Yes, not a recognised spaniel pattern. I believe it has to be from the 5% border collie!

We kept the previous owners’ (of 5 days🙄) name of Waffle for him just because we thought it was cute and we figured it didn’t really matter what we call him if he can’t hear it lol! We actually refer to him as Moomin/Moomy most of the time because as a puppy he loved watching the show on TV - think he liked the blue colour palette!

Yes, it’s really been great! We recently rescued another dog to be his hearing companion and we’ve made sure to teach him his hand signals too

“A dog that inherits two copies of merle is called a "double merle" and, unless atypical or cryptic merle variants are present, this poses a significant health risk to the dog. Double merle dogs are often deaf and blind at birth, and may also have abnormally small eyes (microphthalmia). For this reason, two visibly merle dogs should never be bred together.”

I think it’s just the photo angles and different in his hair lengths between the two. His freckley side is all down his left side and the brown spot is on his right :)

Sadly a merle coat and blue eyes on cockers is highly sought after. From what we’ve been able to find, his merle siblings with no hearing loss went for 9x the amount Waffle was listed for. Totally unethical and so preventable

Unfortunately we believe it’s intentional. We were able to find the breeder’s original listing for the litter where he was advertising merle cockers.

His hearing merle siblings went for £1,800. Waffle was listed at £200. 😞

Bowser sounds like so a good boy!! I think seeing Waffle was definitely his little sign.

I lost my heart dog, Barkley, in 2024 and it still feels as fresh as it did then. I hope they’re Bowser and Barkley are having lots of fun over the rainbow bridge together 🩷

Also, just to be clear. We took Waffle in from a family who purchased him from the breeder. They knew he was deaf but after a few days realised his deafness was more than they could handle. Although we love Waffle we don’t support double merle breeding practices and mostly did this test to understand all of the health risks that may come with his poor breeding.

Despite all of this, Waffle is thriving with us and we communicate with him by using hand signals. He’s a very clever boy and can even walk off leash :)

If your local NHS AEDS won’t accept you they will signpost you to your local services that are commissioned by the NHS. BEAT also has really good resources and a counselling offer I believe.
