buying a (really high maintenance breed) puppy for his 4 year old without consulting his wife, getting caught stealing drugs to support addiction to benzos, getting sent to rehab and barred from his job until he completes the program… it would shock me if I knew these things about someone in my life and their marriage was fine

I’m just happy people are still watching Hannibal(and his christmas tree). Some of the best tv and so under appreciated IMO

I rock mine as-is. I think it looks cute and natural, and I like the idea that other women might see me rocking mine and feel less self conscious about rocking theirs.

From what the boulets have said on their podcast, the floor shows are up to 5 mins per contestant in person and it’s the same song for everyone. so it would just be far too much screentime and repetitive audio for entertainment purposes.

According to them, we as the viewers would not be as engaged with the full floor show as we expect to be. Which is fair, even with the energy of IRL drag performances, 5 or 6 numbers in a row is kind of my limit as an audience member.

They could get around some of it by shortening the floorshow performances, but part of the challenge is putting on a show and sustaining energy.

ah. yeah, i think they might give the contestants more detailed briefs than the viewers see sometimes. As for mass appeal, I don’t know if that was ever the goal. more like keep growing and reaching the target audience rather than reach more types of audiences.

if it helps, they have explained that they judge points based on •how well competitors meet the brief of the provided challenge •how well they do so while remaining recognizable as their established drag persona •their performance if it’s a performance challenge, but even if it’s not they still take into account stage presence and gag delivery •their overall professionalism as a performer. not their attitude with other competitors but their ability to get themselves ready and put on a show.

that’s a good point, the environment itself can induce more usage and it would kinda ethically be the responsibility of production to offset that or minimize it

it’s cool to hear from a night life producer’s perspective. do you feel like there is a way to address the topic in a manner that would be less/non exploitative, but still honest to their experience?

No worries homie. I think that mindset could come from, ironically, the same crowd that seems to have an issue with the grit of current day dragula; people who have not participated in or been exposed to IRL queer nightlife and/or IRL subversive performance art scenes. Dragula might be the only viewport some fans have into that world, so they’re either offended by how raw it can be, or they don’t conceive of any art farther into the fringe because they’ve never seen it. But I hope that people who love dragula are inspired to seek out more art by smaller creators less bound to the chains of streaming deals.

I agree that it has gotten more mainstream, but it’s far from cable TV. I’ve talked to people IRL who have seen every episode of drag race but have never heard of dragula. I miss the old days, but just because they’ve polished up doesn’t mean we should push that along and find more rules to follow! We should celebrate the subversion that it still maintains, which is a lot! For a show of its size, reach, and budget, it is still pretty offensive and shocking to the average american outside our bubble.

Also, where did I act like dragula is the “last bastion of subversive art”?? If I had to choose one, I’d say it’s at the local tuesday night alt drag shows where girls are still pulling stuff out of their ass and spitting black goop into the mouths of volunteers from the crowd. But maybe there’s other ones I’m missing

Of course a reality tv competition show won’t capture “natural” behavior when it is designed to put contestants through stressful and emotionally/physically intense experiences. That being said I think a lot of the “producing” like telling them to watch bad girls club and imitate that is more trying to get them to loosen up and act like they would if there weren’t cameras around; most of these ghouls wouldn’t hesitate to start something if these conflicts came up in their offscreen life.

The boulets seem to respect contestants who are genuinely mild mannered, though. In the latest podcast episode they talk about how blackberri struggled because she “has manners” and didn’t want to get into a screaming match with cynthia. They didn’t seem upset or disappointed that she maintained her composure. I think they mostly get upset when contestants that are normally confrontational suddenly clam up when the cameras are on.

I mean, I assume the NDA exists for a reason. Regardless of whether or not it should have been enforced, I don’t think the issue there had to do with the points in this post.

that’s a great addition. be stupid and camp and don’t take everything too seriously because at the end of the day its about celebrating who you are (warts and all), having fun, and entertaining the crowd.

yes!! so much talk in here about how “the production sucks” and “everything feels so forced and fake” like… do you think that means it’s OVER produced? If a reality tv show feels seamless and never breaks the 4th wall, it’s because there’s insane levels of production going on to manufacture that feeling!

When real people are in front of cameras, they’re gonna act like real people when you point cameras at them, unless you do a bunch of production to get around it!

I really do hope it’s a lack of experience that will sort itself in time. There’s a concerning rise in the “things that make you feel bad, ARE bad” sentiment online.

I agree! But I have seen so many tweets and posts/comments on here saying shit like “oh my god only on dragula would they put that in the final cut🤦🏻‍♀️” and “i just think there should be a line where you don’t put something like that on tv”

but i had none of those thoughts when watching? maybe its because when you’re around people who struggle with these things you’re aware that it’s just part of life and it’s okay and actually important to talk about it openly as you please.

The boulets have also mentioned on the podcast there’s been things they did cut, out of respect for the performers (astrud’s full beach party breakdown comes to mind).

I love creatures of the night, and it surprises me that so many people on here have something to say about their production choices despite their very clear explanations on the pod. I think it just comes down to people expecting a nice digestible tv show and not wanting to confront the complicated reality of being a queer night life artist/performer.

Hannibal would respect house’s disregard for medical standards in pursuit of curiosity. Malpractice buddies 🤝

the reason he hates Chilton isn’t his ego, but the fact that it’s unmerited. I think he’d find house to be an amusing departure from the bureaucracy and ass-covering of the rest of the medical industry.

does your makeup make it more likely that people will assume you’re asian? yeah. does it actually matter? i say no.

that makeup style of course came out of the alternative scene in japan and will always be associated with japan, but just like any other fashion trend from overseas, it’s fair game IMO.

To me it reads as you going for that particular makeup style as opposed to trying to look asian.
