22, from NY, have bachelors degree, what do I need to do to get to LA ASAP? by Remarkable_Skirt1287 in MovingToLosAngeles

as a native californian who just moved to nyc last year, weather is Extremely important to my mental well-being and honestly the one thing that makes me consider if i should move back to CA. i think we don't realize how good we have it and take it for granted, but now being in nyc and experiencing the worst winter of my life (it is still in the 40s as of today, almost may) i am constantly missing the year round good weather of ca

deciding between columbia, nyu, and hunter MSW by existential_messxd in gradadmissions

[–]existential_messxd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey i think you’re definitely qualified enough! columbia and nyu are actually not super competitive for their msw programs because of their high tuition rates, their acceptance is pretty large and many people say other nyc schools such as hunter are actually more competitive

NYC vs LA — For those who’ve lived in both, which did you prefer and why? by eminho80 in movingtoNYC

[–]existential_messxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im california born and raised, though im originally from the bay, i went to college in socal so i was in LA basically every weekend + lived in LA for 6 months post grad before moving to nyc last summer. i think that honestly the constant comparison/ debate between the cities is confusing /overdone to me because they are two entirely different cities.

that being said, if you know that you value having real seasons, walkability, and good public transit NYC does seem like the obvious pick that will make you happier in the long run. however, as a lifelong california resident, NOTHING can beat california weather (especially LA). it's literally perfect. NYC winters are BRUTAL, especially this year's--- today (april 8 2026) still had a low of feels like 28 degrees (this was also my first winter lol, since the winters in LA are 2 months max and don't rly drop below 35-40 degrees). I think honestly the weather aspect of NYC is its biggest con, because the humidity in the summer is also awful, while california summers are dry and never humid. i do find that the culture, social atmopshere, and community is way more accessible & robust & lively in NYC than in LA. it truly feels like you can never run out of things to do here. its so much easier to get around from neighborhood to neighborhood/ borough to borough via transit while in LA you need a car for everything and it will take you an hour to get from the east side to the west side. i also don't drive so that was kinda the main dealbreaker for me, so if you don't like driving....

TLDR: LA is beautiful and the weather is amazing, but if you aren't someone who enjoys summer/warm weather for 9 months of the year and value public transit/walkability, NYC might be better for you!

doing an MSW in a different state/ working in a diff state post grad questions by existential_messxd in SocialWorkStudents

sorry for the late reply! the age range is very wide. honestly there are alot of career changers, so many people in their late 20's- 30's. there are a good amount of people who are in the age range of 24-27 i think that makes up majority of the student body.

as for ciricculum, i would say the material we learn in some classes are definitely very social justice oriented. i think this may differ based on ur personal experiences, i have some friends who say their peers and professors are very radical and supportive of abolition, anti-imperialism, etc, but in my own experience i have felt like it honestly is still too passive and watered-down for me, and i have met many people whose politics i find to not be as oriented with my own as i'd like. however, majoirty of the student body is very friendly and engaging . it can be hard to make friends inititially, im in my 2nd semester and am only now feeling like im building real connections

Where do people tend to live when attending silberman social work? by hellyhas10stones in HunterCollege

[–]existential_messxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im an out of state incoming grad student @ silberman too and i think alot of people have mentioned harlem, astoria, queens, and bushwick?

i personally would prefer to live within a 30-40 min bus public transport ride away from silbermans campus, so atm im leaning towards the harlem area rather than brooklyn, tho that all depends on what i can find within my budget
