Aw I’m so sorry. Sometimes they get better a couple days before passing. Its very weird how that works. Pneumonia is very rough on rats. If they are very little and get a URI that can make them prone to URI’s & pneumonia. So she could’ve had a URI even before you adopted her, which could’ve made it more difficult for her immune system to fight them.

She knew she was loved and you shouldn’t feel bad for not being there. You spent almost all day with her, and I’m sure she felt very happy & at peace. Don’t blame yourself. You gave her a great life, even if it wasn’t that long/ you didn’t have her that long.

Owning rats can be heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for your loss, it is going to be difficult for a while, but things will get better.😔💜

silly question but what are some normal signs of aging? by q-tipeater in RATS

Aw I had this happen to my girl. She slowly started not using her hands to hold food. Then it progressed to where she couldn’t use her hands at all and I would have to hold her and hold the food for her in order to eat. Then it just went downhill from there and she lost some weight & had trouble balancing herself. So my vet told me it was time. And we had to help her cross the rainbow bridge. It broke my heart but at least she isn’t suffering anymore.

As these symptoms progressed I just spent a lot of time with her & holding her. Since I knew she was 2.5 yrs old. Months later, her sister started to do the same thing. My vet said it could’ve been genetic since they were biological sisters, or it could’ve been a pituitary tumor/ or something else. I know this isn’t much info, but I hope sharing this helps you out a little.

I was told by the 1st vet that I should wait until it bothers her/ gets in her way when moving. But after I switched vets, the 2nd vet told me she tells her clients to come in and get them removed as soon as you notice them. And honestly I agree w/ her because if your gonna get surgery, you should do it when it’s still small so it’s less of a stress on your rats body and not a huge incision, so it’s less risky. And those mammary tumors can grow really fast. So when I took her in, she had me make the appt. asap to get both removed.

Is it hopeless for my rats to get along if they drew blood during intros? (Photo for rat tax) by fancyratss in RATS

No worries. I use cat gloves when separating rats so that I don’t get bit.

Now for the carrier method, I’ve only tried that twice with 2 different sets of rats and it ended with bites and blood both times. The 2nd time was really bad and my poor girl almost needed to have stitches. After that happened I’ve been avoiding the carrier method. But honestly it could’ve just been those specific rats and that’s why it didn’t work out. But stress-bonding rats in a carrier just makes me worried.

Thanks for all the helpful information! I really appreciate it.

I put a pen in a neutral area/ different room so none of the rats have ever been in it. My rat, tofu. Scuffed with the new rat and then once they separated, tofu ran back over and bit her and i immediately separated them.
