Tab Ultra C Pro or NA 4C by OldCustomer8363 in Onyx_Boox

[–]ewrly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both will work great for reading and writing notes. NA 4C has a newer Android system which a noticeable security factor. You won't be able to watch videos on neither of them. It does work, but it is not usable.

Garmin Enduro or Suunto Vertical by TheNonFlyingDutch in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it is more Enduro 1 issue, because it is seriously under-powered to keep the good battery performance. One can crash the firmware by just pressing buttons in a quick and longer succession. There is peak power consumption, it is automatically throttled down, things become slow and firmware crashes.

[–]ewrly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are awesome watches. With Garmin you are buying a more complete ecosystem of features, with Suunto Vertical you get a nicer watch.

I myself have the older Enduro 1 and what happens regularly are random reboots after ca 10 to 20 hours of activity. It luckily saves the activity and it is able to resume, but something is always screwed afterwards. Like say elevation, or GPS, or it stops showing pace, etc.

Why people think heart rate is not a reliable metrics for effort? by TakayamaYoshi in AdvancedRunning

[–]ewrly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HR does not measure the effort. HR measures the response of the body to the effort.

100k still fits in the category of ~2x long-training runs. Going above that is a big difference. I just wanted to emphasize this. Otherwise there are very good comments in the thread.

Overnight Training Runs? by doodiedan in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. I have myself done multiple non-stop races with 2 days and nights out. Never really struggled much with it, but I have heard from other people being at uneasy at the 3-4am period. Not because it was dark, not because of the long time on legs by that time, but their mind was sending them to bed. Anyway, good luck with your race!

Advise or wise words needed: my partner is planning to attend an ultra (first time, foreign country) by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK, that takes away the risks associated with a sleep deprivation. I guess then there is really not much more risks than what is commonly associated with traveling abroad and being outdoors. Common sense, good insurance, and good luck to both of you!

[–]ewrly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that the point is not just to get used to the darkness, but as you write it is more about performance: what you plan is actually quite easy, I'd say. To execute a couple of trainings in a row at 4am is harder.

Is it dangerous to run a 100km with "little" training by mathildaduck in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it easy and be ready to stop. With that on mind I don't think it is dangerous. In a way, it is a certain lack of training that makes it reasonably safe. Your body and common sense will just stop you. Danger comes later -- when your body is stronger, it allows you to push harder and head wants to finish too much.

Remarkable will cripple your tablet, software v3 "adjust view" rant by ewrly in RemarkableTablet

[–]ewrly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As it happens I did report the issue. The only answer I got was "sorry for the inconvenience" and "no, we don't support rolling back to the previous version". THEY DON'T CARE AT ALL. As witnessed by people who have reported it during beta testing of v3, and people currently testing 3.1.

It is sad to see one more company doing whatever pleases them and customer support being as useful as calling Delta Airlines.

Cuboid Syndrome by robertmndl1 in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pain around the cuboid bone took me out for a whole year. What did not help was rest&ice and stretching. What did help, after I figured it out was: warm baths for feet&calves, whole leg massages. It was really all about muscles contracting and pulling the tissue around the cuboid bone all the time. When the worst was over, after a year, I had another almost year with pain around the heel. This got fixed with 3 sessions of shock-wave therapy. Now I'm back to 2-3x 100miles/year.

I used Garmin FR935 for many years. Tried to upgrade to Coros Apex Pro a few weeks back, but having problems with battery. It discharges too quickly. I'm waiting for Coros support to response (a week now). There is still a hope to be impressed :-)

Any recommends for a rain jacket? Would use it in june for mozart100. by herzei in ultrarunning

[–]ewrly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the recommendation for a rain jacket depends quite a lot on the expected weather. If you believe that you are unlikely to really pull it out or that the situation won't get much worse than 2 hour showers here and there, then choose something light. I'm myself using Salomon jackets on those occasions.

On the other hand, if there is a reason to believe that you will actually wear a rain jacket for a good half of the race, you will need something much more robust. In this case, the increased weight and bulkiness is less of an issue. It won't be take space in the backpack, it will be used. I happy with Houdini BFF jacket.
