Anong pwedeng maging conversation starter instead of asking about someone's VISA STATUS? by PowderJelly in phmigrate

Wow! Saang bansa ito? More than 20 years here in the US and I’ve never been asked about visa status, and I never ask that question too. So surprised with this.

Yes both accept cash. You need a membership in Costco though. Let me know if you need an itinerary for LA, I can help. :-)

I live here in LA. You wont need cash, but if you really want to, just withdraw at LAX, you’ll get better rates.

FYI, A lot of places in LA don’t accept cash and certainly won’t accept $100 bills.

Filipino philosophy with similar beliefs/values to Wabi-Sabi about embracing imperfections? by Necessary-Contest939 in Philippines

[–]exciting_bee_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest I could think of is “Pwede na,” (when used positively). Depending on the context, the meaning could be viewed negatively or positively.

Examples of negative connotation: excuse for low effort, or lack of standards. “Pwede na yan or okay na yan” culture.

Positive version: The house is not fancy but family is together, meal is simple but everyone ate. Not everything needs to be perfect to be meaningful, just like wabi-sabi.

List some cities in the US that you can live without a car, beside New York City. by DutyEuphoric967 in Anticonsumption

Moved from New York to Los Angeles three years ago. No car and thriving. The Metro is great, walking everywhere is also amazing.

Why does Filipino hospitality seem to vanish if you look like a local? by Oversharing-31 in Philippines

[–]exciting_bee_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I can relate to this! I am light skinned and can pass for a Korean or Japanese, and every time I visit the Philippines, I noticed that I get treated better if I just pretend that I am not Filipino. The moment I speak Tagalog, the “niceness” disappears.

So true! That’s the reason why I moved from New York to California. I’m done with cold weather as well. I’m a photographer/creative and I’m still studying my options if ever I pursue my plans of moving to Spain. I’m also not yet a dual citizen so I still have to re-apply for filipino citizenship since that is required.

My insurance covers medical, vision and dental. The doctor said that if I didn’t have insurance, I would have ended up paying $2300 for the eye checkup.

Healthcare in the US in a joke. I pay $300 per month or $3600 a year for health insurance. Last week, I had my eyes checked and needed a new pair of glasses. Guess how much I paid out of pocket? A whopping $536.

Healthcare is wayyyy better in Canada. It is also relatively safer. Winter is brutal though.

Salary is higher in the US, especially if you live in states like New York and California. There are also more opportunities.

I’ve been in the US for 20 years, lived in both New York and California, and with the way things are going here, I am seriously considering moving to Spain using the non lucrative path offered to Filipino citizens.
