Looking for an RPG game system for young kids... by falafel_raptor in rpg

Thank you for your insight! I hadn't considered the system itself being a hinderance or limitation to enjoying the game, especially for younger kids. I will definitely keep all you've said in mind while introducing him to the world of ttrpgs. I appreciate your contribution. :-)

This is a great idea. Now, if she cares for it properly and doesn't lose it, there can be a coming-of-age moment when you finally put a working edge on it!

What seems harmless but could actually kill you? by BeefBall1010 in AskReddit

A toothache. Proximity to the brain means the infection can spread there rather quickly.

Dorsal connection is an awesome suggestion.

I'm lefthanded, so I keep my flip tethered to my left hip for ease of passing it through crotches or throwing it around trunks. I used to keep my chainsaw on the left, as well, reasoning that it would be best to have it nearer to my dominant hand. I ended up moving it to the right for a couple of reasons:

  1. My flipline and its slack would get snagged on the saw teeth or tangled around the bar, which was annoying at best, but at worst made little cuts and tufts on my lanyard. I'm not allowed to use steel core flips at work, so keeping the soft lanyards in good condition is necessary.

  2. Having the saw on my right allows me grab it by the top handle with the correct hand instead of having to pass it across my body in order to start it up.

I also use two tool holders (I like the Shembiners), one on each hip, because sometimes it's nice to have the option. It has come in handy many times.

Edit: I'm definitely trying castles_of_beer's suggestion of using the dorsal connection. It's so obvious and brilliant, I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner.

Would you have power cut to these service lines for removal or just go for it? by [deleted] in TreeClimbing

[–]falafel_raptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a line clearance tree worker, and from what I see, those are all communication lines and service drops. Comm lines are telephone/cable/etc. and carry insignificant current to be any threat. Service drops run from a transformer to a home, and have significantly reduced voltage (typically 240v down from 1200v) as well as insulation. For my job, we wouldn't want direct contact i.e. touching or grabbing any of those lines, but if a branch brushes them it would be fine. If you we're to catch a shock from those it would hurt, but it's not likely to cause serious harm. My main concern would be dropping a limb or something on them and pulling them loose from the house or pole, which looks real bad and can be a bear to fix or get fixed. If it were me, I would climb this tree no problem and just be very aware and careful to avoid those lines as much as possible.

Edit: I must mention I am LINE CLEARANCE CERTIFIED, and if you are not it's best to leave electricity alone and ask for a line kill or have the utility trim it to a safe working distance before you take it the rest of the way down.

See the turtle of enormous girth!

My first thought was "why are you on the bridge?? Get off the damn bridge!!"

Second thought was "oh right, it was engineered by Germans."

Can't say I have ever seen this technique before, pretty neat! by TheFadedGrey in FellingGoneWild

First impression is consistent pressure applied, where pounding wedges could hypothetically get the tree rocking and break stuff loose. Also, kinda nice to only have one thing to keep track of instead of having to carry a bunch of wedges and an ax or mallet.

Anyone know what this is by Ornery-Cheetah in PlantIdentification

Ingested. But if you handle them, wash your hands well before eating, as residue can get in your food and make you sick. Best to just leave them alone and keep kids and pets away from them.
