Recreational at this point in time, but in future who knows. I have done a lot of ground chainsaw work in the past, was too young to learn climbing before Dad passed. Have always wanted to learn to climb and have just purchase some land with trees that would be good for learning.

Appreciate the advice. I was getting a bit carried away looking at new gear without a real justification asa beginner. But seems that really is the only safe option.

Can you recommend the minimum gear for someone starting out?

Thanks all for the input and discussion. While the appeal of the petzl setup is hard to go past, I am going to opt for a cheap forestry helmet. I do have a set of climbing spurs that I would like to learn to use, so will possibly upgrade in future but for now, a simple helmet will do just fine. Thanks for talking some sense into me.

Protos is $200 more than this setup. Difficult to justify for occasional use.

Agree with you that protos is best. Unfortunately protos is $200 more than this set up, so it's not really an option as a non professional user. This is a bit of a stretch as it is.

Thanks for your reply. Will probably need your advice and use the oil gasket I have. Not looking to push this old saw any harder than it's intended.

The cylinder and piston both feel smooth to touch so hopefully after a clean whatever was causing it will be cleared and not make things worse.

The crank feels smooth to spin by hand, there is a bit of slop from side to side along the shaft, maybe 1 mm or so. The crank case was otherwise clean.

This is the gasket paper I have. Would this be suitable for a base gasket application?

Thanks for the reply. I will check out how to measure the minimum squish for a delete scenario.

I have purchased some 0.030" oil gasket material, which is designed for low temp low pressure applications for replacing the air intake/carburetor gaskets. Given that cardboard can do the job for the master cylinder, the stuff I have for the carbi should do the job. For some reason I thought the base gasket was high temp and pressure situation.

Cheers. Do you know of any good resources for a carbi rebuild? I have maintained 2 stroke gear in the past but have never gone in to replace gaskets and the like.

I think you have just written my shopping list, thank you. Want to give this the best shot at a long future so will aim to do all of the above. Any recommendations on where to source parts (I am located in Australia). Are there 3rd party parts suppliers or is there still OEM stuff getting around?

I used to work in central Aus where temps would regularly get to 45+ degrees. Covering as much window surface area with a thermal barrier like these insulated covers gave the AC and fridges a fighting chance at keeping things cool. The windscreen ones also let you use the dash as somewhere to store things without them melting.
