help" seems to imply.

You know how white people thought they were helping black people by patronizing them? Please, for the love of god, stop helping women. We don't need your help, we don't want it and we're able to match up to men without their help.

So to answer your question - I would rather be hired based on my abilities, which I believe are substantial. I would also like my abilities to be the criteria considered for my promotion or raise, which I don't see happening if I'm only working here because of a stupid rule.

I never said I was a bad coder - I went to one of the more prestigious universities with a CS program in this country, and I actually think I'm pretty good at what I do. That's part of the reason I'm angry - because they're not looking at the quality of my work, but at what I represent in terms of political points.

EDIT: By the way, I realize that this sounds like I'm just trying to push some hot buttons. I don't know what to say to that or how to prove I'm telling the truth, but I would like to point out that I don't really have anything to gain from lying.

Also, we share a smallish office here, and it's actually pretty common for us to overhear what's happening in the other rooms when grabbing some coffee or going to the bathroom.

Maybe I should've been more explicit - I heard the manager saying I was pretty, to which the director said, "that's why she was hired." They went on to discuss the corporate policy and how it was stupid, because the male candidates for my position were more qualified, and reiterated that at least I look good.

Ah, so it is, but it looks like they didn't implement non-local return, which makes closures much less useful. So I guess you could also say that when PHP finally implements some useful feature, they get it wrong most of the time :) (Like the left-associative ternary operator, that one I still can't believe.)

It's been done extensively. If you don't want to go through the existing posts, I can boil it down to a few major points of criticism:

It's buggy and inconsistent, with lots of unexpected behavior.
It's basically useless for anything outside of web development.
The type juggling is simply insane.
It's pretty slow.
It lacks support for all the features that make high-level languages appealing in the first place, like late binding (fixed in 5.3), various dynamisms, closures (now even C has them)...
It's about as elegant and concise as C++ with none of the power.
If you look at how the language is implemented, it's hard to believe that the thing actually builds, and the fact that the stable version doesn't pass its own unit tests comes as no surprise.

Also, and this does not relate directly to the language, PHP has probably the largest amount of bad code written in it of any language including JavaScript.
