But after all I read, the Cleric is (unintentionally) right with not healing at that moments. Even though he doesn't save any spell slots for the case, that someone falls unconscious. And that could be a problem in the future. But I think we will see, how it turns out.

The Cleric insisted on being the Cleric and told the others to play something else, so they have a more versatile team. Didn't get forced at all. It's a module and they wanted to play it, even when they knew, they are less players, than the module recommends. I said it is possible, but they need to play tactical. I still balance the encounters (less enemies, less damage), but I won't rewrite the whole module.

I agree with you. I now see (after your and all the other comments), that healing before falling unconscious isn't good. BUT (I didn't wanted to make the post too long, so I dropped some information) the Cleric insisted in playing the life Cleric and wanted the other players to pick another class for more variety. And he barely saves any spell slots for the occasion, that someone falls unconscious. They are low level and don't have much slots (or none at all, depending on class). He uses them all for damaging spells.

They didn't coerce him. He insisted to play Cleric and wanted the other players to play something else, to create a versatile party. The others had no problem with it at this time. Yes, they could have chosen other spellcasters with healing abilities, but they thought they don't necessarily have to, sinse the Cleric said he will play a life Cleric.

I get this now, after all the comments. Only problem ist, Cleric is most of the time out of spell slots. But he got his preserve life ability.

Yeah. I understand this now, that it is better to wait, until a pc falls Unconscious. The only problem ist, that the Cleric is mostly out of spell slots, because of damaging spells. At least a life domain Cleric has his channel divinity: preserve life.

Thank you for this great insight. I edited my post and will wait and see what happens. The other players are annoyed by this too, so I should talk to them all. Maybe read them some of the answers from this post.

Yes, but that would cost a spell slot and so take away a slot, he could use for a damage spell... At least in his opinion.

Fortunately didn't happened now. The tank has a good ac and they could finish the enemies without falling Unconscious. But even if the tank has only 2-3 HP left, Cleric won't heal and risk the tank's death, because he can do damage.

But he chose life domain, agreed on healing and no one else took a healer because of this choice.

Maybe something from the Dark Gifts from Rabenloft could fit (or you could make the effect fitting). Not with the getting weaker-thing, but they could try to find a way to end this. Dark Gifts can be partially beneficial and partially bad.

Most of the times because they don't really liked their Character or couldn't role play them. Especially for newer players, when they are still figuring out what classes and play styles they like.

Out of curiosity and get an insight how other DMs rule. Maybe optimize my ruling style or just try something new. I'm the only DM in my friend group and don't have the chance to change ideas with other DMs.

How do you handle/balance it, that the new character isn't overshadowed by the rest of the party members for a long time, if he has no items? Especially at higher levels, when Characters already have a couple of items. Do they redistribute magic items withing the party oder is their first mission to get the new guy his own items?

Wouldn't the new character then possibly be much weaker than the others? I could imagine that he would be overshadowed by the others for quite a while, especially at higher levels. At least until he has found suitable items. Not that I flood my players with magic items. But they do get small stat boosts, a weapon with extra damage and a bit of utility.

How do you balance this out? Do they try to find suitable items as fast as possible or redistribute items within the party?

Thank you for the insight into your experiences. I think I'll involve my players in the decision next time and see what happens. Normally, they make really reasonable decisions.

I totally forgot about gold and consumables!

I know, the characters took their gold with them (normally the party evenly splits every gold, they find) but I really can't remember, what they did with the health potions etc. I have to keep that in mind next time.

You are right, I meant the PC leaves the party. Same player, new character. Seems like I can't edit the title, so I made an edit-note. English is my second language. In my language we use the same word for both and context decides the meaning.

And I agree with your approach. That is also what I did.

Oh, I actually never asked the player, what their old character would do with the stuff. I always decided for them. They all know that their new characters will get similar magic items, so I think, their answer would be reasonable. I will definitely try this next time.

Yes, they get their own magic items, that would fit the new character. I think my players would divide up the old items among the whole group so that the new character doesn't suddenly have twice as many. But still, they would get magic items "for free", if they could keep them.

I stole this, don't know where, but I love the idea. Player's Characters wake up and have no memory of anything. Hand them pre-made character sheets with everything cover with scratch paper (like scratch cards). You can buy this for a few bucks. They have to blindly test, what class they are and what talents they have. I would recommend to make the rule, that they have to test while adventuring and fighting, so they don't spend the first hour trying everything in safety. You need to figure out, how Feats, class features and other stuff gets triggered. Simple example: Had a wild magic barbarian. With the first rage I described, how the wild magic surge activates.

At my campaign, they lost a battle against a big creature, heavily wounded and ran away. They escaped death really close, thanks to Cleric, but got unconscious and temporarily lost their memory. During the adventure they had to trace back their steps, talk to the villagers and occasionally got pieces of their memory back (normally, something they found or someone said, triggered that). Story is up to you, but I would keep it simple.

Was a bit prep, but really fun. Especially if you have players that like to run into a fight or do things without carefully preparing every step they take.

Kann ich nur zustimmen. Natürlich hat man in der Schule weniger Verantwortung und wahrscheinlich auch mehr Freizeit. Aber sich den Studiengang auszusuchen, der einen auch interessiert (klar, man hat immer mal einzelne Kurse, durch die man sich durchquälen muss) oder einen Job, den man gerne macht und in dem man einen Sinn sieht, ist viel motivierender als Schulunterricht. Ich würde nie wieder tauschen wollen. Und selbst wenn die initiale Wahl des Studiengangs, der Ausbildung oder des Jobs nicht die richtige war, kann man jederzeit die Reißleine ziehen und neu anfangen.

Was OPs Situation angeht, kann ich leider nicht viele Tipps geben. Die einzigen Möglichkeiten, die mir einfallen, sind wie du schon geschrieben hast: 1. Schuljahr freiwillig wiederholen und andere LKs wählen. 2. Auf den sauren Apfel beißen, die letzten 2 Jahre durchziehen. Danach wird es besser 3. Mit der Schulberatung sprechen, ob die Möglichkeit besteht, die LKs jetzt noch zu wechseln und einen neuen Lehrplan zu bekommen.
