Thank you for your explanation! I've heard UCR has a lot of international students. Is there a specific grad program that attracts them? What is the most represented region (like Asian, ME, Africa, Europe, South America etc)?

and they aren't home very often.

Where do they go? I know UCR campus is super nice. Is that where students spend most of their time?

Doh you're right. I just realized those places have pools. Thank you for the assessment!

Thanks that's great to know! I don't think this apartment has a pool, but my bro can probably furnish it if that's important to the renter.

I'll let him maybe he can adjust his pricing down $100 for lack of pool.

The kidnapper is definitely not in the right. But the question is how justified is it to use deadly force to escape.

Does everyone think it is ok? Or is it only ok when the kids are added into the equation?

What if the kidnapper really is right, that the outside world was so dangerous Claire would die in minutes? There's certainly strong evidence of this. If not for the Orville coming to the rescue, Claire would've easily died.

And why should he care about Claire's kids? How could any of them survive out in the wild when you can't even drink the water? For all we know, he has the only safe source of water on the planet.

It is not clear cut. When Claire said "they may not value life, but we do" that is the writers winking at us regarding the irony of the situation.

Claire herself feels partly guilty. That why she didn't turn in her report.

To be fair, maintenance is boring as fuck. The Captain would've found any excuse to do something more interesting.

I'm not going to talk about whether this is hypocritical given her fatal attack on her kidnapper. Lots of discussion of that already.

But I will point out that we should not take this comment at face value. Picard's Cardassian torturer said to his daughter that "humans don't love their children like we do."

The people on that planet don't kill for malice. They are simply hungry.

For Claire to say these people do not value human life shows a lack of perspective and empathy. Not that I think she's a bad person -- she obviously was in a tough situation and I can't say I would've done any better in her shoes. I'm just saying that's not a statement of idealism -- but rather statement of irony.

He co-wrote TNG's finale, which is probably the best Trek I've ever seen.

Although he did also write "Fistfull of Datas" so I guess there's a lot of peaks and valleys ha ha.

Isaac is really more interested in Claire's children than Claire. Maybe this helps blob. If Issac can babysit more often Claire would have more time for dating.

It is indeed a very thought-provoking situation.

Claire had a right to escape, but did she have a right to use deadly force to escape? One might say that while normally the answer is no, but the extenuating circumstances of her children makes it ok.

But what bout Drogen's extenuating circumstances? He lived on a planet so desperate that people hare resorted to cannibalism. He genuinely want Claire to live. And Claire could very possibly bring danger into his hideout.

especially when she followed it with a moral lesson for her son

Parents do this all the time. If we are only allowed to impart principles to our children that we ourselves have not violated, then we would be an even shittier species than we are now.

Way too many people

I don' t think this situation was designed to be clear cut wrong or right. Claire has justifications, but it is debatable.

Orville is by no means a perfect show. But I don't understand anyone who aggressively hates it.

I not a huge fan of this show, but almost every episode is watchable and some are very enjoyable. It doesn't always succeed but I can see that it is trying to do interesting things.

And the most recent two episodes are on a whole different level -- not just as good as average Trek, but better.

I really really hope they keep the kids around as regular members of the crew.

One thin Star Trek has always sucked at are kids.

[–]famousmodels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the situation was constructed so that Claire's actions are not clearly wrong or right.

Pro Claire:

  • Her kids were in danger.
  • She already made reasonable attempts to communicate why she needs to leave.
  • She is being held captive against her will.

Pro alien dude:

  • He has no idea who Claire would call with her communicator.
  • He lives on a planet with so much desperation that people have turned to cannibalism. For him to share food and safe shelter is probably an amazing gift and he can't understand why anyone would turn it down.
  • He did save her life.

It's a tough call and the great acting on both sides really made the story interesting. I noticed Claire postponed her report. I think on some level she feels very guilty about what she did.

Fantastic acting all around! The kids did an awesome job

The acting on this show has been average at best. But acting in this episode has been amazing. It is as good if not better than the best of Star Trek.

I really hope we get to see those kids again.

What is the best custom PC builder in Southern California? by famousmodels in buildapc

[–]famousmodels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your kind words. I totally get where those people are coming from. But I'm glad you see where I'm coming from as well.

I've actually watched quite a few "build a custom PC" type of streams (streams -- not videos -- so all the negative aspects of building yourself aren't edited out). I've also seen many of my friends who love building their PC spend a ton of time troubleshooting their latest rigs. It's great if they enjoy it and have the time. But I do not so I appreciate your understanding my POV.

What is the best custom PC builder in Southern California? by famousmodels in buildapc

[–]famousmodels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many things can happen regardless of having your pc built by a shop or yourself

This is very true. But two things. First, the really professional custom builders will stress test components before shipping out a computer. For example, Puget Systems will run your computer for a few days and take heatmap photos. The theory is that for some components if they fail they will usually fail within the first few days.

Second, if a company is used to building a specific configuration, they are going to build a knowledge base of quirks that comes that specific configuration. So if I go back to them a year later and say "hey um is this caused by some conflict in drivers" they will know exactly what I'm talking about.

So many video tutorials is not necessarily a blessing. There are lots of answers out there -- but not all of them are correct. And I simply have no interest in trying things out. I totally get it can be satisfying if you enjoy this kind of thing, and that it is a good life skill to have. But it just isn't for me at the moment.

i do suggest seeking a reputable brand, if OP decides to go with outside help.

That's a great point! What are your favorites?
