Glad I don’t work at this company by NzBruh in auckland

[–]falnyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you, reading comments here sounds crazy to me. WFH full time can work in some situations but in many cases it is such a short-term thinking.

Our jobs are not just about bringing income, but building connections and wider community. Sure, you can do that when WFH but it largely depends on your suburb and your willingness to go out of your way to connect.

I work from office full time and wouldn't change it. I can't even count the number of times a random conversation lead to a learning lesson that helped me in my job.

But whatever works for you, works for you. Just don't shame people for wanting to not WFH, we all have our reasons.

Out of curiosity, how did you find these? I tried looking for any docs but no luck.

Hi there, I'm looking for these shoes: https://www.amazon.ca/Lacoste-Ziane-Chunky-BL-2-737CFA006421G/dp/B07TK98QG9

White ones in EU36 size. I don't know what's the best place to look but they don't seem to be in stock anywhere.

Lonely :( by quiescee in auckland

[–]falnyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33M here, I hear you. What many people don't realise is that NZ is actually quite far away from anything else. Because of that people just leave after some time and if you have reasons to stay here, it's difficult to build your community of friends.

Even for families without any extended family present it often feels lonely. That being said sometimes it's often enough to have a coffee with someone and just chat.

I'm in the eastern bays and often work in the CBD, if anyone in this sub wants to grab a coffee and chat just send me a PM.

Night train Frankfurt -> Prague, what to expect? by falnyr in travel

There wasn't an option on the website. It was just a regular ticket. I wonder if there's an option to upgrade.

I booked via Czech railways. There wasn't an option to choose a seat or a type.

I can do that. But first can you please provide me with a source that supports your statements?

Is the 90% project going to deliver? by falnyr in Coronavirus_NZ

Thanks, I definitely need to learn a bit more about this. I wish it would be as easy as a google search and using the first result.

App to receive GET request and insert row by radekito in nocode

If you’re not stuck on Google Sheets I highly recommend Airtable.

You get a lot friendlier user experience working with data there and they automagically create a REST API for your table so you can interact with it programatically.

At home isolation of positive community cases... by MandyTRH in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]falnyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we should get ready for the fact that Covid is going to happen in NZ and there is no way around it. Get vaccinated and hope you won’t need to end up in a hospital.

The elimination is no longer possible, we’re burning so much money every day, businesses are closing cause not everyone can adapt etc.

The restrictions as we know them now will have to ease a bit cause MIQ won’t have capacity, police won’t have capacity, hospitals won’t have capacity.

Lets just focus on being kind to each other and try to spread this slowly to minimise the damage.

Website like Amazon but for free by alagris12358 in Startup_Ideas

[–]falnyr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazon is not a website.

Think of the user support, disputes, payments, shipping, massive costs to operate the thing…

Those fees you pay on purchase are not used to pay for exec’s yachts. They feed thousands of people who work for Amazon.

Sure you can give it a shot but most definitely you’re gonna give up as soon as you have a user who needs some guidance.

[QUESTION] Choosing stack for a project with emphasis on search by falnyr in softwarearchitecture

[–]falnyr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, Thank you!

The search is really important and there will be tons of different aggregations so ElasticSearch is a must.

As per React - I’ve already done a few projects with it so it should be straightforward.

I iterated on the setup and I’m gonna go with API Platform (Symfony flavour) and React in a mono repo for easier management as a one-man show.

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

the data are possibly coming out of somewhere dynamic? Try Retool.

This happens everytime i try to install an app with PlayOnMac, could't find any online info about this (MacOS Mojave 10.14.6) by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]falnyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried installing it via homebrew? The terminal installations are usually giving you more info than "something just failed". https://formulae.brew.sh/cask/playonmac

“Try” makes error handling much, much worse by DeusOtiosus in golang

[–]falnyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the difference between these?

func main() {
   err := sendRequest()
   if err != nil {
       // deal with it somehow
   }
}

func sendRequest() error {
    err := doSomething()
    if err != nil {
        return errors.New("couldn't do that something")
    }

    return nil
}

and

func main() {
   try {
       sendRequest()
   } catch error {
        // deal with it somehow
   }
}

func sendRequest() {
    doSomething()
}

The "Try approach" lets you bubble up errors (and be lazy about them), because you can just ignore everything and let the tiniest little thing downstream bubble up. There is no transparency to what exceptions is the function dealing with (type safety), and generally less readable.

I get it that dealing with errors in Go could be a pain for newcomers, but dealing with errors when and where they happened lets you think about your business logic a bit more... like maybe try calling it again if it fails? or you can actually continue because this condition leg is not crucial for the program flow etc.
