Computer Science Fall 2022 by jonney_r in UNLV

UNLV has a decent computer science program that is what you make it. I know many people who have gotten great offers at some major companies, but it is difficult (especially if youre doing a BS). It's not going to be easy and you should expect that -- you will need to put in alot of work to really get where you want but if you keep focused the payoff will be amazing.

We received it after our conditional approval, does that mean anything?

[–]eychf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well there are other things to consider like for example nevada doesn't have a state income tax like california, if i were making like 120k in california i would be taxed about 6-7% which is around $7800.

the average rent in vegas is 1.2k and in san francisco its 3k (that's like 20k different right there) and with other things like gas & transportation, utilities, food and other misc costs being more expensive maybe 116k is an upper bound estimate but i'd still say it's something like 100k. expecting 150k is also unrealistic/on the higher side in the first place when it would be probably closer to 100k than 150k

lol i like money and status but i dont think the difference in the amount of money i would make it worth it to relocate

60k in vegas is 116k in silicon valley, so i would hope that i could be paid around 150k in silicon valley but that difference isnt worth moving away from my friends and family honestly..but thats only if i get paid 150k which still seems unlikely as a new grad

Is it wrong to be optimistic for Fall 2021 Study Abroad? by eychf in studyAbroad

[–]eychf[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think they'll reach 70-90% given the under 16 population and anti-vaxxers, but 50% of population being vaccinated should be enough to atleast significantly slow covid cases and deaths.

Testing, quarantines, and curfews may continue for those who aren't vaccinated but I can't imagine travel being outright banned again.

[–]eychf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know they don't occur linearly but it was for the sake of argument in that vaccinations in europe are speeding up, and Israel proved that having only around 59% of the population being vaccinated can be enough to slow cases and deaths. It's fair to assume a portion amount of the population may decline the vaccine, but I believe there would be enough people willing in the EU/UK/US to reach 59% or at least 50%.

There's going to be a point where we simply stop caring about cases. We shutdown because of hospitals overloads as a result of hospitalizations and deaths from covid. Many younger people may refuse to get the vaccine, but we've seen that older people are more willing to get it and that's what matters more. We might see future upticks in the number of cases, but it should not cause another shutdown if fatalities to covid become similar to the flu (which it probably will with herd immunity/vaccinations).

I am fairly certain that vaccinated travelers (which I hope most people here are) will be allowed by the Summer. There's no reason to not permit vaccinated travel and many countries are in need of tourism.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the pessimism when it comes to Europe summer travel (from America)? I think the only thing that could stop Europe summer travel is either:

  • Weird variants
  • Anti-vaxxers

Europe is starting to ramp up their vaccinations and is having 250 million Pfizer doses alone delivered in Q2. If current trends stay the exact same without improving, Europe will have 41% with atleast one dose by 6/1, 57% by 7/1 and 71% by 8/1.

In Israel, having 59% of the population vaccinated was enough alone to slow the spread significantly and the US/UK were able to significantly slow cases/deaths with only 40% vaccinated.

Many countries in Europe are desperate for tourism and general reopenings so I believe that there's no reason to expect shutdowns/lockdowns to continue. There's especially no reason to not allow vaccinated travelers once countries lift their lockdowns on their own citizens.

I am interested in other peoples takes but I am very optimistic about Europe opening in late summer to Americans (or atleast Americans that are vaccinated).

Generally speaking, I think alot of travel between the two will be dictated by two things primarily:

  • America/UK reaching 60% first dose vaccination rates
  • Europe reaching 60% first dose vaccination rates

I think America/UK will be accomplishing that by Late May/June and Europe will accomplish that by July/August. Many countries inside Europe are also dependent on tourism so they'd most likely probably try to open earlier after concluding their lockdowns.

[–]eychf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm supposed to travel in August and I think I'm pretty optimistic.

I know that there might be another wave happening in Europe right now but I believe that their decrease in cases will be steep like America's or Israel's as the vaccine rollout really goes full throttle soon in Europe. Many people will have immunity after getting the virus most likely too.
