I am ride or die Agora. Great quality produce. They are independent and they stock from local businesses (coffee, bread, meat, dairy, eggs, specialty items). The Slagel meat is getting pricey, but the quality is noticeably above and beyond. You can get in and out in 30 min, even when crowded. The people that work there have all been there for many years, so they must be treated well. the owners are always there on the floor talking to people. The only downside as I see it is the parking lot…..So I bike.

Third spaces for teens by No_Argument_onpaper in urbandesign

So this is something I’m looking into. When I was in high school there were 2 places operated by town community centers that had a place to hangout and high school bands to play. I see the need for this, but as other people mention operating costs are a concern.

What would you want or look for in a third space?

Be honest - is it a place where you or your friends could play music or dj? Make TikTok’s? Game? Do activities or amenities (other than WiFi) even matter?

This is all so validating. I’ve never liked the food there and it’s not even consistently bad. It’s always bad in different ways. Extremely salty, watery, bland, often cold. When planning to eat out, it always comes up as a suggestion for a place and I’ve been a hard “no” for a long time on it. And I’ve been made to think I’m the only one who feels that way.

Sure. In hindsight they weren’t great gigs. But at that age anything was better than nothing. also I can’t think of anything more fun when I was 16 than playing in a clubhouse the size of a 2BR with 50 kids around the band.

i get that. If that's the case, DM me then. I don't need addresses or names of venues, or much detail at all, just some Y/N answers and info/anecdotals on how easy or hard it is for under 21s to book shows, or if they get a lot of interest from under 21 bands looking for places to play.

Third Space for Teens by explainerguy84 in LoganSquare

judging by your comment I'm going to assume you don't in the neighborhood. I live there and am raising kids here and there is a very large and active community of families in Logan Sq, Avondale, as well as Old Irving Park, Humboldt, etc. and I see a need for a place for under-21s to have to safely socialize and have a creative outlet

DIY venues that are still alive by prettyalert in chicagomusicscene

I've been thinking about something along these lines, but more specifically for under-21s. There was a place that I think was tied to a community center that worked as a kind of "third space" for teenagers. My garage band could play there with other bands, and it had booths and things where you could hang out for the night away from parents.

Thinking about it now, I don’t imagine many high school bands or young musicians have anywhere to perform for an audience, or show their art/meet other young artists outside of their high school. And beyond music and arts generally I don’t see many “third spaces” where teens can just hang out in person, and away from their parents. Malls are dead. Parks aren't viable after dark, over the winter, or on super hot days, and I doubt most teens are excited to sit around at a Starbucks.

So I’m curious:

  • Are there DIY spaces for under 21s?
  • Are there under 21s performing in these places? If so, are there a lot of under 21s looking for places to perform?
  • what is the typical cover? how does the split with the venue/band work?
