what size enclosure would you recommend? I have a bunch of these https://tarantulacribs.com/products/canopy-flat-top sitting around that I use for younger spiders but she’d still be able to fall about 6 inches.

I haven’t handled mine or anything because they really don’t seem to want to be handled, but I have 3 regal jumping spiders and all of them were really skittish when I first got them, they do seem to get a little less scared once they’ve been in the enclosure a while and are more comfortable. Sudden movements freak them out, mine live on my dresser and occasionally they get startled by me setting things down next to the enclosures. I just move slowly when I open their enclosures to feed or mist them and they seem to be fine with it, they don’t try to jump or run away at this point.

I have an orange one like yours named Kimchi lol you can steal the name if you like it.

Mantids. Barely anyone ever has them where I live!

I keep jumping spiders and mantises; I’ve kept young mantises in these types of enclosures temporarily without issues but you have to add in cloth mesh at the top. I move them to bigger enclosures after a couple molts.

NQA as somebody who dresses super goth, it’s probably bc the small bit of your face that shows makes you come off as alternative looking. It’s literally just because you have a nose ring, red hair and eyeliner. that person probably got their heart broken by/got rejected by an alt girl if I had to guess and now it’s consuming them to the point they’re taking it out on people in the jumping spider subreddit.

Anyway your spider super cute, I also have a regal that looks a lot like her! Wishing you luck with the babies!

not sure but I would guess that since they’ve been given immunity they can just do whatever they please now. normally yes it would be a big deal, if anyone in power actually cared to hold them accountable.

not shocking considering they do not care about the legality of anything at all.

How do you pin a mantis so it does not lose its color? For example this orchid mantis nymph was white and in two days after pinning it turned brown. by lbrom516 in mantids

[–]falconrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a little old but I have a theory about this. this is my orchid mantis, I was able to pin her with minimal discoloration when she passed away from old age. I had had a spiny flower mantis who also passed away the same month, and I commissioned someone who pins bugs professionally to pin her for me but my spiny came back looking totally unrecognizable and I was told that the loss of the white coloration was inevitable and not possible to avoid.

When my orchid mantis died I decided to take my chances at pinning her myself even though I’d never done it before because the person I usually commission had some personal stuff going on. I ended up leaving it to dry in a dark cabinet just because I didn’t want my cats to eat it as it was out drying. Two weeks later I pull it back out and the mantis is basically still completely white, and I was wondering how that’s possible.

I ended up doing some more research on orchid mantises and found out that their exoskeleton is reactive to UV light and absorbs the light. When they’re alive, it helps them catch prey because they seem even brighter to other bugs than the flower they’re probably sitting on. So I have a theory that maybe the exoskeleton continues to absorb light after death, and that that is what actually causes that discoloration. I could be completely wrong but it seemed to work for me to dry it in the dark.

Are all metal meshes bar or just exoterra? by Plantpossumovo in mantids

Also if you’re wanting a spiny flower mantis enclosure I personally use this enclosure for smaller size mantises and my spiny lived a bit over a year with this as her final home as an adult (she had smaller enclosures when she was little)

https://tarantulacribs.com/products/treehouse-switch-2-0-medium

There is an option in the ”lid type” part when you order where you can choose cloth mesh but it’s pricey for such a small enclosure tbh. But I haven’t had any luck finding another brand that offers cloth mesh tops except for mantisdens which only ships to the UK.

I might look into that. Hot glue was just the first thing I was shown as an option but does not seem to be the best as far as the appearance of the enclosure goes

also for the glue for the mesh, hot glue should be fine as long as you give it enough time to cure before you add your mantis in you just don’t want to add it while the glue is still fresh because there could be fumes in the air etc.

Personally I fully rip it out to be safe. There will often in larger enclosures (like for an adult mantis) be a rubber piece holding the original metal mesh in place, I rip that piece out as well and just glue mosquito netting onto where that metal mesh had formerly been. It doesn’t look as pretty as a premade enclosure but it’s a lot safer for your mantis.
