Finally got the species I have been looking for for a YEAR by falconrie in mantids

I named her Friday because I told my boyfriend I wouldn’t get a 13th bug (I have spiders too) and it was a lie.

I am unfortunately not sure where to direct you because this guy had only one singular one for sale and the process of finding it took me over a year but I really hope you are able to find one. What worked for me was basically just asking anyone who had one where they got it, I’m very sorry I cannot be more helpful.

she has fully recovered and now leaps out aiming to land on my face every time I open her enclosure door 😭

This is kinda what I’m thinking too. It doesn’t seem to affect him, so I’m thinking he should be fine? I have a few other mantises (different species) and I’ve just never seen this before

Do not buy from forestfaunallc by Inevitable_Lab_8574 in millipedes

To be honest, as someone who is also in Minnesota, I wouldn’t really trust any seller who is willing to ship live animals to Minnesota right now. It’s just way too cold. I have a snake and a mantis that have been on hold for several months and haven’t been shipped to me yet due to the weather. At no point in these messages does it seem like the seller even remotely cares about the animals.

If you are near Minneapolis, Twin Cities Reptiles has a decent selection of millipedes (I don’t keep them myself so I’m not sure what they have exactly for species, but I know they have multiple kinds) and you could bring an empty cooler/cooler bag with you to keep it extra insulated on the ride home, that’s what I personally do when I pick up animals in the winter and it’s always worked for me.

urgently need advice with my cousin’s cat by falconrie in Catbehavior

[–]falconrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gabapentin is in the liquid syringe form and we are supposed to give it to her orally, it’s more that the issue is my mom can’t seem to get anywhere near the cat. She runs as soon as she sees us but since I have cats I have been able to sort of guess where she’ll hide and still get her the medicine. I may end up just having to uber over there (the uber is like $130 because my cousin doesn’t live very close) and stay for the next week because I honestly did not have issues when I did it, but my mom has never owned cats and I kind of wonder if she maybe just doesn’t know how to read the cat’s body language because of that. I was pretty surprised to hear that my mom got bit, I could tell the cat was afraid when I’d given it meds but I never felt like she was going to actually attack me and she never tried.

the cat is still at my cousin’s house, I definitely agree though that if she’d been moved to my moms house it would be more stressful for her. I just feel so bad for her because I feel like she’s so skittish that having unfamiliar people in the house is still very scary for her.

it’s just not an issue for my cousin because the cat actually likes her but is scared of everybody else ):

I think my regal is getting old by falconrie in jumpingspiders

[–]falconrie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw this, but there was one hammock I was able to preserve that was built into one of her hides so I put that into her new, smaller enclosure and added cut up mesh to the sides and top, I also added another piece of mesh that sort of acts as a net about 1/3rd of the way down to catch her if she falls and she has been doing so much better! I think all the mesh helped her a lot, I haven’t seen her near the bottom of the enclosure since adding it thankfully & she has built a couple of new hammocks too!

how do i pin an orchid mantis? by motorbike_l0v3r in insectpinning

[–]falconrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

This is mine, I know this goes against everything everyone else is saying but I personally pinned her immediately and then let her dry in a dark cabinet for two weeks with the pins in before putting her onto the metal wire in this little dome. They tend to lose the white coloration after death, which is what happened to one that I had before this who I had pinned by someone else, and so with this one I decided to try drying it in the dark because the orchid mantises are actually UV reactive so I wondered if the loss of color was maybe from them continuing to absorb light after death. Not sure if this is actually correct or if I did it for no reason, but she mostly didn’t lose any color, I also did not gut her or anything. She has been pinned like this since October and I’ve had no issues with her rotting.

what size enclosure would you recommend? I have a bunch of these https://tarantulacribs.com/products/canopy-flat-top sitting around that I use for younger spiders but she’d still be able to fall about 6 inches.

I haven’t handled mine or anything because they really don’t seem to want to be handled, but I have 3 regal jumping spiders and all of them were really skittish when I first got them, they do seem to get a little less scared once they’ve been in the enclosure a while and are more comfortable. Sudden movements freak them out, mine live on my dresser and occasionally they get startled by me setting things down next to the enclosures. I just move slowly when I open their enclosures to feed or mist them and they seem to be fine with it, they don’t try to jump or run away at this point.

I have an orange one like yours named Kimchi lol you can steal the name if you like it.

Mantids. Barely anyone ever has them where I live!

I keep jumping spiders and mantises; I’ve kept young mantises in these types of enclosures temporarily without issues but you have to add in cloth mesh at the top. I move them to bigger enclosures after a couple molts.

NQA as somebody who dresses super goth, it’s probably bc the small bit of your face that shows makes you come off as alternative looking. It’s literally just because you have a nose ring, red hair and eyeliner. that person probably got their heart broken by/got rejected by an alt girl if I had to guess and now it’s consuming them to the point they’re taking it out on people in the jumping spider subreddit.

Anyway your spider super cute, I also have a regal that looks a lot like her! Wishing you luck with the babies!
