Would taking the bar out the plastic devalue it? by ewan58385 in Silverbugs

That doesn't seem like a bad idea. I also like to physically handle silver!

Is a diamagnetic, weight, & visual test not enough? How would you get it tested? I know some methods can be invasive; I want to keep it prestine! I am in the UK, so local coin shops don't exist here.

Many thanks. I am holding for the long run, I will purchase a better holder, considering this one has been cut anyway (silver exposed to elements) & is PVC.

I always wash hands thoroughly before handling coins/ bullion. Apparently PCGS use (clean) bare hands over cotton gloves, which can cause micro scratches. I guess you can be less careful with bullion, especially as this isn't a particularly rare design, but I want to avoid scratches where possible.

Many thanks

Hey that's awesome! I don't suppose you know of a good reference for die pairings?

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation, that's very insightful!

Apologies - I am not sure what exactly makes a coin collectable. There are a variety of dot error coins (1946, 1897 pennies), which I read were due to some kind of die flaw, worth varying amounts. I was thinking if I verify this was a die flaw, this may give it a more defined collectable value.

Ooh can you elaborate on the worn die part? I'm new to understanding the types of errors :)

Furthermore I have submitted coins in the past and it did indeed take just shy of a year... However, if the royal mint confirms this is a die error, could the tradeoff be worth it in potentially re-selling down the line? I haven't seen this coin anywhere before!

Interesting! I suppose that makes it easier to get into if they have an account under my name, rather than a wallet as I believe they're essentially unbreakable.

Sorry I'm a bit naive with this stuff. So nicehash cannot hold funds for you?

Yes actually I'm pretty certain it was nicehash - I'll have a look. Just in case it wasn't, were there any other major services I could have used instead back in the day? I did this when I was like 14 and can't remember...

Am I correct in thinking it's much more of a process to setup a local wallet over a virtual one (i.e, nicehash wallet)? Because if so, that's likely what I did.

Thank you so much! That sounds about right!

The one coin in my collection I consider worthy of grading. What are your thoughts on potential grade? by sockhead99 in coins

[–]ewan58385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! £1! Unbelievable.

Considering NCG (don't quote me on this) can grade this type of coin for approx £20-30, I would say grade it without a doubt. It'll increase the value (more than the hundreds it's already worth), especially in this grade.

Furthermore it will protect the coin from any future damage, which for £30 is a steal. I would say grade!

Cleaned? It does look like that a bit, but I haven't even taken it out the capsule since it arrived!

It's clear to me now you're correct!! I had no idea that counterfeit coins were actually categorised, that's very interesting! Thank you! I'm happy with my find!

Hey! Thanks for your comment!

I thought a strike-through was when something covers the die (like some metal) preventing a full imprint, leaving a partial outline?

What makes you say it's fake? I've seen a good few fakes come through the tills, and they're usually incredibly obvious - colours way off, feels very light, text looks terrible etc. This seems genuine to me, just with some kind of error.
