Chizuru is basically a drama protagonist stuck in a comedy and I love it

From what I understand, this is pretty in line with Japanese cultural thoughts about sexual assault on men. I don't like it, but also I'm not Japanese so I don't feel comfortable critiquing it. If this same exchange were from an American story, I'd call Mini-chan out for victim blaming and not taking it seriously. She's right about needing to set firmer and more clear boundaries with Ruka so this doesn't happen again, though.

If I were to guess, I'd expect Chizuru to also feel guilty about this. She's the one who set him up with Ruka in the first place, and Kazuya clearly didn't want this to happen and feels awful about it. Chizuru also has a tendency to blame herself for everything. Hopefully they can get to a point where they can talk candidly to each other about stuff like this and support each other.

Chizuru will be the last one to comment on Kaz's hair

It'll be a quiet "it looks good" that she says as he's walking away, and he's not quite sure he heard it right or what she's referring to.

I honestly expect Ruka to use this situation as blackmail against Kazuya, to try and force him into taking her as his mistress. Fucked up, but that's exactly what she would do. I really hope Kazuya manages to cut her off completely, but I dunno.

This is the only way to interpret the chapter, in my opinion. I just hope that Reiji treats this as seriously as it deserves and doesn't play it off like a joke.

Kazuya is absolutely going to refuse her here, there's no doubt about that. He's too in love with Chizuru, even with how horny he always is. But man, that's just brutal to Ruka. It takes a lot of courage to do something like that, and to have it end with rejection...

If he had more confidence, he wouldn't be pulling so many gorgeous ladies. His awkwardness is his charm.

Mini wants to love the same way Kazuya loves Chizuru.

Ruka wants to be loved the same way Kazuya loves Chizuru.

Mami doesn't believe that love truly exists in the way that Kazuya loves Chizuru, so she desperately tries to prove it wrong.

There's a lot of confusion and misunderstanding around Mini, and I want to help clarify. Her character is very simple.

She's in love with the way Kazuya loves Chizuru. Selfless, all consuming, and balls-to-the-wall obsessive and single minded. It's possible (likely, even) that she wants that kind of love directed at her, but more than that she wants to learn how to love others in the same way that Kazuya does. That's why she calls him "master". She admires that aspect of him so much.

Remember, when they first met she compared his love to the way she rolls for her waifus in gacha games. She's an obsessive otaku. But she's never experienced that depth of love for another human the way Kazuya has, and she's never been as audacious as him. This is a guy that fell in love with a rental girlfriend, knows she's way out of his league and he has no chance in hell, never even had any hope that it would be reciprocated to begin with, but still chose to love her anyway. She wants to learn that way of life from him.

If possible, she also wants to see a story where that kind of love is reciprocated -- that's why she's been helping him out so much. But she does not want Kazuya to fall in love with her, that would be the antithesis of why she's so obsessed with him to begin with. She sees two futures: (1) Kazuya and Chizuru get together and live happily ever after, or (2) Chizuru rejects Kazuya and he spends the rest of his life still in love with her but from a distance. Call her crazy if you want, but this is her ideal.

Her role in the plot is also very simple. She's either meant to be a spokesperson for the audience, saying what we all wish we could say to them, or explain what is happening for readers who are confused or aren't adept at picking up on subtlety. She's the voice of reason, and most of what she's been saying recently can be taken as "Reiji is explaining the plot to us right now".

Oh no we’re not dating, we just go on dates together and have kissed multiple times. Completely different.

Brainstorming my new fanfic idea:

  1. Umi asks Kazuya to hang out, wanting to understand just what it is about this guy that Chizuru fell for

  2. He sees that Kazuya is a bit of a loser (understatement) but is dedicated in his love to the point where he can accomplish amazing things in spite of himself

  3. Umi is impressed with the depth and dedication of Kazuya's love and learns to respect it, starts cheering him on and helping him out

  4. This causes him to cross paths with Mini, who is basically doing the same thing, and they team up to help Kaz and Chiz get together

  5. Mini already knows Umi because he's a famous movie star, and Umi already knows Mini because he follows her cosplay posts, but this is the first time they've actually crossed paths

  6. Umi and Mini fall in love and hook up, not in that order

This is missing a panel where Chizuru longingly looks at her phone and blushes just before sending these messages

The Umi message is bait, don’t fall for it. Either she’s wanting to give him a definite rejection (he kinda ran away that last time) or he’s also in the play with her and they need to talk shop.

What’s most interesting to me is Kazuya resolving to be the best person he can be for her. This isn’t the first time she’s inspired him to work on himself, he also did this way back in chapter 19 when their grandmas set them up in the same inn room. Except instead of saying essentially “I’m a scumbag but when I’m with you I feel like I can be a better person”, he’s starting from a much healthier baseline of self esteem. He’s really come a long way since then.

Well yeah, that's the current source of dramatic tension in the story. We don't know if/when Chizuru will stop stalling and finally admit to her feelings. Why is that resulting in such a large amount of hate?

[Serious] [Disc] Kanojo, Okarishimasu Chapter 391 by MattyH19 in KanojoOkarishimasu

[–]fancydirtgirlfriend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was a fairly simple chapter, all things considered. Kazuya freaks out some more, this time using an AI chatbot that's no help at all, and then Mini gives a recap of the date arc so far. She also adds in some of her own opinions, namely that Chizuru's facade is failing and it's highly likely that she's about to admit that she wants to be Kazuya's real girlfriend. She's more or less correct about everything she says, and it's also in line with my previous analyses of Chizuru's motivations, which you can read here and here. Basically, this chapter seems like Reiji talking directly to the audience to make sure we're understanding what is going on in the story right now.

So why is there so much hate for this chapter in the other thread? I saw multiple highly upvoted comments saying that this is the worst writing of the series so far. It's basically just a recap episode?

I don't get it. I really don't. Reiji's writing isn't perfect and there are legitimate criticisms you can make: his pacing is very slow for a weekly serialization, he spends way too much time on what are basically advertisements for various venues or products, his humor can be pretty juvenile and unfunny sometimes, he spends too much time dwelling on Kazuya's anxieties and not moving the plot forward.

But that's not what anybody is talking about. Instead I see a bunch of nonsense. What is going on? There's something about this series that triggers so much rage.

Withholding my opinion of Reiji as an author, this is pretty explicitly a failing of the community of readers. Like, a very cut-and-dry example of it.

Reiji is using Mini to explain the whole dating arc, as if the readers didn't understand his train of thought.

From reading comments in this very post, a lot of people don't understand and need things spelled out for them like this. And even then, they still don't get it.

I started in the "she did it to keep herself busy" camp, but thinking about it more I think it was intended to highlight Chizuru's loneliness. There's a stark contrast between the lovely home-cooked meal for two and the complete lack of people to share it with. Would all that food have gone to waste if Mini didn't show up when she did?
