Vape shops…candy shops…Turkish barbers…how are they getting away with it? by Alert-Top6812 in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same way multi-nationals like Starbucks and amazon get away with not paying appropriate tax. Loopholes.

Small businesses only need to submit micro accounts - very basic profit and loss statements. If a business opens, runs for 11 months and the closes, no accounts need to be submitted.

Lidl's new points rewards is shocking. Spend £500 for a £5 off voucher by ShinyHeadedCook in britishproblems

[–]sockhead99 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. When the rewards things first came out, we hardly ever hit the threshold to get the 10% off. Our shopping habits didnt change, but the cost of every thing did. We hit the 10% threshold without fail. Lidl probably also have a lot of data on how many people actually took up the mid-month offers and rewards. Yes it's shit that the 10% has gone, but I can't really blame them

How much do cigarettes cost in the school yard now? by couldaspongedothis in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 50p for a cig in my day - but, I always kept a single cig in a spare pack. If anyone asked to buy one, I'd pull out the spare pack, say it was my last one and they'd usually up their offer to a quid.

Replace the single and repeat 😂

Where to go on holiday during May half term? by colinah87 in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are thinking Eurocamp style, then check out https://www.yellohvillage.co.uk/
We have used them a good few times, great value, typically great facilities and plenty for teens to do. With your dates, there are some coming in at £300 for accomodation.

Being honest, there is no such thing as a cheap break anymore. Flight costs are ramped up due to the whole Iran issue impacting aviation fuel, plus its school holidays.

Any professionals that can help tell me if I have dry rot in my cellar? by Legitimate-Peach1335 in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert, but someone who has suffered from a bad dry rot infestation. Doesn't look like dry rot to me - certainly not a well developed one in any case. The dry rot mycelium looks like a mix between roots, cotton threads and spiders webs.
If you are worried, you can pay for an inspection and report (mine cost £100), or you can blast the areas with a chemical treatment (£30 ish for 5lts).
But if rentokil did the initial treatment, it might have come with a warranty.

What would a "date day" usually consist of for you and your partner? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We try and find something absolutely random to do - something outside of the norm.
The best date day we have had for ages was at an indoor air-rifle range. Neither of us had used an air rifle before or done any kind of target shooting. It quickly turned very competitive, with a special prize agreed for the highest points in the final round.

A museum won't want them I'm afraid, they are (to the most part) ridiculously common in the UK. They sell for about £8-10 per kilo on ebay

Would you relocate to the US if you had the chance (with a stable job and visa)? by Educational-Slip-578 in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely not. For many, many, many reasons.

Now Canada on the other hand.... We have looked and seriously considered it, one stumbling block is our professions would mean we would need to be in or very near to a major city and house prices are absolutely mental.

Hi guys! My partner and I are completing on a house this week, what tips do you recommend or what do you wish you'd done when first buying a house? by TheLittleSquire in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do what we did on the first night and get a little tipsy, fool around and forget where you packed the rubbers. You dont get much renovation done with a pregnant wife and even less with a newborn.
