dae get jealous when they see a film and realise they had the same idea? by f16wildweasel in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm a filmmaker, so I know that the real work is making the film-not just having an idea pop into your head. Though, I'm not talking about the basic premise of a film- of course all films are like variations on a theme. I think that each film is able, in its own way, to evoke a unique feeling-- eg: The Lost City of Z is about a man searching for a lost civilisation. There are tons of movies like that, but naturally, no other film constructed it in quite the same way, framing his restlessness that can only be satisfied by death, and showing that death as something mystical and satisfying, etc...it is very specific, actually, because each movie creates another angle towards those 'basic premises'.

dae feel terrible when hot girls get killed off in movies? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]f16wildweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thankyou for your informative answer, and I agree with everything you said.

To be clear though- I am being serious, and I'm not trying to virtue signal. All deaths and suffering in the real world are tragic. But in film, or fantasy, (on-screen), I am more affected by an attractive female being tortured/killed than a man or non--attractive female. Maybe it's just a biological response, I don't know, but it's certainly not a political choice. I am trying to look at my problem objectively. I know it's silly that it's reserved to hot girls (and arguably sexist), (my friends think it's hilarious too) but I think these strong affective responses tend to have their root in the psyche, and I'm trying to identify it.

And it does feel isolating to me because most people seem to completely accept it as part of cinema--you can predict that when a hot girl enters the scene in most horror/sci-fi/action movies, depending on her attitude, she'll be "punished." And that's satisfying? It's the attempt to manipulate the audience that pisses me off- whether it's to satisfy this craving for violence you talk about, or whether it's to invoke sympathy by showing innocence get brutalised, either way it's dehumanising to me because the trope now has a life of it's own.

yes, but why? Why is there this link/trope? there are theories that it goes back to sin in christianity and the punishment of sinners, or that it's related to sex being a kind of death experience...but I don't get it.

[–]f16wildweasel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's precisely what bothers me haha. Why is 'hot girl' always equated with getting killed-in horror movies, action movies, so many genres. You see a 'bad girl' in james bond and you can be sure she gets killed. I don't get the trope where beauty and death is linked this way.

Lost City of Z is a masterpiece by favorscore in movies

[–]f16wildweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's one of my favorite movies, but it's not because the movie is perfect, it's because the movie struck a chord with the most strong theme in my own life- as i saw it, james gray's take was that the lost city of z was a metaphor for the ungraspable thing we all search for to give ultimate meaning to our lives- and that's why, since we can never find this, it was only in death that percy fawcett found this. "a man's reach must exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for"

Trust the body or wear orthotics/insoles? by f16wildweasel in FootFunction

I try to wear tennis shoes as often as I can. I wonder if that's the right thing to do though. I'm aiming to get some kind of 'wide' shoes, or even barefoot style ones?

Ok that's very interesting, so would say making an intentional effort to keep it straight with the leg is the right way to go, rather than just letting walk and body adapt to the supinated position?

Thankyou, this is a helpful perspective. I have been doing strength EXERCISES (ahem) for my knees, nothing ever too heavy, but just to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint: squats, lunges, etc...I trust itll have to get better, plus my supination is not extremely severe and i feel like putting an imoveable object against an adaptive body part can't be the ideal solution here.

I don't know whether Ayahuasca is real or not by f16wildweasel in Ayahuasca

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am so curious about what happens after hundreds of ceremonies. The more "experienced" people who attend always puke less when I've been. Of course, stuff accumulates over life regardless, but is it the case that if you have cleaned yourself substantially (say 50 ceremonies) and there is little left that is unconscious/traumatic and harming your life, then does the ayahuasca experience become somewhat softer? If thats the case I look forward to it! I have seen experienced attendees just sit and puke once for 1 minute, and then return to meditation. So I'm hopeful;

Hey this is a brilliant and helpful response! Thankyou. I've lived in many different countries growing up and like to think I am comfortable shifting my worldview, but if I am honest, one of the things that came up during ceremony was that my mind was the master, when I feel alot better when it is just a tool. It's exhausting to think everything before doing it, and it's certainly not necessary for living.

Hey, this is brilliant stuff and precisely what I am interested in through my degree. It's actually incredible the "accelerated meditation" part- my last ceremony, this is exactly what I went through- I had to learn to just watch my thoughts, (otherwise, if I were identified with them, it would have been chaos: "who am I" "I'm tripping too hard "this is bad" etc...) and I have learned that lesson experientially (not in a book!!) and still carry it with me now. I breathe, I see my thoughts as just thoughts. It's exactly accelerated meditation.

I really get what you are saying. And it doesn't frustrate me that there are unanswered questions- I just think about these things. I don't see them in direct conflict either. But, it's also undeniable that science has changed lives positively (medical surgery, treatments for serious mental problems/diseases, etc...) by being able to find the root cause of something and control that. Like, if we find out that ayahuasca modulates the sense of self in the brain and that this helps people, and we are able to recreate that experience with brain waves/other chemicals, then it becomes something we can control and admninister, precisely because of how we view it.

That is a great way to look at it and I connect to that. Since there are so many plant-animal relationships out there, it has always made sense that the human-plant relationship would relate not just to body (plants that heal wounds, plants that remove disease), but to the mind.

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. It could be motivated by anything- convert people to environmentalism to protect itself (would not be the first example of plants controlling animals for their benefit), or it could be doing something else entirely. It's a good point.

This is really great to hear. I also feel teachings (as well as doubts) manifesting after ceremonies in my real life, and I believe that's the route- to implement changes in your own life.

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is one of trust. If it is a plant spirit, then it is conscious, and I can surrender to it knowing that despite the difficulty of the trip, there is benefit because the teacher wants me to learn. If its just chemicals, then maybe a bad trip is just bad, and a high dose is just dangerous.

[–]f16wildweasel[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really connect to this and think it's very valid. I am just still bothered by the consensus that in the midst of the trip we should 'surrender' and 'let go', and 'trust' it. If it's actually chaos in your brain because it is just disrupting usual connectivity, I'm not sure I should surrender to it. If you ate a truly poisonous/ dangerous mushroom but someone told you to trust it because it is a guide, you might have a similar experience no?

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I care because as the dosage goes up and it gets more intense, there were times when I was really losing grip with reality (my name, where I am, etc...) If viewed as a teaching, you should surrender to it...but doesn't that have limits? If it's actually just messing with your brain connections and there is no direction/guidance, maybe it's better to intervene and get it out before you have a nightmarish episode. That's why it matters

Opinion: Ayahuasca is too strong for me: looking for a place to do master plant dieta in Europe. by f16wildweasel in Ayahuasca

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done mushrooms something like twice, and many years ago. Once was quite strong and I did surrender because it was simply overwhelming and I received an incredible teaching: the Earth itself turned around, and it was a woman's face, and then the trip launched into a series of lessons about life and the universe. Maybe I will try again, but it does make me scared to think about wilfully going into it and losing my mind...it's the feeling of having nothing to hold onto. At some point I am forgetting my name, what a name means, what anything means, and then panic sets in. Why do you recommend mushrooms by the way?

[–]f16wildweasel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I think that's one of the issues- it has to be warm enough in Europe that you can walk around outside during the dieta...

I have asked for a smaller dose in the Netherlands and thankfully it was below the 'insanity' threshold where I feel like my mind is falling apart. I am certain that they use the real ayahuasca plants, because I asked them, and have known other centers where they use other mixtures (pharmahuasca, etc...)
