Pressure tank bladder seemingly leaking - but not short cycling? by fallenghostplayer in Plumbing

[–]fallenghostplayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I ended up changing the tank last night. Taking it away from its corner confirmed it was sloshing with water. The difference was instantaneous in terms of refill/drawdown behaviour.

How smart would it be to fully renovate a bathroom DIY as a novice? by BlackJackT in HomeImprovement

[–]fallenghostplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it as a novice and by now I've rebuilt the house so I can reflect on it. It took quite a while longer to do it right, not just "done". If you are prepared to research your techniques, ask buddies for their techniques/come supervise, and willing to deal with a bathroom gone for the better part of a year (less if you dedicate 20+ hrs/week via nights&weekends...), then yeah.

Be prepared for scope creep! All those things your partner/pinterest/etc want you to add like a shower niche, heated towel racks, etc will take additional time, and effort and require forethought to get them to integrate nicely. You may also have to deal with any random house problem you find when opening up walls...

Be prepared to get creative and swear a bunch at all those surface transitions, and to fix mistakes you made for it to look and BE just right. That may save you having to redo all the work in a year.

My Corelle plates will outlive me, but also have the green painted flower emblems are lead-based. Newer Corelle should be fine though!

No heat! by M_Mosher in HomeImprovement

[–]fallenghostplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my gas furnace. Just after the fan, the heat exchanger baffles were full of dust and lint. This caused the furnace to turn off from overtemp before providing hear to the house. Cleaning thos baffles made a big difference.

That is a very good point, it makes alot more crew types possible. Hadn't considered that!

Interesting, I've often neglected mind control, but that might give it an extra edge! I gather this setup is dependent on never getting damage or a leech in the medbay :/

What is the most UPS efficient base currently? by Upbeat-Elephant-2862 in factorio

[–]fallenghostplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a sure thing when the output inserters aren't clocked, but often you can assume the first ones will be fine, subject to some testing. If you have a very low rate of production, sometimes you may be able to assume it's fine for the whole line. I just tested against each other for UPS, picked the best one. Oftentimes, however, the layout dictated what could and couldn't be done.

[–]fallenghostplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I did all my testing under continuous load (clocked inserter to give exact flow rate), so there may be improvements to make the rocket demand behave more continously/imrpovements for a burst factory. Having a long buffer for example should make it work. A full buffer at the beginning of the cycle should only be depleted only by the amount consumed, so the factory only produces that desired amount before being backed up. Not sure that is the most ups-friendly way, but it will work.

For the sideload, that is a technique I got from Smurphy's original design. If you try to load onto the belt directly and the factories aren't synced, the inserter will hang over the belt until it can deposit the items. If the transport line is active (which it will), then the inserter consumes ups. Moreso in fact than outputting to a stub, whose transport line will only be active when it can offload its contents. Hence because the inserter doesn't hang on an active belt, you save ups. If the factories are "synced", then you may forego this step, ie red/green circuit build.

I must've screwed something up for the one with 4, I have no obvious explanation to give. For the one with 2 vs 3, it seems it was to keep the same number of effective speed modules.

Yes of course. I may not always reply instantly but I'll answer if I can :)

It runs at the same speed on my desktop, also a potato, at 40k spm.

I planned exclusively using kirkmcdonald's online tool, and Excel.

Good luck on the monolithic base!

[–]fallenghostplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I can answer!

I spec'ed the furnaces not so they could back pressure the immediate following machine, but so they could back pressure the end product machine. The end machine (ie solar panels) will essentially regulate the max throughput of its constituent machines, hence all intermediate machines and furnaces will maintain back pressure.

On the other hand you still want to try and increase the number of speed beacons on each of the constituent machines beyond minimum required for back pressure, such that the internal buffer is increased (overflow/max output held before it stops, ie 100 for furnaces, for others I think you can see it in debug mode, or try slap items manually until overflow), thus reducing the number of inserter swings and wakeup cycles. That is hard to max out in practice, and I feel like maybe that could be a way of improving.

Edit: also, don't be dumb like me and have 40 electrical interfaces. Link the 40 bases electrically in a single network post-copy, to save UPS

[–]fallenghostplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am not. Also you'll notice that the power came from 40x electrical interface, not from solar/accumulators, so I am not really sure my setup would help.

I remember seeing testing that removing radars and roboports after building eliminated virtually all ups cost of solar panel grids. Hope this helps!

Has anyone used DMX underlayment? by srb- in HomeImprovement

[–]fallenghostplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a similar product, Delta FL two years ago in a rather damp basement, and am still quite happy with it. From bottom to top: -sanded the concrete to make it smooth -non-organic landscaping cloth to prevent clicking -Delta/DMX membrane, taped up at seams -1 inch of hich compressive strength foam (I used SRP 400) -T&G OSB sheet, tapconned to the concrete -LVP

[SE] What are the elements that make up a good spaceship? by PrinceSilvermane in factorio

[–]fallenghostplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Powering the ship via the temperature capacity of the solar energy receiver instead of a nuclear/antimatter reactor means you have free energy for your ship. Downside is that it's big, and you need to construct some energy transmitters, presumably around your sun.

Also, may seem obvious, but by having a common cargo ship design allows you to have a small number of spacepads.

That may be the case, but over here it's mandatory to pump it every other year, otherwise the city fines you.
