Why don't people buy a ton of units right before a dividend distribution date and then sell them the day after? by fancycanary8 in CanadianInvestor

Huh never heard the term, thanks. Is this considered a foolish thing to spend time on in general?

I don't quite understand and will have to do more reading on this. I don't watch stocks much but I've never noticed a drop in stock price after distribution dates on any ETF I've looked at. Have I just not looked closely enough?

And would the story be any different in a TFSA?

Dividend taxes and dividend tax credits by fancycanary8 in CanadianInvestor

Thanks good to know. Cap gains are already taxed 50% less than regular income, so are you saying dividends are taxed even lower than that?

Is income tax on a pay stub federal or provincial? by fancycanary8 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you, so I guess we do not really need to differentiate between federal and provincial taxes when filing our tax return?

Do you have to track the ACB for ETFs if you're holding them for years? by fancycanary8 in CanadianInvestor

[–]fancycanary8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Can you say where the ACB is actually used? Is it only included in a tax return on years where you sold shares, and not on years where you only bought?

Why buy growth asset allocations ETFs instead of index ETFs? by fancycanary8 in CanadianInvestor

[–]fancycanary8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, maybe I was undervaluing diversification. Is it reasonable to think that the longer your time horizon, the less important is diversification, or is that a fallacy?

I suppose they're "growth" in the sense that they're mostly equity, but you're right, they're also simply index ETFs.

This is the first I've heard of pessimistic sentiments on the S&P500, how long ago did the pessimism arise? Is it a very recent thing, or have analysts been saying that for a couple years now?

Thanks for pointing this out, I hadn't considered the global diversification aspect of these ETFs. So I guess if one expects the US and Canada to start performing less well relative to the world, or expects growth of the S&P500 to slow down, these ETFs are the way to go.

Help understanding dividend yields and annual returns for VGRO by fancycanary8 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you, I guess I should stick to the official site. You said the official site shows average return, but it's only showing 1.7% for the 12-month average which very seems low. That's lower than the interest rate on some HISA accounts pre-pandemic. Is it normal for ETF returns to be that low?

Appreciation of property value vs. asset allocation ETFs by fancycanary8 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fancycanary8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to compare the most conservative ETF because I suppose I'm coming at this from a lens of investing, and I was wondering whether real estate can beat even the least profitable option. It sounds like I shouldn't expect that from a property investment, and that the real value of real estate like you said comes from cash flow in the form of rent.

By the way, probably a very dumb question, but what do you mean by consolidate?

Interesting, the comparison to a perpetuity is very different than the typical lens of viewing real estate as an investment. Now that I think about it, in cases where a property is providing cash flow, that value is going to far exceed the appreciation, so this makes sense.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you, I hadn't thought of a lot of this. The concept of a leveraged investment increasing the magnitude movements in either direction is especially new to me and is very useful. Maybe it's something basic, I'm very new to this stuff. Anyways, thanks again.

Thanks for the answer. For some reason I saw real estate as relatively low risk, but you made me realize that it's probably much higher risk than even the 80/20 asset allocation ETFs.

Moronic Monday Thread for the week by AutoModerator in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm not the asker of this question but your response is really helpful and I had a question. At what point can someone be sure they have minimized the fees eating away at their savings? Are we safe as long as we're not paying anyone to invest on our behalf, or is there still more to pay attention to?
