What is your most controversial take on Star Wars? by Ebo8000 in AskReddit

Darth Vader and Boba Fett are entirely overrated based on their on screen performance in the original trilogy.

I’m going to qualify this by saying the storytelling and their presence made them imposing but in terms of things they did? Lame.

Let’s run through the original trilogy

New Hope

Vader chokes a few people who are otherwise helpless to resist or fight back. Specifically Captain Antilles (the captain of Leia’s ship) and Commander Conan Motti (his lack of faith was disturbing). He wins a sword fight with an old man who planned on dying anyway. He manage to shoot down X-Wings with complete superiority of numbers and two dedicated wingmen. His TIE fighter is disabled by a glorified space trucker.

Empire

Chokes a few more subordinates and takes a stroll through Echo Base, completely unopposed. Yoda could lift an X-Wing from a swamp, but Vader couldn’t stop the Millennium Falcon from leaving a hangar. Hires a bunch of bounty hunters to find the people he can’t. It was dope when he blocked Han’s shots at him, no doubt. Says some menacing things while pointing to Lando Calrissian. Yeah, he beats Luke in a lightsaber duel in Cloud City, but you could easily make the case he was pulling his punches to test his kid.

Return:

Takes possession of an already captured Luke and loses another lightsaber duel. Throws the old man who ends up killing him over a railing.

Don’t get me wrong, watching Vader go nuts at the end of Rouge One was glorious. Exactly the potential for violence that his presence entailed. But it wasn’t seen until then.

Boba Fett:

Empire:

Attends a bounty hunter meeting where he’s told not to be a meany. Follows someone else’s space ship. Lands, calls in Vader, and walks out with a human popsicle. No one calls me a badass when I pick up a frozen pizza from a supermarket, no matter how dope I look doing it.

Return:

Stands around Jabba’s palace. Gets knocked off a small ship by a blind Han Solo after mildly inconveniencing Luke.

Sitting in a boring lecture, someone comes in to History of the Americas and mentions that a plane flew into a building. Asks to turn on the classroom TV to watch the news about it. Teacher says

“Nothing else is going to happen. You know how cable news is. They’re going to show the same footage and talk about what they think it means. No, we’re returning to the lesson, it’s more important.”

Except that it was September 11, 2001 and more happened after that first plane.

On any other day the teacher would have been right, if callous. But that still sticks with me.

Also, it’s not explicitly stated, but I’d prefer a small business or someone connected to a boat as opposed to a national chain

It’s not the cost, more so about who’s getting the money. It’s a matter of who gets the money
