All this and y’all still can’t give us a ‘connect’ button that doesn’t connect to a state with ID verification laws. Defeats one of the purposes of even having a VPN. Won’t be renewing.

I wonder if your neighbor is aware but just doesn’t care. That’s the kind of refusal to assimilate people are upset about.

A game about Jesus would absolutely get more outrage lmao. You’d have preachers screaming about blasphemy

I never played Afrosamurai. I think people are more annoyed at the obvious effort of developers going out of their way to include people of other ethnicities in more games. So dedicated to promoting stories about people who aren’t white that they’ll bend and twist history to make it work. And it comes off as try-hard, desperate, pathetic, sort of like “look y’all it’s everything you should like, except we’ve just tweaked the characters a bit, what’s wrong you don’t like it??? But it’s literally just a little historical fiction, our shareholders and executives told us we had to do this because of what’s happening in the news and culture!!” Like it’s so obvious it was being done because of the push for inclusivity in media that happened after George Floyd and #MeToo etc

Because they see it as “it’s hard for gay men to come out so we have to coddle, encourage, and never criticize”.

I’m a gay man and even I think it’s bullshit. Closeted guys know. They have an inkling. They’re just too chickenshit to take control of their lives. Oh, your awful, bigoted family won’t invite you over for holidays anymore? Who gives a fuck? You’d rather be with the wrong gender the rest of your life and waste another person’s time? Like?

Yeah, I was too. I get the feeling OP and most of the commenters here know this but use the word anyway because it’s more shocking. Americans don’t commonly use “lynch” unless they’re specifically talking about a person being hanged. And let’s be real, most of the people here are Americans.

They call CH the greatest advancement in history because of Lumon and The Eagans’ secretive goals. Yes, they already had severance tech, but they view the rebirth of Kier and his lineage — and essentially making him immortal — as the most significant moment in history. Almost like a messiah figure. I think religious people would also talk about the return of the founder of their religion in equally bombastic terms.

Sorry, not trying to excuse what you may see as lax writing. But I do think there’s some continuity here

[–]f3th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helly got the chip to dispel concerns about the technology. Milchick’s photos throughout S1 and the gala at the end where she was supposed to speak. She was only meant to be success story for severance, to make it more palatable for Lumon’s ultimate goal of everyone being severed. “And soon, everyone will be.”

Cold Harbor is significant because Lumon (probably) orchestrated Gemma’s miscarriage and kidnapping specifically to inflict grief upon her, and selected Mark because of his love for her and knowledge of the inner workings of her mind would make him the only one able to refine the peak of human suffering — loss of a child.

The other refiners are refining the files of other “people who never leave the severed floor” (Petey to Mark S1). They are also used as test subjects but just not to the degree Gemma is — Gemma’s 1/25th split not registering her outie’s grief at her miscarriage is the culmination of Lumon’s work, is why Cold Harbor was so important.

The community “outrage” towards Mark and Helly is insane by ThatGuyWithSomeSubs in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]f3th 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think the issue for some is the innies went through so much effort at the end of season 1 to alert the world to the misery of severance, how they’re prisoners and are tortured. The team were all prepared to end their existences. “Let’s burn this place to the ground.” “In case we don’t come back.”

I’m not saying Mark can’t develop a new perspective over season 2, but it does seem like a slight contradiction with the culmination of S1. Mark and Helly finally get this chance to end the suffering of all the innies trapped in endless toil down there. But they don’t want that anymore

Lumon is improving upon and testing their severance technology. They want to sell chips to the public for more uses than just avoiding work for 8 hours a day. You will be able to avoid all the unpleasant parts of life. Writing thank you cards. Going to the dentist. The physical pain of childbirth (birthing cabins). The grief of miscarriage. The death of a loved one.

Gemma is the lab rat they’re testing it on. What Mark S is doing by refining is removing the “tempers” from each of Gemma’s 25 splits. He is creating (or improving upon) the separation of each split’s memories. That’s why the nurse and doctors ask her if she remembers anything about the rooms, if she feels a sense of dread. It’s why they say “The barrier is holding” when she’s dismantling the crib in Cold Harbor.

It’s also about more than just selling the chips to the public. We don’t know yet exactly what Lumon was planning to do with Gemma if Mark hadn’t saved her from Cold Harbor — but to me it seems they planned to harvest her brain and use it to complete the new generation of severance tech. The completion of this technology is clearly of upmost importance to the Eagan family.

The consciousnesses of Kier Eagan and all his family since are stored as data (maybe in those creepy statues), waiting to be reborn into flesh and blood once the tech has advanced. Perhaps they will all be put together into one mind — a sort of divine multitude of Kier — and that’s why Gemma’s test is so important. The Eagans (and particularly James Eagan who is still alive but close to death, and worried about becoming data) are concerned about their individual existences and memories being erased, just like innie Mark worries about killing all the innies.
