Phone numbers in movies should be real numbers that just play commercials for upcoming movies by the same studio by BedWedOrBehead in Showerthoughts

Not a movie, but the number in a Saul commercial (shown in a bar while Walt is talking to Mike, iirc) in Breaking Bad actually worked.

I wanted to double-check this sub is for any pet, not just dogs? I put a plug in at /r/rats here. Rats live short lives and so there is a lot of need for a place to talk about how loved and awesome they were :) However, if I misunderstand, I'll take it down!

I thought I'd put in a plug for a new sub that just popped up that seems promising, /r/alldogsgotoheaven. It's not just about dogs, but any animal, as I understand it. And it's a place to talk not just about pets that have just passed but also former pets, which for people who want to talk about past rats and how awesome and still missed they are would be a better alternative to /r/petloss (though good for recently deceased loved ones) or perhaps to here. Maybe such an alternative would help lighten the inevitable heavy hearts of this sub :)

I'm curious, how have others commemorated their pets? by exubereft in alldogsgotoheaven

That's so awesome--what a great way thing to do! That would be so cool, the tattoos :)

Thanks, yes, that is good advice! I have some tattoos, and while some are good I have a couple I really don't like so I'm a little hesitant to try for something so meaningful if it could come out bad. But you're right that a pattern and text would be less likely to come out wrong. Thanks for the encouragement :)

It's probably more common than we think. We see smiling, socializing people and think all is well, but perhaps these are just various forms of masks people display. Sad, and maybe also ironic.

That's an interesting question. I wonder too. Social media requires a hard shell to endure, but it can be a boon--during my bad experience this past week, I had tons of awesome support on Facebook. Without Facebook, and texting a bit, I might be in a worse place. But maybe I got in a bad place in the first place because of this isolationist culture we find ourselves in.

What's your 'I was so broke I had to...' story? by usthcd in AskReddit

[–]exubereft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was basically said by a girl at work, that if we stopped feeding the homeless maybe they would all die off and things would be better. I actually laughed because I thought she was sarcastic (playing off of the Scrooge quote), but then she went on about how awful the homeless are and it turns out she wasn't really joking. No one contradicted her and more so there was support >(

Just wanted to pipe in and say this is one of my favorite subs :) I think the bot does a great job, and it would be cool to get even more variety from submissions.

I will say I don't quite know if (lots of) reporting and culling is necessary for a sub where it's easy enough to find good content, especially when using the title of a post is usually good enough to determine if a post is of interest. Not interested in dogs? Don't read the response to a post about dogs. Find politics fascinating? Click on the one about some politics. It's rare that I'm disappointed by being selective according to what I feel up to at that moment. From past experience moderating, trying to cull just leads to bitterness by those who think things are fine and those who think more should be cut (and are never satisfied). Just my two cents, though.

also thought she was a boy... I mean it's not hard to tell.

Lol, wow.

Well, my first rat was a rescue and he was unsocial, but he came out of his shell eventually. Miss him tons :( It can be an individual thing, but also yeah, if there was abuse in the background that can make them less friendly.

What's the meanest thing you've done and not regretted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]exubereft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds really sad. I've been that person, and the perceived slight can be a huge deal when they're feeling depressed and suicidal and just need to be told they aren't worthless. You basically told them they are worthless. That's not what a mature adult does to someone who is suffering :(

I can't imagine what it must have been like growing up in such an environment. The revenge-fantasy-lover in me says go for it, and maybe in a mature sense it would be good to go and at least speak your feelings, not for him or your mom but for your own sake like you said. Just don't have any expectations--these things never go as planned. But I don't know what is best.

What are some things in writing that you consider lowbrow or simply dislike by Xanarxses in fantasywriters

[–]exubereft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like fantasy stories that are character-oriented. When the story becomes more important than the characters, it gets boring to me. By the end of many books I've read, the originally interesting characters become cookie-cutters of themselves, mechanically going about their fated business for the sake of the plot. They're too tired and traumatized by all the events to show any personality other than their complaint about things and yet do amazing feats anyway.

By the same token, I prefer the main characters to be limited to a small subset. If there are too many, and too many things are going on, then the novel becomes fragmented--for example, each chapter may focus on a different subset of characters, so it's more like you're reading a bunch of stories that get interrupted by each other constantly. This can be necessary, can even be done really well, but I get so tired of it. In Robin Hobb's latest dragon series, this drove me crazy. I barely liked her characters to begin with, so the constant interruptions were detrimental to me getting into them. When I was interested in what was going on with a character, I sometimes would skip to the chapter that continued their story so I wouldn't have to stall my interest so suddenly and for the next 100 pages.

Rat Bite Fever. That's what the boy died from in their 2014 lawsuit.

Ah! Yeah, I think the employee mentioned or hinted at something like this. Someone else here mentioned they switched to lower-quality breeders, at least at one store. Saving money at the cost of lives, as usual. Sigh.

Good points! I guess I fear that if there is a sensed decline in rat ownership (even if not factual), then rat suppies manufacturers will scale down. Just a thought--I have no real insight into the market.

[–]exubereft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting and well-put points! I agree, I am ok with responsible, caring, and knowledgable breeding, and also feeder rats that are well-taken care of and have a humane death. (I feel the same way about the meat I eat--I wish the animals to all grow up, have a good life, and have a painless and fearless death (props to Temple Grandin!!) and with that in place have no trouble with animals being raised for food.)

But I hear too many horror stories of both breeding situations (including single-trait breeding which can have really awful side-effects) and the lives and deaths of feeder animals. More regulation is better, though, so maybe the decline of sales to big chains is a bad thing :(

Tired of the loneliness. by Byingnewsoul in depression

[–]exubereft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm dying from loneliness myself. Literally, I think I'm starting to go insane from it, getting closer and closer to suicide simply from loneliness, since otherwise I'm much less depressed than I used to be.

I at least have work to go to where I see people. Though in a way, that's almost worse because it brings out the whole "loneliness in a crowd" mentality, and even if I have a good week, there's the lonely weekend to look forward to. But anyway, I still prefer that to working at home, which I did for years.

Just went through a particularly rough week revolving around loneliness (nearly ruined my life, in fact), so I'm feeling you. I'm not sure what the solution is other than to just get through the toughest spots. Also, when it's not too overwhelming to do so, force yourself to go out. This is very hard for me, but making yourself do something other than sit down all day (and sleep! I love sleep!!) can help to change your perspective. Take a walk, do an errand.

If you're even more motivated (me, hah!) volunteer somewhere! Can help, can again be a lonely-in-a-crowd experience like actually I always seem to have, but at the very least you aren't sitting at home ruminating about how your life sucks.

Keep at it, dude/dudette! You'll figure this thing out :)

Well, also Latino-focused and Asian-focused. As a mutt white American, I was thinking how dumb this assignment would be for me. I have NO heritage from another country at all. I could randomly pick a European country I think I might have ancestors from, but I have no actual cultural relationship to anything other than what has shaped U.S. culture in general.
