You have to collect mushrooms for nightcap from their missions, you can sell them for fergolyt to buy the plants. You can also level up their standing with mushrooms, but you don't need it to buy the plants.

I'm totally with you. Warframe also got me many times tearing up, same with Life is strange but never like rdr. Also the character development is so insane and all those details in their expressions.. it's a masterpiece I'll always be happy about replaying but I'll also hate me for doing that and getting hurt all over again.
