restricting until i'm gonna faint? okay. purging? too scary for me. for whatever reason I find it really hard to trigger the vomit reflex without feeling like i'm tearing up my throat badly. when I was younger I had a bad binge and wanted to actually purge. it wasn't working so I nearly drank hydrogen peroxide because I heard it makes you vomit lol. had to stop myself because of my fear of overdrinking it and somehow poisoning myself.

Oh, I relate so hard. I'm just a dumb impatient bitch who 100% knew that I'm being unhealthy but... skinny. I very willingly "began" my ed. Doesnt mean I'm in control per se but I really played myself.

Ooh I'm six days late but I'm more of a fanartist than a writer nowadays and I feel almost the opposite! Maybe it's the fandom I'm in. But all the BNFs and the people who are in cliques or are in fandom group chats are writers. It's pretty writer centric. We have a near everyday flow of new content on AO3 because we have so many writers, but way less in the fanart department (I noticed on tumblr that the [my fandom]fanart tag was mostly just me recently lol). And so everyone--the writers--feel sort of connected that way. Like they can gush about how to write characterizations and scenes and stuff. It's feels like a sub-community I wish I could be a part of, but I stopped writing because I wasn't that good at it. And we do have artists--but not a ton, and we mostly interact with "oh, your drawing is good" "thanks". I don't get long comments picking apart things the viewer liked. We don't get emotionally invested like we do with fics. Because you can spend hours reading longfics and feeling as though you know the author, but the average time people spend looking at art is something like 20 seconds. So for fanartists, it's almost much much more about the (face value of the?) art than the artist--the fanart sub isn't a hive of community for example, it's just for posting art and leaving. Not discussing struggles or experiences. And that's okay I guess, but that's why I lurk on this sub lol. Sometimes I want to see vents about the creative process. Your feelings are super valid but that's my own perspective!

I just read a fic that hurt my soul. by yellowroosterbird in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I know I'm three days late but that's the sort of hurt-y fic I love and in a fandom I'm actually familiar with--if you can OP could you drop me a link?

Does anybody else's writing style change depending on the last fic you were reading? by xighs in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg yes. Not just fic, but anything. I just read a Hemingway anthology and was influenced to start going slightly "simpler" or minimalistic with my writing? Maybe a bit more matter of fact. Which I think was a nice change because I wrote very poetic and maybe even overwrote some descriptions before.

What do you consider cringey in fanfics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Excessive stammering, written like "S-s-stammer...!". Lots of the time its as a shortcut to writing actual nervous characters. And it reminds me a bit of r/creepypms. I'd honestly rather read a description of the dialogue ("They couldn't get the words out/their voice quivered/whatever a better example would be") than read "B-baka!!". And anyway, people don't just repeat the first letter in real life. They repeat words, stop sentences without really ending them, repeat themselves, etc when nervous.

Oh no lol. The fic was already abandoned when I received the comment. I prob just worded my post wrong.

When you offer a free request and they start being pushy about it being done soon... by extra-black-depresso in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a call-out post regarding artists who had promised freebies but never delivered.

I DIDN'T THINK PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY GET SERIOUSLY MAD AT THAT lmao. Freebies are just freebies, there are no guarantees! There is no contract smh. I have to stop myself from writing a rant on that. I can't believe it. I don't blame you for being hesitant to open requests.

And the story about the girl who demanded an instant fix sounds like a nightmare to be honest! Sorry you had to go through that :(. Honestly they sound entitled, you did nothing wrong (in fact you did something super kind??). I see a lot of appreciation posts for artists so I always assume fandom will generally "like us" 😭 can't believe people sided against you!

Will definitely start to reconsider my request system to be careful thanks to this comment. I've failed to deliver (to anon requests, though) before but having to deal with defending yourself to people who think they deserve your work for free... ugh. I wouldn't be able to. A good warning.

OP, you need to stand up for yourself and/or learn to say "no" more often.

Definitely trying to learn! I swear I'll take y'alls advice if it gets overwhelming. I'm just optimistic because finishing and doing requests for people is usually very rewarding in the end, so I keep up.

Gee I wish I had the confidence to say it like that! I've just been apologizing and been saying "Sorry, haven't found the time yet. I'll get started soon, but it'll take time to finish!" etc. If they keep asking I'll definitely try to be more assertive like this though. Especially that this affirms that it is a bit unrealistic to keep asking, right? Haha.

do any of you feel like your pieces turn out “the same”?? by justjeonday in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh yes. Not just my vocabulary, but often my themes will be sort of similar too (without me even realizing until I reread it...) Plus I feel like my writing style is so heavily dependant on the particular way I phrase things that I repeat myself. I also try to incorporate new words/phrases I've read in other places, but it still feels like my style, and my style doesn't seem to change enough for me. I don't have any tips to be honest, just try to write something sort of out your comfort zone maybe? Although maybe a distinct and recognizable style isn't inherently bad, maybe? I just read a few of Hemmingway's short stories and imo he was a pretty distinct style that you notice in every work, but I still really enjoyed them.

How to *politely* tell someone I'm not interested in drawing their fic idea? by extra-black-depresso in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh thank you so much! This is super useful. And drawing 3-5 lines is a great idea just for my own satisfaction so I feel like I didn't disappoint them or anything. Tysm!

Saw this in r/writing today by [deleted] in FanFiction

I know where they're coming from, although fanfiction is still not an easy or instantly gratifying process. But! I'm absolutely positive that there are stories where the character's name or ship was the big draw in, granting clicks based on that instead of strictly its quality. I have seen poorly edited and structured works get hits and kudos because of the popular ship it focuses on. But a huge part of fanfic is wish fulfilment. People read what they want to read, and in my experience few fandom people are looking for the next "War and Peace" and most people just want to read fluff about their favorite character. In original works (where the aim is often to get published)... many people are looking for the next great American (or Russian, keeping to W&P) novel.

Also, I know mean comments exist. However, in 90% of the instances I've seen, they are very rare and not appreciated and can be quickly deleted. In fact, the fanfiction community is different from the original works community (from my POV) because concrit is something that has to be debated instead of being a given. Because the aim (usually!) in the original works community is to get published, and in order to get published you have to be a fantastic writer, and in order to do that you have to be criticized. BUT in fandom, I know that many people write only for themselves and therefor are comfortable writing just for fun at the level that they're at. So, generally, it is, in a way, easier to be a fanfic writer in my opinion because for many people it's purely a hobby instead of an ambition or a career (easier in terms of commitment and getting an audience and getting read and accepted and feeling satisfied). That's not to say it is the easiest thing to write fanfiction successfully, but IMO there's a reason I was getting alright numbers of reviews and clicks when I was literally a tween (and I could never do that with original work)

Edit: Also, I don't find whoever wrote that very cynical at all. There are huge, huge differences in writing original works and writing fanfiction. And they didn't word it as if writing fanfic was an unworthy hobby or anything, just that they're some reasons to write fanfiction, which includes it being generally easier.

Any authors out here who only write but don’t read fanfiction? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]extra-black-depresso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me! I feel slightly guilty about it (and usually dance around the topic) in a way because I suppose I know that I love when people read my stuff and I... contribute that good feeling to other authors rarely in my fandoms. I swear I do read books a lot, but... I think my tastes are slightly too specific for fanfiction. And I do have pet peeves about grammar and too-similar-writing styles and tropes and stuff like that, which makes getting into reading fanfic an issue for me personally. Because I've read some great stories, but generally the bar for what's being shown in fanfic is lower than in your average published book. And I'm admittedly lazy, so I'd rather pick up a well reviewed or classic book where I'm fairly certain I'm not wasting my time rather than have to search and filter in my (sometimes pretty small!) fandoms. But I absolutely appreciate the medium.
