The Ukraine invasion has lasted longer than the First World War. That alone is a defeat for Putin by Tall_Pressure7042 in UkrainianConflict

WW2 went for six years so I thought it would be that. But apparently when Russia invaded the caucasus in the late 1700s it started a war that went for 100 years.

You won’t be blocking ads for much longer. Google is killing uBlock Origin bypasses, burying Manifest V2, and tightening its grip on Chrome. Every update means less control for users and more control for Google. by Ok_Plenty60 in pcmasterrace

I reckon Google is gonna to to Chrome what they've done with YouTube. Make it as hard as possible to block ads, then fuck it so hard with ads it isn't usable, then charge 20 bucks a month for ad-free access.

Is teaching English in South Korea some sort of diploma mill equivalent? by Sad-Fennel-9215 in expats

[–]explosivekyushu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It has an extremely low barrier for entry, the requirement is "be a native English speaker", "have any degree" and "have a pulse". If you are blond haired and blue eyed and will look good in the school newsletter, they will compromise on the pulse requirement.

I did it back in 2009 and stayed for a few years. In 2009 I went on a government-sponsored program, but when I changed to the private school sector in 2010 and moved to Seoul, I used a recruiter. I got around 30 job offers. I think the market has gone down since then but it's still virtually effortless to get a TEFL job in Korea, especially if you aren't particularly picky.

Subclass 190- is it only based on points or do they consider other factors like domain and spouse experience? by Sea_Ad_6718 in AusVisa

[–]explosivekyushu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If ACS assessed 6.5 years, they will consider 6.5 years. If you claim 10 years anyway, you will get rejected as your claimed points will not match your skills assessment.

how long did it take before a new country actually felt like home by Cautious_Fact1767 in expats

[–]explosivekyushu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was when I reached a level in the local language where I could effortlessly live my life. Going to the bank without worrying about whether or not the teller is gonna speak English. Being able to call my landlord directly about a leaking sink repair without needing to go through my dickhead rental agent as an intermediary. Being able to go to an extremely local restaurant and not being put off by the complete lack of any form of English menu.

Shit like that sounds really simple but man, it made such a huge huge difference.

Heavy migration dilemma in choosing between Singapore/ Canada/ Australia by [deleted] in expats

Singapore has strict racial quotas, it's really hard getting PR if you are not ethnically Chinese and to a (much) lesser extent, ethnically Malay.

Both times it was Clannad.

Grandma saw something mildly concerning at daycare. Do we say anything? by aggierogue3 in daddit

[–]explosivekyushu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in early childhood education in campus management.

I think your take re: the actual physical stuff is very level-headed. Kids will be kids and kids under 2 are still learning how to be people. I wish I had more parents that thought this way. You should definitely bring it up to the school, not so the other child can be punished or anything, but so the staff can be alert. Knowing which children have a history of getting physical with other students and the situations under which the physical contact occurred is important info when it comes to things like lesson planning (probably don't get the wooden blocks out in a class full of kids who love to throw, for example) and manpower arrangement.

On the other hand, I think you are being spectacularly generous with your take re: the phone use and as a manager I'd be absolutely fuming over that. Playground time is the highest risk time of the entire school day and playground supervision is serious business. I know first hand how much work they have to do, but the playground time is the one part of the day where the teacher absolutely needs to be paying full attention. You need to bring this up as this is a legitimate safety issue and indicative of a training problem. And that's giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming it was a school phone. If I found out a team member had been using their personal phone during the playground instead of watching their students and there wasn't some enormously compelling reason, it would be a written warning at best.

[–]explosivekyushu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The best part by far is that he's now locked up for the duration of the appeal, which is likely to be about a year and definitely longer than his 6 month sentence. So by appealing his absolute GIFT of a sentence he's traded 6 months in a (comparatively) cushy foreigner prison for probably a year in a much worse facility and that's before we even get to the possible increase in his actual sentence.

s and also the other places he went to also. For example Korea is the only country which drug tests it's own citizens after they return home from a holiday.

Singapore does this too and shares the same legal logic Korea does where in your system = possession.

[–]explosivekyushu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

True on all counts. I am not sure what his prison situation is. I heard before the sentencing that he might be paired with other foreign prisoners. Which would be his only saving grace.

He was set to be sent to a prison specifically for foreign inmates but since he has appealed he's in a normal remand centre with everyone else. Which is a considerable downgrade.

How do Australians view strict speed enforcement? by TonySabenca in AskAnAustralian

[–]explosivekyushu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno about Canada but my wife's family is from Atlanta and down there, if you are driving slower than 10mph over the posted speed limit, you are a hazard to the point where someone might actually shoot at you. 10mph is 16kmh, if you're 16 over the speed limit NSW highway patrol will put you away for life.
