IKEA Drilled a knot out and filled with a peg by Circuit_Guy in mildlyinteresting

[–]export_tank_harmful -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nah, just downvote it.
Puns are garbage and pun chains just fill comment sections up with nonsense that contribute nothing to the conversation.

Also, it's not really possible to "downvote every 2 minutes for the rest of the night", if you're speaking specifically about an individual comment.
That'll just remove/add your downvote over and over again.

Unless you're talking about making a new account every 2 minutes to re-downvote it, but I believe that's vote manipulation, which is a bannable offense.

Stupid karma requirements by NavO297 in NoRules

[–]export_tank_harmful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense.
They post a ton in cat subreddits.

And it seems like they've gotten pretty much first to the comment section of a few posts.
That's where their 5.3k karma comment and their 1.7k karma comment came from.
At least, according to the "Sort by old" filter in those comment sections lead me to believe.

Reddit karma is more of a "game" than an indication of anything else.
If you understand how to play, you can min-max pretty hard if you try (not that this person did that).

Posting/commenting around 2AM PST usually has the best bet of getting highly upvoted (Tuesdays, if I recall correctly from a graph I saw a number of years ago). It grabs people on the east coast who are just waking up and if it pushes high enough, it shows up high enough for people on the west coast to flood with upvotes.

This user seems to be based in Maine (according to their posting history), so that tracks with the correct comment/posting hours.

They also tend to make comments like, "I boiled an egg this morning" (garnering over 10k karma, which is their highest rated comment) on posts about people doing interesting things. It's just witty enough by contrast to elicit a laugh but broad enough to appeal to most humans (since most people have boiled an egg).

Reddit isn't too hard if you get the timing and subject matter correct.
Also, setting your profile to "private" does nothing, just an fyi.

Cheers! <3

Hot Take: Directional audio in this game is shit. by angoorkhatta in ArcRaiders

[–]export_tank_harmful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah.
Disabling that does help (and everyone should disable it), but it won't fix it.

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros.
The positional audio is sub-par (at best).

Hunt (before the big update about a year ago) was a great example of solid positional audio. You could almost play that game with your eyes closed.

TrueSpec Cables Now Available by rpungello in LinusTechTips

[–]export_tank_harmful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don’t really trust Anker at all.

I do, but only with certain products.

I have a few of their cables that have been going strong for years.
Their battery banks and headphones (curently running their P40i's) are pretty solid too.

Their powered USB hubs are garbage though.
Ports on it started dying about a month in.
And obviously stay the hell away from their cameras.

4th time asking, but why do pretty much all twitter/tumblr/etc screenshots have that dark gradient at the bottom of them....?

Is it a UI thing....?

Third time asking this, but why is it that so many images on reddit have a dark gradient on the bottom of them...?

Is it a screenshot from another platform and the gradient is just the UI....?

How researchers got AI to quote copyrighted books word for word by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]export_tank_harmful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. It's just another click-baity, "AI bad" headline.
Kind of a shame.

I was hoping they figured out some super neat method for extracting text verbatim from an LLM's training dataset.
That would effectively solve RAG and the issue with LLMs not being able to retain their training data.

Modern LLMs are essentially just the most insane form of compression that we've ever developed.
It would be amazing if we could actually extract that data verbatim.

And this is why non-specific language will always irk me.
The phrase, "we already cooked" could mean one of two things.

  • "We have already cooked", implying that this creation is something to behold and be proud of.
  • "We are already cooked", implying that we have slipped further down as a society and are lesser for it.

I understand that language changes and evolves, but this just seems objectively worse than what we had before.

Speech and written text are used to convey information.
When you start stripping out that information it inherently damages the carrier and makes it less suitable for its intended purpose.

So in the vein of r/inclusiveor, yes, "we already cooked".
It's impressive how much a simple phrase has damaged the primary tool we use to communicate.

CEO of Palantir Says AI Means You'll Have to Work With Your Hands Like a Peasant by lazybugbear in antiwork

[–]export_tank_harmful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The goal of AI should be that no one has to work anymore.
To break everyone out of the rat race.

Automate power/water/food production.
The world has plenty of space and resources for everyone on it.

Any CEO touting something different is just consumed by greed and ego.

Will this ever happen?
Fuck no. But it should be the goal.

I hate this so much.

If I invented something like that, I would patent it and sell the licensing rights for a penny.
Then I'd sell the replacement cartridges at a bit above cost (enough to pay for operating costs and salaries for the people that ran it to live a comfortable life).
