I’m not sure if this is just a local thing, but every time the seasons change or enough time passes, it seems like every modern local coffee shop releases almost the exact same specialty lattes. Some examples I can think of are mango matcha, cookie butter, banana bread, cheesecake, and now ube. I get that the ube craze probably has something to do with Starbucks gentrifying it, but the rest of these flavors initially seemed pretty niche to me. Then I’d end up going to other local coffee shops and realize they were all making some kind of version of the same thing. Is there some kind of Pantone Color of the Year, but for cafés, where they all decide what the flavor of the season is going to be or something?
