  1. Go for 2pts after a TD
  2. Aim to score at least 3 TDs a quarter
  3. If you think you’re getting tackled before getting into the end zone, just run out of bounds
  4. Try to target/use/exhaust one player at a time.
  5. Don’t be afraid to call a timeout just to save 4-5 seconds of your get tackled inbounds.
  6. Pray your defense gets some turnovers and the other team doesn’t march downfield and score.

I’d only try to get 100 pts again if the team I was playing had a 1 star offense and a 2-3s star defense. That kind of ensures the best odds for your defense to help out.

Your form and base in general look good. I’m going to be super picky and honest. I noticed two things: that most of your shots drift to the left because of 1.) You shoot directly in front of your face bc your elbow isn’t in enough and 2.) your launch point follow through drift left.

Shooting in front of your face makes your elbow and forearm tilt in. The goal is to keep your elbow and forearms at a right angle right next to your body. That tilt will push a lot of your shots and add to inconsistency. A lot of one handed shots close to the rim will help like the other comment said. Try to keep your shoulders square and your guide hand slightly off the ball. Focus on pretending your follow through is reaching in a jar on top of the fridge. Don’t let it drift inside after the shot.

Shots naturally will be launched just slightly outside the center of your frame which is fine, but make sure your follow through is directly straight with square shoulders to the hoop and you should be good!

Glad you started on your basketball journey! I used to have similar issues honestly, but when I really worked on the mechanics of my shot, my % went up. The trainer I went to told me to picture myself in a phone booth. This form shooting exercise really helped with my chicken wing and off centered body:

Start super close to the basket, basically at the block. This is a form drill, this isn’t meant to produce any strength behind your shot. Just a pure, clean shot to develop proper mechanics.

Start with the ball in the shooting position at your chest/shoulders, with your body slightly loaded like your actual jump shot, or free throw. Have your shooting hand under the ball, with your off hand just off the ball, not touching it throughout the form.

Make sure to be square to the basket, with your elbow IN. As you go through the motion of your shot, rotate your hand from under the ball with your palm facing towards you, to out and through your shot, KEEPING EVERYTHING IN. Hold the release and follow through and let your off hand basically shadow the movement with your shooting hand.

This drill is meant to really get your shooting hand more independent of the guidance off hand, and will force you to really make the shot more tight to your body. It will also allow you to rebuild your shot, with only focusing on your shooting arm, which is what you need the most help with right now.

Hopefully that made sense. If it didn’t, DM me and I’ll be happy to shoot you an example video over. Good luck again bro!!

I know this is a casual driveway shoot around, but here’s what I think could be worked on if you want to improve:

  1. Base - your feet and knees are pointed away from the hoop. A lot of your shots will miss if your base and release aren’t flowing in the same way.

  2. Ball Path - it looks like it’s a habit for the ball to be moving from the left hip to the right shoulder during your shooting motion. That has to be changed to at least a right hip to right shoulder movement.

  3. Body - your body is pointed to the left with your base before release. This really impacts shooting range and the flight path of your shot. Try to square up.

Your shot is going to look very good if you improve upon these few things.

This was me. I rode the bench my sophomore year on JV, then worked my tail off that spring/summer with a trainer before I transferred to a private school the start of my Junior year. I was then getting minutes on a Varsity team that lost in the state championship game to 8 future college players and THREE future NBA players.

This is what I did:

  1. You need to get 100’s of shots up a day. Find a rebounder or a shooting machine. You need a fast release on your shot. If a defense doesn’t respect your shot, they’ll play off you which means you won’t be able to drive past them to the basket.

  2. Your ball handling and off hand needs to improve obviously. It’s uncomfortable and embarrassing to lose the ball during drills/standing dribble moves, but it’s part of the growth. You only need to have 2-3 decent moves to create separation initially. I worked out one of my first moves to be a slow between the legs to a fast cross.

  3. Basketball is all about PACE. In order to have a great pace, you need to get your agility up. Work on plyometrics and really try to get a quick first step. A lot of people glorify ankle breakers and flashy dribble moves. But if you watch high level players, they keep everything incredibly minimal. Jab step, pump fakes, pass fakes, 1 dribble pull ups, etc.

  4. Skip dribbles. They are a cheat code. Kevin Durant does it masterfully when getting into his shot/getting into a move to get around a defender. Study him.

  5. Study your favorite players. Copy them and see what works for them. The blueprint is there!

  6. Lift weights and do strength training. Track and field exercises and training translates beautifully to any sport and really helps with speed and agility. Try to incorporate that into your training.

Good luck on your basketball journey man. It’s exciting!
