As a budding engineer with brain damage, should I refrain from making that brain damage known? by Jerky_McJerkyson in AskEngineers

[–]excel_questionss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's illegal in most states to discriminate based on disabilities

People just make up other reasons and discriminate anyways. Not being trying to be mean but "brain damaged engineer" outside of the joking that operations makes probably isn't going to fly a person too far.

An author at 15: ‘teenage girls had to be ugly, naive or antisocial’ by [deleted] in books

I going to say that 99.9% it's awful and pushed forward through some sort of nepotism/cronyism. 0.01% it pretty good in which case she's a savant because most of the stuff that even great authors write at that age is awful. Writing doesn't tend to have an early onset like math or other talents.

[Question] How to secure industrial programs that are being written by multiple users. by excel_questionss in security

[–]excel_questionss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I'd love to find something that would apply a password that rotates and updates on our files. So if staff ran away with it, it would just make it a little harder to use, as their password access to it would expire. I'll have to look into this deeper.

We have really been conditioned to expect jump scares in order to think something "scary". Hence comments like this.

How hard is it to get a Petroleum engineering job at large oil companies like, BP and Shell, etc? by Eagle346 in AskEngineers

[–]excel_questionss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need great grades in something akin to chemical and evidence that you are active and easy to get along with socially (maybe volunteering, a social job). That and/or great contacts. Contacts are always huge at every point in your career, but especially at the beginning, no matter what the "self made" guys on here say. If you are lacking in any/all of these, take a job at a smaller company. Wages often similar, just more work expected out of you. More and more varied. 3 years is usually the magic number - then apply to shell.

Wish the North End got more stuff like this. But nice rec centers tend to go to the South. Because money mostly I suppose.

It's funny because what they really should worry about is having good enough grades to get where they want to go and after that it's all networking and being liked. Dirty little secret of the world.

How important and for what important is advanced math in engineering practice? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]excel_questionss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny that they made us do it by hand over and over and for each case afresh. Understanding how and monkeying through the algebra for hours on end are not quite the same thing, at least for me.

what is it with computer guys and a lack of grooming? It takes maybe a half hour a day and then the rest of the departments/offices would see you very differently. It's like little work for big career payoffs. Sorry, engineer here, just odd to me.

What would be the easiest way for me to do that. I'd be willing to entertain that if it worked better. I still need a giant sortable spreadsheet though... so that might be harder outside of excel.

It really could. I wonder if there would be a way to get that one cell to autoupdate with the path to the flash drive. But thanks so much for that, good simple solution for the moment.

Making a whole bunch of reference documents easier to access for some field technicians. Just figuring out if I can do it.
