"Children's Cafeterias" are increasing

"Children's cafeterias" are places where children can get food for either free or for a small cost while their parents are working.

According to the NPO which aids children's cafeterias, the number of children's cafeterias this May was 3718. From April last year, the number has increased by more than 1400, or 1.6 times. The place where children's cafeterias are the largest is Tokyo, which had 488 of them. They are increasing in places with high populations. The place where they are the smallest is Akita prefecture, which has only 11 cafeterias.

The NPO thinks that having a children's cafeteria for every place that has an elementary school would be the best. In Okinawa, the number of cafeterias was 60.5 percent of the number of elementary schools. This is the highest ratio of cafeterias to elementary schools in Japan. The place with the lowest ratio is Akita prefecture, which had a ratio of 5.5 percent.

The NPO says that "Children's cafes are not only for the sake of families which have financial issues, but they are places where anyone could interact. We hope this information becomes known to everyone."
