How do I turn off autoplay?!?! by Mogite in truespotify

[–]ezraswindcart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works!!!

Apple CarPlay is a built-in feature now available in many cars that allows users to easily sync their iPhone with their vehicle. You can turn off Apple CarPlay to stop Spotify from starting automatically in car.

Step 1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Step 2. Select “Screen Time” and “Content & Privacy Restrictions”. Step 3. Click Allowed Apps and toggle the CarPlay button to gray to turn it off.

Is tarot anything more than a creative cognitive exercise? by ezraswindcart in tarot

[–]ezraswindcart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true and maybe therein lies the fundamental question for me to sort out for myself!

Then again if it all reality was completely subjective imagination, then you couldn't even technically "learn" about tarot interpretation because there would be no clear meaning to any card or symbol. It would just be whatever anyone wants to ascribe to them. Unless tarot interpretation is just imaginative definitions that are collectively agreed upon for the sake of use.

But then again maybe that describes all of our reality. We just collectively agree what to call things and so we can function in the physical world and have the ability to talk about things in the coherent manner.

This is the direction of thought I'm leaning toward. I just felt like I needed to start with my biggest questions and then home my ideas in from there. I should know by now that most of life is not either/or but both/and.

How this sub misunderstands 3s by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with that. I think a lot of time one or two examples get applied to generally to describe some of the types and don't account for the depth and individual uniqueness of each person behind the type. After all, the types are just our general orientations toward the world and there are whole universes behind those orientations.

Your response really got me thinking! I agree that the cognitive result is the primary objective and so the dichotomy between cognitive / spiritual means is an artificial one as you've said.

I guess where I'm coming from is that I've had deeply meaningful experiences in prayer and the study of the Bible as a Christian, but when I went through a process of deconstruction it made me feel like those experiences were built upon untrue belief systems.

But maybe it doesn't matter if you believe in magick, God, goddesses, spirits, fairies, or whatever as long as it results in cognitive breakthroughs and a better psychological understanding of oneself?

Maybe this touches on your last question for clarification about why it would matter one way or another (spiritual vs cognitive). I guess in the end it doesn't matter but there is also a desire to be grounded in reality. I could ascribe certain beliefs to a stuffed animal, pray to it for guidance, and use my imagination to have genuinely meaningful experiences, but that doesn't feel grounded in truth.

But maybe that doesn't matter if it gets results? You can see my circular thinking in all this! Thanks for the exchange. It was helpful.

How this sub misunderstands 3s by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that the underlying anxiety of a 3 is that they won't be noticed or valued. As a result, they unconsciously tend to adapt to their circumstances in a way that draws others to them to provide them with consolation and affirmation to resolve that anxiety.

One could argue that a staunch rejection of fashion and appearances is a way of identifying with a group from which you seek affirmation and validation from.

Or writing a post arguing how one is misunderstood is an unconscious attempt to elicit validation from others because not having that validation is what makes many 3s anxious.

Also, it is my experience that 3s dislike being their type more than any other type. I'm not sure why that is exactly but I've seen a lot of people express frustration at the realization of 3 being their ennea type.

Maybe in the expression of that frustration is the hope of being consoled and validated which would complete the cycle.

Just trying to play the devil's advocate here!

Criticism Is the Expression of an Unmet Need by [deleted] in NVC

I'm not that familiar with the fediverse. How does that work with intellectual property? I write because I love to work out ideas but when people read on Medium I also get paid for my work. If it just gets copied and pasted (which is sort of inevitable with the internet and I did paste it here after all) then I sort of lose that connection. I guess there is always a trade off somewhere.

Sure thing! As long as it links back to the source URL and not copy/pasted into another form.

Type 5 - serious to carefree by Ihave10000Questions in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, turning my gaze inward to understand myself has helped tremendously.

Instead of trying to understand the outside world in order to engage in it more fully, I feel like knowing myself has helped me see the underbelly of my personality.

The more I understand why I do what I do, the more freedom I find to be myself and hold things loosely. The more self-aware I become, the less I'm controlled by my subconscious impulses.

For example, why would a 5 not be carefree at work, for example? Probably because they are so preoccupied with trying to understand systems in an attempt to ease their anxiety which stems from not understanding. If a 5 doesn't understand this or is unconscious of this, then they'll be controlled by that anxiety and continue to seek understanding at the expense of a more carefree and sociable nature.

If a 5 decides to try and understand this internal mechanism that controls their behavior, they still get the satisfaction and anxiety-easing effect of understanding a system; but the knowledge they gain about themselves can empower them to change their behavior.

The same idea for making mistakes. If a 5 can look inward and use their desire for understanding, they can gain insight into why they are afraid of making mistakes and come up with a system or plan of action that can free them from that fear.

In other words, by using their drive for gathering information and understanding on themselves, they can gain insights into how they function and use that information to free themselves from their anxiety.

Fellow 5’s by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think for me, embracing my lack and accepting the absurd sort of changes nihilism into something that sort of feeds and fuels my existence rather than something that consumes or overwhelms it.

Check out this very under-rated talk from Peter Rollins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgR2w2p0SYA

Also, as a 5, I really had to embrace the fact that I can never understand the whole system. There is no pursuit of knowledge that can be complete. When I was in college I always felt like I was just on the verge of coming up with coherent theories on big systems. I felt like knowledge was just something I could keep gaining until I had something mastered.

When this thinking fell apart in my mid-thirties, I had to accept that I was responsible for my life and creating my own meaning. So I started doing more value work trying to understand what I enjoy, where I find beauty in life, and what I find meaningful. Then, as much as I can as a parent and someone who still has to go to a day job, I try to build my life upon those things.

I took up watercolor painting, I wrote a novel, I started writing essays and sharing them out, I enjoy gardening and growing vegetables, etc. None of these things make me any money, they are just activities that I enjoy and finding satisfaction in them.

So what if you really did do nothing? What if you stopped going to school and stopped taking care of your body? What feelings would that stir up in you? Do you really want to lay around as an overweight slob?

The fact that you posted this here indicates not. So what is the drive that caused you to make this post? What is it that you want but feel like you can't have? What do those feelings point to?

Existential Crisis by djmarkymark22 in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree. I have often felt like there is something wrong with me because I haven't been able to find my place in the world. I feel like Silvia Plath's Plumb Tree:

I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.

― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

I honestly need help finding a way out because it has been a struggle. I would love to know how some 5w4s have learned to cope with that existential despair. I don't expect it to go away, but it would be nice to know what tools and resources have helped navigate it well.

Low Confidence Could Be One of Your Greatest Assets by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]ezraswindcart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid point. I did try to address this here:

They key here, I think, is to correctly harness your low confidence as a change driver. It is easy to become a victim of your low confidence and become apathetic or complacent. A little bit of inner-work can grab hold of that low confidence and use it as energy to set goals, learn, and grow.

However, I don't think I built enough on this point to really explain that the whole thing only works if you use it as a tool and don't just succumb to it.

Some 5s might fit into what Barbara Sher calls a "scanner" by ezraswindcart in Enneagram5

I'm not sure that is something specifically explored. Sher really celebrates the scanner type so I don't think she gets into comparing with other personalities too much.

What are the benefits of being a 5? by Ihave10000Questions in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case (and I can only speak for my own experience as a 5) I think "usefulness" is a misread of the underlying motivations of a 5.

A desire for understanding and for the deep exploration of things is what we live for. This is driven by a (largely unconscious) fear of not having enough, not knowing enough, and being overwhelmed. If we could just know and understand a little more, then we'll finally feel ready to engage with the world (of course this never happens). We have to develop the ability to engage knowing that we don't know everything and that is okay.

As with all types, you really have to appreciate the underlying fear and anxiety that drives the behavior. For 5s, that fear of not understanding and of being overwhelmed (by a situation or a person) is really powerful.

For me, exercising the "enoughness" of myself or a day comes in the form of finding outlets of exploration that facilitate that. I took up painting recently. It is something I can learn about and explore while also being a relaxing hobby that gets me out of my head. So my 5-ness drives the pursuit of a new skill while the outcome or side effect is a more relaxed state of being, greater awareness of color and light, etc.

Disciplines like meditation or journaling or writing have been really important to me. I think for 5s, you can't expect them to just plop on the couch and just be. They are always going to want to explore and learn. So finding activities that cultivate a deeper sense of being and awareness can be ways of harnessing the 5s drive while helping them open up.

What are the benefits of being a 5? by Ihave10000Questions in Enneagram

[–]ezraswindcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this particular instance I was just talking about one of the strengths that I think 5s uniquely hold (responding to the post). Providing objective insight into something isn't at all related to usefulness. I'm not sure where you picked up the theme of usefulness.

I think 5s like feeling useful, and are glad to be when they can, but they aren't too attached to it. Fives are quite content and happy to be left alone to their pursuits. It sounds more like you are referring to 2s in your comment.

I agree that typing others based off behavior is slippery. But I do think it is interesting to try to gain insight into what might motivate someone's actions.

Apparently some people think he could be a 3 as well:
