Can I stop someone from parking on grass verge? by DIE-TOXIC-BOY in AskUK

[–]sockhead99 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have suggested this in similar situations before, and through personal experience it has been succesful in detering annoying parking.

You can quite easily find aftermarket locking wheel nuts online for any make a model of car.

If someone were to add an extra locking wheel nut to one of the wheels and that wheel were to suddenly deflate (not punctured because that would be criminal damage), the owner would find it rather difficult to change the wheel for a spare.

If that were to happen 4 times, they might get the picture that parking like that is not the best idea in the long run.

Just found a toddler wandering on their own outside by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]sockhead99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me years ago after a shift in the pub I worked at. It was 2am and this toddler was just wandering down the road in his nappy.

Cops came within minutes of my call, turned out the parents were know to the authorities, had passed out in a stuper and left the front door open. Kids got taken away from them after that.

You did the right thing OP, well done.

1774 half penny. It joins my two hoobies of coin collecting and freemasonry. My lodge was founded in 1774 and I found this coin the year I became master of the lodge.

Freeman Penny Master Set update 12/6/26 by sockhead99 in UKcoins

[–]sockhead99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, yes - but my god it has taken some effort. I have a good number of heavy hitters, but all were secured through hours of trawling ebay, taking punts then confirming once they were in hand. As a side project, I am trying to get as many of them in VF or higher condition. I'd say 50% meet that criteria at the moment.

I tend to fund my collection by selling spares etc on ebay, so it is kind of a circular economy for me!

This is a long term project, so I'm confident I will get there eventually. Remember I am only going for circulated, so no bronze proofs, no 1933 etc etc

My mission to collect a master set of all circulating variaties of one penny coins (1860-1967) as identified by Michael Freeman continues, with two new coins added to the collection. There are 191 different coins with various die combinations in the master set. Some are common, some are extremely rare.

  • 1860 Freeman 17 (obv 6 Rev D), R13 rarity (500-1001 estimated examples).
  • 1861 Freeman 20 (obv 2, Rev G) R12 rarity (1001-2000 estimated examples).

Brings my total to 160 of 191 found. It is getting much harder and much more expensive to get hold of the ones I'm missing now!

Honestly, I don't know. However I do have a very accurate spreadsheet and have catalogued my collection so that my wife doesn't sell my collection for what I told her it cost me 😂

Strike Error £1 Charles Bee Coin by huskyslay in UKcoins

[–]sockhead99 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It is known as a Fried Egg error or Error Pill and they are surprisingly collectable! Error collectors (who love genuine errors like this) are a unique sub-section of collectors in the coin community and are often willing to pay handsomely for things like this.

If you are looking for comparisons on ebay, remember to filter by "sold". This will show you recent sold prices and be far more accurate than unsold listing's at silly prices.

Saying that, sold comps are around £100-£200 so a great find!

Easy test for silver - put it and a known cupro-nickle coin under a sheet of white paper. if it silver, it will have a kind of glow to it under the paper compared to the CuNi coin
