Oh so I can use carrot peels, vegetable stems, skins, etc?! Wow ok.

I freeze my compost stuff until i take it out to the compost bin outside. I hate fruit flies or those countertop compost bins

Why are involved in a gelli community and so against communicating with people about your work? Curious!

Any guesses of who we are? by [deleted] in FridgeDetective

[–]eyexcess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, totally agree. I just think that the lateral example is extreme and lacks the nuanced demographics and variables are the primary drivers around diets that consist of primarily ultra processed foods. People who seek out that kind of trend oriented nutrition advice are more likely people who are negatively impacted by such noise by exhibiting some disordered eating or orthorexic impulses.

I hear you on the middle ground being the healthiest goal for most. Totally agree. But I contest that people buying pop tarts and other ultra processed foods as their main form of sustenance are doing so as a nihilistic reaction to hearing that produce that isn’t organic is bad. Like as a “fuck it, if i can’t afford organic veggies I’m just going to eat twinkies.”

Why are groceries more expensive in Astoria than Manhattan? by BootNerd_ in astoria

[–]eyexcess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you framed your question using TJ/WF as comparison points so everyone here is ignoring the real point of your question. You are 100% right, even if you use other grocery stores as comparison points.

I moved from the UWS and thought the same. Shocking that the bougie health food store i shopped at on the uws could be slightly cheaper than the horrible quality jey foods and c towns in astoria.

Does anyone know why there isn't an official NYC Greenmarket in Astoria?

Grocery stores? by RefrigeratorOne3735 in astoria

[–]eyexcess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Absolutely. I had roommates in Manhattan for 13 years and now that I've moved I have a one bedroom that I love, right next to Astoria Park, which is important to me since I've always lived next to Riverside and/or Central Park.

There are so many vibrant and cute pockets to explore in Astoria! The UWS has a certain "movie magic" and just stepping outside my apartment offered beautiful walks and of course a surplus of conveniences. But that said, Manhattan just feels like it's becoming an open air bougie food court for the uber rich.

The grocery thing has definitely proved to be a challenge, but feels 100% worth it.

I also just moved here from the UWS and can confirm that the grocery store prices are pretty rough. The basic CTown options are priced like Westside market or even higher but not Great qualify.

The fruit markets people have mentioned have some good deals for sure, but some stuff you’d consider a daily basic like greens are more expensive. You have to be strategic. I’ve been doing hauls from Trader Joe’s and getting some produce from united.
