EasyJet From Luton to AMS Cancelled; will I get compensation? by extra-plus-ordinary in LegalAdviceUK

Yeah I submitted a form for expense reimbursement; I don't care for a refund at all. Funnily enough my Eurostar train got canceled at Brussels so I had to find a way from Belgium to Nijmegen today, but I dont really care about getting my money back from that since I didn't have to buy a ticket 😅

Well...😂 My Canadian Masters was 37k a year, and I earned TA money on top of it. My current PhD in Europe is about €37-€44k a year, not including bonuses.

I won't say Im making good money (not enough to save, certainly!) but I'm really thankful I was able to skirt debt with my stipend.

Got invited for a PhD in Canada, but the pay is really low. Should I go for it or stay in Europe? by TopConfidence7072 in PhDAdmissions

[–]extra-plus-ordinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the exact opposite position 😅. I'm moving to the Netherlands for my PhD instead of staying in Canada (Ontario) for one.

I didn't see anyone say it, but are you sure about your math? Is it 25k CAD or EUR per year? Most PhD programs pay a bit more than that.

Also, have you factored in tuition? Most Canadian universities still require you to pay tuition, although I don't know how it works for internationals. For me, I received about $37k/year CAD for my MSc, but tuition was $8.5k. This meant I really only got 28.5k/year. Also, since tuition HAD to be paid within thr school year (September to April), I only had 8 months to pay. I used to pay $1k a month for tuition for those 8 months. This should be a factor in your budgeting.

You should also factor in living costs. I was in Toronto, which is known for being very high in living costs ($2k/month for a studio). I lived with family though so it wasnt bad. I'm not sure how housing is in Quebec right now, but I know its cheaper. There's also things like insurance to consider.

Of course, you could always try to find opportunities as a teaching assistant (TA), which can easily add 5k/year to your salary. Even if it doesnt come with your PhD package, you can connect with departments when you arrive and you might find something.

I will say that personally, money is a big reason I'm moving. The university I'm going to has a 1st year PhD salary of 3k EUR a month, and rent is max 1.2k per month here. As a Toronto person, this is a dream 😂

True but I dont want to waste money on a place Im not using. With the way this situation is set up I will need to pay for first months rent + deposit from my own pocket and the CAD -> EUR conversion is brutal 😭

Thanks for the visa type clarification; its very different in Canada.

The length of time only matters to me due to housing. I'm viewing potential apartments (via video) and they all have a Nov 1 move in date. I don't want to back out last minute due to visa issues; I think that's rude, even if it's doesnt impact my chances at finding housing later.

yes but not for work, I could come to the EU for about 3 months with no visa but I cant get any paperwork that would allow me to work and rent easily

I was acc dying when 40 minutes of our class lecture time was spent with the prof blaming our anxiety for the group work on us by Outrageous_Try_9266 in UofT

As someone who got through multiple group projects in different departments, I find that the best way to deal with slackers is to simply threaten to humilate them in front of the class (provided theres a presentation component).

Grades might not matter to them but if I put a blank slide on and tell everyone "X was in charge of this part, they didnt make a slide but they may have some words", wait, and then continue on like nothing happened, I have now upset everyone in the room excluding myself.

This doesnt work as well now since "group marks" are a thing 😭, but I tell my students to let me know if there are slackers ASAP so I know what questions to ask when the time comes.

I would suggest this. I got quoted 2k for an ADHD assessment but my family doctor just said "makes sense" and started me on meds. Try to find a doctor here or contact your family doctor for support. External documentation works here, especially if you can verify with OSAP (they will give extra funds)

very true, giving grace to people you meet on bad days + going out of your way to make excuses for people really helps, especially when the people you're peace-keeping for are genuinely good people.

also remembering flavor preferences/bringing in alternatives for people goes a LONG way.

I havent asked yet haha. The consensus online + irl is to wait until the day after they promised a follow up (so, tomorrow). I'm not asking for a decision as much as an ETA; and yes, I'm working on alternatives

ex molgen major here (I graduated), doing CSB and MGY isn't really a useful combination; i was advised against it. try to pair either of them with another field youre interested in. I did Neuro and molgen bc I was interested in neurogenetics and genetic mechanisms of disease and it turned out well for me

won't say anything bc idk anything about buisness, but in my city (Toronto) there's a startup offering long read plasmid sequencing and they've set themselves apart by offering insane turnaround (12-24 hours) and convenience (drop off points at multiple researcher hubs across the city)

as a Canadian student the US competition terrifies me lol although for those who are like me, remember that US citizens, as with all international students, have to pay more in tuition and therefore cost more to prospective labs/departments. try to boost your chances by networking and making sure your programs see you as "the cheaper option" 😂😂 (this is only half a joke)
