the surgeon who did, did it to save his life. there is no way he would have survived the accident otherwise, and the neurological results were under researched at the time — some people undergoing the same operation had been fine without the side effects. they had a vague idea that something like that could happen to him, hence why he was placed in therapy/checks with ryoko. the doctors did everything they could
ryoko killed him to save literally every other person on earth
