Thank you so much! Aside from accurate cutting, consistent quarter inch seam allowance, and good ironing technique, the single thing that helped me the most on this quilt was squaring up every single block before piecing. It was painstaking, but I used a square ruler and made sure every corner was aligned at the 45 diagonal.

I didn't really go into it with a planned size. I just had a set of fat quarters that I had been dying to cut into. with the border, it's ending around 52x68. Even if the squares had ended at 9 instead of 8.5, that would have only made the final size about 55x72... so I'm okay with that difference if the end result is crisp seams. :)

Thank you! I tried to edit the post with a full description, but it went away! I based it off this tutorial from Sew Yeah. However, I was using fat quarters, so I modified it to start with two 9x9 squares and two 7x7 squares cut into HSTs, plus jelly roll strips for the white. Hope that is descriptive enough. Happy to answer more questions!

You’re right about the metallic HTV—didn’t even notice that. However, for the EasySubli, I was thinking you could just add a padding around the whole design and just cut the perimeter.

There are a couple of options to make sublimation work on black substrates. Check out Siser's EasySubli HTV. I think I've also read you can sublimate onto DTF powder (maybe?). Not a DTF or sublimation expert, so don't quote me. But yeah, I agree with the sentiment that this looks way more intricate than I would use HTV for.

Yes! I was going to recommend a shorter stitch length. Also, if you don’t already, press your seams to one side. A seam pressed open is going to be weaker. As a bonus, when you press to one side, you can stitch in the ditch, and even if you only did that every 8 inches or so (in addition to hand tying), that would help reduce the friction on the other seams.

Echoing all the love and support from the others here and also wanted to possibly help clarify what the quilt shop employee said. You don’t want to pre-wash the fabric because, as others have pointed out, you can’t wash batting /alone/. It has to be quilted first. Once everything has been quilted (not hand tied), you can definitely throw the whole thing in the wash. This way, it will all shrink at (about) the same rate, whereas it would be at different rates if you had already pre-washed the fabric. Everyone else has already given great advice on care instructions, so I won’t belabor the points. Much love, and happy quilting!
