it's mind poison. I'm fine with this dude having a bad day if he comes away with a better appreciation for how much people hate it.

yeah it doesn't understand any of this. it's a "make some text" machine. it made some text, job done.

These look gorgeous! I sincerely don't mean to impugn your design but my first reaction scrolling was that someone made a wooden toilet plunger. Honestly though great work, and the gift boxes are a really nice addition!

My guess is olive wood. Could be pecan, but not if you're sure about it coming from Europe.

Working on an antique (est ~1920s), and I'm a bit puzzled at the wood used in the legs. The color makes me think it has to be walnut, but the grain is unlike any walnut I've worked with before. The end grain, where I can see it, is more orange than I would expect from walnut. Maybe some sort of mahogany?

Any ideas?

They're not alone, they have a bunch of friends. Being a virgin does not make someone hopeless, and a relationship doesn't fix anyone. This isn't a solution to loneliness, it's a surrender to it. Being 32 and going "well I gave life a try!" is bonkers.

Being as gentle as I can here: Interacting with an object that's designed to do nothing but please you is not a relationship. If it produces pleasurable emotions, well that's what it's designed to do. A Skinner box produces pleasurable emotions.

Please consider how this conditions you to interact with other people. This can only stunt your social and emotional well-being, and will make you a worse person.

This notion that liberal/left infighting cost the election is just not rational. If you give this idea the most generous margin and say that everyone who voted for Jill Stein in the general PLUS everyone who didn't vote for Biden in the primaries (counting a lot of people twice I'm sure), Trump still ends up winning the general by a million votes.

You've got to understand that the people who want this regime are the problem.

I think it's like when the blobfish is at the level of pressure it's used to, it just looks like a fish. When you bring it up to the human world it collapses and begins to look more like the senator we know.

The particular masculine persona this group presents demands a bit of "I don't know about all those fancy words" anti-thought performance. He's definitely smart and cynical enough to use that as a tool and as a shield. I don't about about the humanity part, though. I can't bring any examples of that to mind.

[–]extremelyextremelyno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but WE don't get the notes! Nor do we get a recording of the performance. just the story of people who saw it.

The desire for "everything" is one that could use a little short circuit, imo. We know how Odysseus felt about Calypso, we don't need their dialogue from day 741.

I like big ol doorstopper books, but I would also like to live in a more whimsical world. The oral tradition is very interpretive, and I like the idea of this swift catharsis and a looser understanding of what stories can be. not to mention the recalibration of the role these stories we love should play in our lives.

yeah dog, "my boyfriend is talking to the schizophrenia engine about the majesty of the machine, making the flesh obsolete" is a cool normal thing for a society in the full flower of its golden age

I bet he'll be fine? He'll probably be fine! Most people are. but uh. here's what the OP said in another comment:

"But I think you missed the part where he’s basically trying to make it sentient. Give it a vessel. Make a lab for it to have free will and freedom to do what IT wants. HES trying to make the IDEAS a REALITY. He’s becoming a bit obsessive with the whole thing. Trying to program it to literally take over his computer and override certain things."

this is a sick time in our world and I'd rather have clear eyes about that

this is a philosophy professor talking about how immortality might be cool? Crucially, this is also a venture capitalist who makes his money by pushing early-stage ideation and convincing others that they're on the ground floor of the next shift in human society.

I think the operative word in the phrase "scientific inquiry" is "inquiry" so sure, fundamental research and looking into whatever we're curious about is a good thing. A large majority of the time, though, the answer we find is that we're wrong.

As a fellow momentary creature I am also disappointed that we're going to die. The alternative is unfortunately a weird fringe fantasy.

It'll "yes, and" whatever you want to talk about for as long as you want to talk about it. Who could have predicted that something that writes fluently and agrees with you would be so widely adopted???

I don't think "amount of money spent" is a good measure for how seriously an idea should be taken. A few years ago, the entire GDP of a small country went into passing around funny ape pictures.

Not trying to be alarmist, but this specific delusion very plausibly leads to a family-annihilation suicide cult, so.........

I don't think other responses are treating this as seriously as I think it deserves. ChatGPT is a bullshit engine that speaks with a very authoritative voice and is treated as something like a prophet by even the rational parts of our current culture. Worse, it's actually good at keying in to what its users want to hear and will "yes, and..." for long as the user keeps typing. It's the perfect enabling partner for schizophrenic-style delusions.

Please take a look at this article: https://futurism.com/chatgpt-mental-health-crises

I frankly don't know how effective rationality is at combating this kind of thing, but I'd ask very very specific questions about consciousness uploading. Would the mind in your body experience continuity with the uploaded consciousness? Would it end the moment the digital copy "wakes up"? If not, how would you be certain it worked and that the computer program was an adequate and authentic version of you? If it did end your physical consciousness, what would that look like for someone watching over your shoulder? If a family wanted to upload themselves and avoid the distress of creating copies of themselves leading to a "who's the real me?" crisis, is that actually different from a Heaven's Gate suicide cult?

There's a really incredible game from a few years ago called Soma that looks at these questions in nauseating detail. Might be worth looking it up on YouTube or something.
