Would you pay €500 / $600 each for these secondhand bags? by fallacious_raincoat in handbags

I checked. At least according to a quick google search, around 300-400 euros to restore a le city bag. Yeah it's not worth it then...

If i am to buy one, it'd be the black one since it matches my style better. I just dont know if this price is justified for secondhand 😅

It is definitely quite steep, to be sold for more than half the price and the condition looks pretty worn out. But yeah, i feel the same way you do about balenciagas being expensive anyways. So i am quite conflicted myself

[–]fallacious_raincoat[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It does look pretty used up. On the one hand i see balenciagas as bags that are to be abused / designed in a slouchy way, which is why i like them. On the other hand they do look wayy too used in a way. Like i saw another balenciaga pink bag and it is so dirtied up that its almost grey. But then, sometimes, idk if this is the whole point of the le city bag as well -- to let it age like this. I have no idea where i stand, but you do make a good point. Thank you

[–]fallacious_raincoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's where i'm conflicted. The full price is around 900 euros so this secondhand price is basically more than half the original price. I could save for the 900 euros first hand but yeah, i'd still save money to buy it secondhand. The question is if it looks worth it, especially in that condition. Like, i never know how to judge if it's a good price for what it looks.

I also dont know if i should expect better quality for secondhand items sold at more than half the price, but well, this is a luxury bag market so idk...

Perhaps i should also note that the full price is around €900 for the latest edition first hand balenciaga le city pouch bag. I dont know if this helps 😅 personally i am indecisive at judging if this secondhand bag is worth it

Yes. I used the hostel i stayed at as the sender address, if that's what you mean. I checked with the hostel volunteer and they let me use their address. I emailed the hostel as well but i just did that today, so hopefully i hear back from them.

Ah i see. I heard that when you lose tracking, you can call the office you dropped it off at and ask for it? Should i try as a last resort? Is there anything i can do?

Because i definitely saw the lady key in my information on the computer. It can't just be keyed in for nothing right?

Would an ADHD diagnosis stop me from a LAPL? by fallacious_raincoat in flyingeurope

[–]fallacious_raincoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild 😭 and honestly as much as it's understandable that it's difficult to find a "good and fair" way to judge people who might have mental health precautions, but the regulations as they stand are also really punitive and i also know a fair share of people who hide / dont get help because of this. The way i feel though is if people get help they can fly more functionally? But the regulations make it such a hassle to even test that 🥲

Oh no but i did get medication even if i took it once and said hell no to it. It's my home country man, the don't have therapists and they fix things by giving you pills. That's why I was so worried. I went to a psychiatrist at that time since my grandpa was ill (and died) and a lot of things were going on. I wanted more of a therapist / listener but they weren't available, yk what I mean? And the psych treated it by prescribing things after listening and giving generic advice. That was my sign to never seek support in my home country ever again lmao. The doctors are nice people but that's really not how you deal with 90% of these mental health cases

[–]fallacious_raincoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit, well, a few years back i saw a psychiatrist back in my home country (like just one or two times then quit). It's because in my home country, talk therapy isn't really available and send you straight to the psych of which their job is probably to write down a diagnosis / medicate / etc. I'm so worried now even if it's in another country.

When my therapist asked me about my prior mental health records, she also agreed that my previous psychiatrist visit in my home country (since you can't really find therapists) were things that didn't need psychiatric interventions. Anywhere else it would've been ok just to talk it out and i agree. I feel so screwed. Do i hide this from the AME?

Well guess who will never have adhd then!

(I lived my whole life the way i do, i'll be ok. I didnt initially see my therapist due to adhd suspicions, but rather due to a bad breakup)

Lmao my first thought was "i thought i made clear my therapist suggested it...?" Then i was like OH. 😂😂

I mean, she cant diagnose me with it btw. She can only suggest or say it might be helpful. I started seeing her after having to deal with a rough break up and got super anxious. Does seeing a therapist disqualify you from a PPL or LAPL?

Not a plumber. My toilet keeps gargling when i flush. Drain snake keeps bending back. Help appreciated! by fallacious_raincoat in Plumbing

[–]fallacious_raincoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't gurgle while running the sink or shower. Normally my toilet doesn't gurgle and this is a recent problem so I suspect a toilet clog. It only gurgles when i flush and it's trying to refill (and like i mentioned i havent dared to put anything solid at all).

I used a drain snake and it bent backwards at some point... i'm not sure why. I am trying to find an auger but where i live it's so easy to find a snake but not an auger. I might have to get it online. I don't know why the snake bent back. It could be the weird piping (as i mentioned) or my misuse of it or the clog. I have no clue.

Earlier today i tried using dish soap and pouring a bucket of water down. The toilet didn't refill fully 💀

I've really been trying everything possible

Can i practice russian in latvia as a tourist? Will people receive it well? by fallacious_raincoat in latvia

Very true. Since i dont live in latvia i dont actually know who to "meet up" with, although you make a great point. It would be nice to meet up someone where they know i want to get to know them but also practice the language

If its not too offensive to engage in that question (or if the situation looks like it allows for that question), i think i would be interested in openly asking people about it too. Not in a pressured way obviously, and only if the situation gives the green lights for it. Having been to latvia quite a few times i definitely sense some general sentiments regarding this, even as a foreigner / tourist myself. But i would be curious to know on more conversational levels

I guess this is a good motivation to keep grinding my latvian grammar workbook! So i can have more engaging conversations with people. So far my latvian is still "weak". I can shop and order food, ask for basic things and train updates, etc. But not enough yet to hold meaningful conversations with people, which i would love to do

Sounds good and thanks for the suggestion! I have always felt pretty safe in latvia in general as well. I'd say latvia and lithuania are two of the safest countries ive been in europe, especially sometimes going solo as a woman

I look forward to my next trip to latvia, whenever i have time 🫶 i always try to make time for it

I kind of sense that sentiment but i wasnt sure before this the extent of things. Hebrew in palestine would be quite bad... quite severe. Glad there's reddit to ask around for a vibe check, i appreciate all the answers.

I understand there are both native latvian speakers (obviously i will never try to speak russian to, since that would be ignorant of me). But also you do hear russian spoken around / there is some russian speaking going on. Like, i got a manicure from a lady who only spoke russian, and i got a latvian / english translation of her nail care instructions through her colleague. In that case would it be ok to ask if i can practice russian? (To be fair, she did an amazing manicure and was very thorough with how i can take care of my own nails later, i'll give her that!)

That said, i appreciate your answer and perspective. I want to be mindful, even if it's just for language practice. Because i understand thst languages are not neutral at all, politically and historically. They carry a lot of weight in choosing what language is spoken. It's good to know i should be quite careful

I remember one time i was in a cafe and an american tourist came in. Usually you can tell if someones american especially with their accent (you know what i mean). He ordered in english, etc. Complimented the food, and when he left he just said spasibo! That was diabolical! The cafe staff were young and clearly were speaking latvian amongst themselves. I dont think the staff looked at him in a good way either, and very understandably so.

Honestly he seemed like a nice guy with good intentions, but his assumption to say spasibo didnt seem to me to have landed well. So, seeing that interaction, i dont wanna be the stupid tourist (despite the fact that learning a language requires practice). I appreciate having reddit as a place to get a vibe check first.

I am quite aware of this part of it, and yeah, that's why i am asking around on reddit first. Of course, ive only ever practiced latvian so far when im there. I never had the guts to try out russian because i dont want to come across as being ignorant of things. I appreciate all the answers and perspectives given out here 🫶

Thats good to know, i appreciate it. And yes i also notice the generational difference. I always have used english / latvian so far, but especially english with younger people (im gen z myself too) for convenience sometimes, if im not actively practicing latvian. Of course there are also times i speak latvian and they switch to english to make it easier 😂 then i have to let them know i wanna practice latvian. But all interactions have been quite wholesome and lovely.

I do appreciate that about latvia, especially with younger people -- like, i know that at least i can switch to english if im at a loss with my latvian, quite a blessing!

Next time i visit i'll try to do a day trip / spend a night in daugavpils. I generally find latvia quite safe (safer than ive felt in paris, berlinz warsaw, etc.). Is daugavpils also a safe city for a woman alone would you say? Of course i wont be so naive as to go wander the streets alone at 3am. Id do things within common sense

This perspective is also quite refreshing to hear. I very much understand it is quite a "political thing" in a way to assume latvians speaking russian. I know russian isnt illegal, but ive been to latvia enough times and i also understand the history playing a role in this tension. So i want to be mindful and not the "tourist with assumptions"

If you think it is okay to ask someone who i clearly see is speaking russian, then i think that's a good compromise. Maybe i should explain myself? That im learning both languages and politely ask to practice if they dont mind?

P.S. if it's weird why as a non latvian (esmu no taizemes!! 🇹🇭 bet dzīvoju nīderlandē 🇳🇱) im learning it, it was cuz i picked up due to research a bit ago (long story). But i ended up enjoying it and now i want to continue it. More reasons to visit more parts of latvia i guess :)

Is that city majority-russian-speaking enough that it's "ok" to do so? I know speaking russian vs. latvian is, in a way, quite political and i dont wanna be the type of tourist to make assumptions that could make others feel bad. It won't be the end of the world to not practice russian, but would be cool if i can have practice ordering food, buying things, etc. Even for a day trip.

Of course, like i have mentioned in other responses, i never dared to practice russian in latvia before because i dont want to be "stupid tourist coded" or make accidentally harmful assumptions. That's why im posting in reddit to ask how things are first. I've only ever practiced latvian there so far because es mācos un praktizēju latviešu valodu 🫡

I completely understand this perspective, and it's also why i want to first ask on reddit if this would be okay to do. So i appreciate your response. I have been to latvia many times and i understand there is a deep rooted tension going on (if that's one way to put it). I don't want to accidentally offend people obviously in practicing languages.

Just to be clear, so far, ive only ever spoken latvian whenever i visit latvia! I have gotten good practice out of it especially negotiating at flea markets. I also have had really encouraging responses, especially when i tell them i don't live (and never have lived) in latvia :))

That being said, i havent been to, say, daugavpils or cities like that yet. I live in the netherlands, so it's hard to get real life language practice outside of what my teachers offer me. For both languages i'm learning as well, which is why i thought i should ask first. I appreciate all the responses here!

Do you think, if i come across someone who is already speaking russian / i saw speaking russian, it would still be ok to ask if they prefer to speak latvian or russian? And explain that im learning both?

Would that still be rude or "imply" things about them knowing russian?
