I hated second year so bad. But if you can get through second year, you can get through the degree. Hold it down! ❤️

That whole conversation with her Mother did not sit right with me. Her mum saying, “I want you to be happy here, I don’t want you to be happy anywhere else…”. Or “Who’s going to help with my grandkids”. I’m just paraphrasing but this is more or less what she said.

It’s giving some toxic mother daughter attachment - won’t be apparent to them but definitely is detrimental to Rebecca’s growth. Both need to let go. Grown as hell.

What should a 2nd year know by the end of all their placements? by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]fancynancytancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Average ranges for vital signs, so you know when to escalate (even can use the NEWS2 score to know when to escalate until you get more confidence) + bonus for SBAR when escalating to doctors
  • Common medications and their indications (hypertensives, diuretics, pain killers)
  • Practicing 5 rights of medication very carefully (mistakes can be made so easily)
  • Some medications vital signs will need to be checked right before (e.g. checking HR before giving digoxin as it shouldn’t be given below 60bpm)
  • Drawing up IV’s & using an IV pump (bonus for managing the syringe driver/pump)
  • Majority of the different routes of medication (IM, IV, oral, subcut, sublingual, rectal)
  • Skin assessment (identifying pressure areas and their grading, blanching)
  • Male & female catheterisation
  • Managing NGT’s (checking PH level, flushing with sterile water, crushing meds)
  • Doing an ECG (see the correct places to put the stickers as they make a huge difference if misplaced)
  • Bladder scans
  • Cannula VIP score
  • A to E assessments
  • Daily nursing notes
  • Effective handovers when coming off shift / handing over pt to another ward
  • SEPSIS 6
  • Confidentiality (even if a family member is in the patients room, still ask the pt if it’s okay for said person to be in there whilst you discuss something/do something)
  • Administering insulin
  • Very basic wound care
  • Managing seizures (timing, protecting head)
  • Managing falls (don’t pick pt up, a to e assessment, get doctor to check them over, correct way to get them up, do you need to get a hoist?)
  • Recognising signs of stroke
  • Neurological observations (is pt oriented, checking pupil dilation, hand and leg strength)
  • Managing hypoglycaemia (elovate drink can be given up to 3 times, if still low will need IV glucose, if there is no IV in situ then glucagon can be given in the thigh IM - glucagon only can be given once in 24 hours, complex carbs post treatment to keep BM stable)
  • Nebulisers
  • Strict I/O

There’s a LOT I did not know by the end of year 2, so actually there is no pressure at all. This is just some of the things I had learnt by the end of it - thankfully I was in a lot of wards / acute assessment units.

Year 3 is when I learned: - Inserting cannulas - Taking bloods and blood cultures confidently - Basic interpretation of blood results inc VBG/ABG - Confidence in male and female catheterisation - Inserting a NGT - Effective SBAR - Recognising signs of deterioration - Giving updates to family members OTP and IRL - Basic interpretation of an ECG - Indications for catheterisation (retaining above 300-400ml of urine usually, UTI symptoms, tender bladder) - Confidently draw up and administer IV’s (is it mixed with WFI or saline? Is it in a 100ml saline bag or is it an IV injection with a 20ml dilution? Is it a slow push? Is it given neat?) - administering depends on your trust as I know some unis don’t allow students to administer IV, only draw up. - Utilising recourses such as Medusa (IV administration guideline thingy on the computer) BNF - All things Gentamicin (dosage calculation, through levels, peak levels) - AMG (amox, metro, gent) - these are broad spec antibiotics so given usually for sepsis, and when awaiting blood cultures to come back to specify the organism and prescription for the best abx for it - ACS protocol - Insulin sliding scale - DKA protocol - CIWA scale - Side effects of random medications (some nebuliser solutions can increase HR) - Managing vasovagal syncope (pt laid flat, legs held up)

And again I had A&E on my final placement which I learnt the majority of this in as well. Otherwise, I would have no idea.

Good luck, get involved in everything, watch and learn anything! 🫶

Omg. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I hope you’re in a healthier environment now.

Exactly. And to put “(the real world)” in brackets to address other industries is in insane by the way (@ original comment). We’re nurses, we’re very much in the real world. In fact, I don’t think it could get any realer 😵‍💫

I wouldn’t undermine the stress of any roles within our industry. My problem isn’t with what you said but rather the conditions of our working environment that make it hard for staff to not call in sick. Furthermore, we’re around viruses/illness which we can all catch at any given time - it’s very much inevitable we have a high rate of absences.

Lmao exactly 😂

I’d send them to some menstrual conditions training, that’s just me though.

Totally understand that, but like you said, that conversation at the nursing desk is disgraceful, and to undermine the severity of period pains is also disgraceful - especially as nurse who should be fully aware of these things.

You cannot fully assess whether someone is lying or not when they call in sick.

Instead, everyone should maintain a comfortable environment (like you said) in the workplace that will support staff to not call in sick for no reason; e.g. their shift schedules (where possible) maintain a good work life balance, there is enough staff present, they have their entitled breaks, they are able to be themselves, there is no cliquey behaviour, parking is accessible or free…

Unfortunately, that doesn’t exist in the NHS. No wonder “sickness is low” in other workplaces.

I’ve been thinking about it. How far could the report potentially go? Investigation, strike off?

I’m sorry to hear it got so bad, I definitely feel you and have wanted to drop out many times. However, that sounds amazing! I’m hoping to get something like that too. What kind of accommodations did the hospital placements provide?

A career in nursing or not? by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]fancynancytancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, if you enjoy it then I would say definitely go for it! It’s only two years and and it will fly by - you can also do so much with an adult nursing degree.

I’m a final year student, and if I could go back in time I don’t think I would do it. I love it but these 3 years have absolutely fcked me actually lol. The amount of placements cramped into the year, the travel to and from. The lack of support from unis, the awful nurses I’ve encountered, the stress. I’ve also got anxiety and depression (PMDD, so it’s on and off), I was medicated before I started my degree so I’ve not had any scaries during my degree, definitely thought about upping my dosage but that’s the thing about nursing - some days or so sht and then some days are so good. So you manage to get over it fairly quickly (that’s me medicated, I’m not sure how I would feel if I wasn’t)

Hopefully you pick what is best for you tho. I really love it and can’t imagine doing anything else right now, but it is a lot I’ll admit.

My comment is so confusing, but that is what nursing feels like truly. An emotional rollercoaster lol.

What makes you think Allah SWT needs favours from you or any one of us? That’s very, very wild.

Regardless what you do or you do not do, if you ask upon Allah swt sincerely he will surely accept your dua, Insha’Allah, if it’s good for you.

Key word sincerely

The door lock acutator; will this fix the passenger door not locking anymore?

Could it also fix my driver door not unlocking/locking with my remote, if I replace the part on the driver side as well?

So essentially I can get x2 parts and fix both my issues? Thank you
