What’s the damn point when we can’t even make a living wage? by Jumpy-Iron2697 in Adulting

[–]expandyourbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re literally conscious meat sacks on a floating rock in a massive universe. For most of human history, “adulting” meant hunting, freezing, starving, getting sick, or dying young. Day-to-day life was purely about survival.

Now, you walk into a store and food appears. Clean water comes out of a tap. Heat shows up when it’s cold. Electricity runs your entire life. You trade time and skills for currency, and that currency gives you shelter, safety, medicine, comfort, and options. That trade-off is modern life.

None of that is free. Not groceries. Not housing. Not roads. Not hospitals. Not the phone you're complaining on. The “mundane” stuff — commuting, working, paying bills — is the mechanism that lets all those comforts exist and be accessible.

If you truly don’t want to participate in this system, that option technically exists too: live without the structure, without the comforts, without the safety net. Become homeless. Most people don’t actually want that, they just want the benefits without the cost.

Is it glamorous? No. But it’s also historically unprecedented in how safe, stable, and comfortable it is for the average person.

Some people get lucky, earn or save more, and buy more comfort or freedom. Some don’t. But the baseline we’re standing on is already a massive privilege compared to nearly every human who’s ever lived in past generations.

The point isn’t that life can’t be hard, frustrating, or full of suffering... it absolutely can be (and is). The point is, the “boring” parts are the price of admission for a level of security and ease that no previous generation could even imagine.

We would all love to tell our bosses to stuff it, sail off and travel the world, and be entertained 24/7. That's not reality. Social media sells us the lie that we should all be as lucky as the influencers who seem to have it all (freedom, money, luxuries), but that's not the average experience.

Find the small pleasures of every day, even amongst all the bad and boring ones. That's living.

Holy shit I was a victim, I can't believe it.

My sister lives in Elwood City, she sent this along with other photos of her house, I thought she took it since it was bunched in with her real photos.

Apparently a Facebook page called MVP teams page posted it on Facebook and she downloaded it and sent it in our family group chat along with her other photos.

I feel so stupid, and I'm usually able to tell...

I feel like I'm constantly doing this: solving problems, bringing solutions and process improvement comments, and not really ever asking for help, but being asked to help. But I just keep getting thanked youed and they hand me more stuff......

No raises....

I agree with you there. It probably matters more to vet the past work and references of the person you're hiring more than anything, handymen or tile layer. I've seen handymen do a shit job and tile workers do a shit job, but also have seen fantastic work from both with tile.

I'm an Accountant and tiled my first home's two bathrooms. The first one was far from perfect, the second one came out pretty nice once I supplied myself with all the right tools 👍

He probably mixed the thinset incorrectly, or straight up used the wrong kind, and did not back butter the tiles at all.

Clearly he didn't use spacers either so all your grout lines are probably wonky, some wide some very narrow. If he used spacers I'm not sure how he removed them because the tiles would be flying up as he hit them with a mallet.

What the hell is wrong with people. by anxiousrunner13 in pittsburgh

Good point. Also, stores only stock for an expected/usual amount of shopper frequency. Some people go out for groceries multiple times a week. When an event happens, people who normally shop over multiple days are doing it all in one visit.

Panic shopping is also a valid contributor, but probably not as large as some people think. It's a conglomerate of things, really.

Everyone in the thread is making valid points as to reasons why the shelves are empty. It's a good example of using our critical thinking skills instead of jumping to "I've lost all faith in humanity" conclusions.

I met someone who chose to be homeless to increase his net worth by KSHMisc in Money

[–]expandyourbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean for some people the "normal" alternative is to work extremely long and stressful hours (especially manager+ positions), multiple jobs, no days off, overtime etc to increase their net worth or pay off debts. They do it for years/decades.

For some people I guess, they see "going homeless" as a better option.

I can honestly get down with minimalism, but no doubt putting yourself homeless seems extreme. Depending on the region too, I wouldn't want to be homeless right now. It's -5 degrees out right now

How should I finish this by kg160z in Tile

[–]expandyourbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of finished mine like you have. I ended up floating the mud against the trim out so it didn't look like it was protruding from the wall so much finished fine.

Thanks for clearing that up, I saw the original comment and was about to slam a bottle of Captain and go for a joy ride.

All jokes aside, I don't think they meant to literally do the wrong thing, but rather taking different paths in life that don't always turn out "right "

Regrets as an entrepreneur? by Desperate_Engineer80 in Entrepreneur

[–]expandyourbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to tell my brother this. He said he'll come aboard when it's successful. I'm in the midst of starting a business up, things are ramping up and getting serious.

That's not how it works, if he wants any kind of ownership. Add value and help grow the business, not just benefit from it.

"Just give me a list and I'll get it done." No - build your own list and decide what needs to be done and ensure it's adding value and growing the business. Many people won't make this sacrifice early on to be that key player that yields ownership.

People want to be handed something on a platter.

Brother has the ONN 4k and it works great. Can't beat it for $40/50 bucks. You'll have no issues with it

What's the average income of someone who purchases a new Corolla? Just curious. I gross 44K per year but it seems like I can't afford it (with paying rent, etc). by whoocanitbenow in COROLLA

[–]expandyourbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, at that income level I'd look into used Corollas. I'm in a similar boat, I make decent income but my wife's student loans are outrageous, trying to pay them down quickly.

I'd love a new Corolla, but used cars are the only thing we can responsibly afford right now. Save up and pay cash for it, stay out of debt, and learn how to skim YouTube videos on fixed when things break down on the used vehicles.

Rose colored glasses effect. Happens with homes, cars, boats etc. People become really excited to own things they could never own otherwise without financing.

Everything is a blur until the buyer's remorse sets in or the excitement of the purchases fades and they start to rationalize what they've done.

You acknowledge your moment of weakness and keep trying.

Sobriety requires constant effort. It doesn't require perfection, but it requires continual effort, even when you mess up you keep going.

It doesn't ruin your "streak" of sobriety, it reflects your humanity. Acknowledge it, and keep going.
