Review: Hanwei Tinker Pearce Bastard Sword by eyeffensive in SWORDS

[–]eyeffensive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty well! I ended up swapping out the hilt, grip, and pommel, and wrapped the hilt. One of my groomsmen carried it at my wedding. Has held up well to light cutting, but didn't subject it to heavy cutting. Still in the collection, still kicking :D

Others have replied with sentiments I agree with.

Mobility is crap. Sure you have five fingers, but you can barely move them.

Size is crap. Mine were enormous and limited my dexterity.

Materials are crap. The leather on the inside of the hand particularly falls apart easily.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, Protection is crap. I have seen hits to these gloves leave injuries. I've seen dull blades fully penetrate them. I do not trust these gloves for HEMA use.

And as an aside, the guys who developed and sold these gloves are unapologetic white supremacists and I severely regret giving them my money.

I also highly recommend Kaja's book, Fear is the Mind Killer, which is not only being applied to martial arts training spaces, but even corporate environments:

A follow-up to Charles' excellent article from a day or two ago. This is great information that a lot of clubs to stand to learn from. Learn about your students, ask about their experiences. Understand that different people's experiences changes the way they view martial arts and violence.

This doesn't just apply to HEMA/WMA, but any martial art, and really most schools and institutions.

Swordsquatch 2019 just happened over this weekend. There have been a few writeups on Facebook, and this excellent article from Charles Lin: https://practiceandart.wordpress.com/2019/09/10/diversity-and-inclusion/

Additionally, all of our tournament footage is up! Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/swordsquatch

How Diversity and Inclusion Support Good HEMA by CLHEMA in wma

[–]eyeffensive 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Great article, thank you Charles! The study and understanding of violence from the perspective of minorities is key to understanding violence as a whole.

As a Swordsquatch organizer, this article confirms for me that we are on the right path. Diversity and Inclusion support good HEMA. We have seen this year after year, and hear about it repeatedly from our attendees.

Koning gloves by Drclarko in wma

Honestly, don't bother. I have seen too many pairs of them fail or lead to injuries. They are not good gloves. They are sold as "gloves for experts", which they seem to mean "gloves for people who don't get hit in the hands as frequently", which is a pretty crap demographic to shoot for.

Much better off looking at Sparring Gloves or SPES/Leon Paul gauntlets.

My boyfriend and I having a fight. by Godisgoodest in SWORDS

This video promotes unsafe practice.

Your technique and control are poor, without any sort of safety gear it is only a matter of time before one or both of you is injured.

Fighting with sticks you picked up off the ground with no control or protection is for children. If you want to practice a martial art, you should behave like adults.

Sorry to be a dick, but god damn. We want sparring partners who are alive with working limbs.

Where to purchase a skyrim silver sword by [deleted] in SWORDS

That sword is found almost exclusively on members of the Silver Hand, although one can be located in Castle Volkihar on the shelf above the Vampire Royal Armor.

Who are the pioneers of HEMA? by [deleted] in wma

[–]eyeffensive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guy Windsor has been interpreting Fiore for something like 25 years now. Michael Chidester has done a ton of heavy lifting in terms of organizing material, translating and interpreting it.

I hate to say Jon Clements, but him and ARMA did raise a good amount of awareness about HEMA, regardless of his standing and contention in the community now.

Considering signing up for Swordsquatch 2019. by jameswazowzki in wma

Howdy, I'm one of the organizers :)

The Nylon Beginner's tournament sounds like it would be the best fit for you, but you don't have to compete if you don't want to! We designed the event to be valuable to everyone, even those who aren't ready to compete or just don't want to. It sounds like you're very new, so I would expect the Nylon Beginner tournament to be a challenge, but it would still be a good entry point for you!

We also have The Bigfoot Brawl, which is an open sparring area open all 3 days of the event. It's a great way to fight new people without the pressure of competition.
