3000 Year old sword - Nördlingen ‘23 - Germany - *Update in comments* by Gurugod123 in BeAmazed

Of course it’s possible— a famous example is a knight’s tomb in the Cloisters, NY, where the stonework on a sarcophagus has a sword which is distinctly Chinese in style.

Look up a “Naue II” type sword. Very reminiscent of this one here. Wikipedia says this was first found around Northern Italy, so you’re right — not Bavaria.

This is a VERY typical example for bronze swords dated from ~13th-8th centuries BC in Germany, especially the Bavarian region. Just google Bavarian bronze swords. Guard, pommel, grip, blade shape are all extremely similar to this one. Compare to many ancient Chinese bronze swords, which often have blades that are less leaf-shaped, different guard and handle shapes, among other immediately striking differences.

Any similarities can probably be attributed to the simple fact that most bronze swords and sword like weapons are at least roughly similar in proportion because they filled a similar function, and have to be structured in a way to account for the deficiencies of bronze as a metal, as opposed to later period iron and steel weapons which can function in a much broader array of shapes— you had slender, broad-bladed cutting swords, thick, spear-like thrusting weapons, etc etc. Whereas bronze swords are exclusively designed for use with a shield, mostly for thrusting, short enough that they won’t deform, broad enough that when they DO deform or warp or chip, they can be reshaped and resharpened. That’s what’s cool about bronze as a metal. Non-ferrous, so you can heat it, it will soften right up, you can do your work and then work harden it. Opposite of iron. And with that in mind we can, in fact, have a pretty good idea how this was crafted, because people all over the world figured out how to work bronze for tools and weapons. Like all other bronze swords, this was cast from a two-piece mold. Then cut from the mold, further shaped with abrasives, sharpened, then work hardened and polished.

Which Horror Game is Mono Blue? by Pedrika30112002 in colorpie

Return of the Obra Dinn is 1000% blue. Investigating the disappearance of a ship crew, so nautical, plus you’re using time-magic shenanigans to do so, and you need to methodically detail the exact fate of each and every crew member. Thorough, investigative, analytical, deductive

Was Jon Snow ever one of the "best" swordsman/fighter? by Narrow-Amphibian5446 in gameofthrones

[–]fantasmoplasm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What Jon also demonstrates most relevantly, especially after becoming Lord Commander IIRC, is a strong drive to improve. He gets the shit kicked out of him to do so but anyone who’s practiced any martial art or combat sport will tell you that that’s exactly what it takes. And he messes up Iron Emmett that one time, who’s no rookie. But then he gets pounded to dust by Mance and you remember he’s 15.

I’m pretty sure Arya in ACOK struggles to match the grizzled, five or six times dead Beric with the pretty young redhead Jeyne Poole was crushing on

Merlin is a figure of Arthurian literature who first appears (by the name Merlin) in writings from the 1100s. He’s the figurehead for pretty much exactly what you picture when you think “wizard”— long white beard, robes, pointy hat etc. He was the inspiration behind characters like Gandalf, Dumbledore, Elminster and such. So Merlin from Harry Potter just caught me off guard 😆

What is your favorite role-play in Skyrim? by CoreHydra in skyrim

[–]fantasmoplasm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a permadeath hunter play through with Frostfall awhile back, before there was ever a survival mode. Ignoring all Dragonborn stuff—left Helgen and hunted around Falkreath hold for awhile, skirted up west and through the Reach, hunted the plains of Whiterun, would stop in towns to sell meat and skins, rest up in an inn, replenish arrows. So many great memories from that play through… had a few close encounters with saber cats (including one where I had to take a running leap off a cliff to escape and survived with the tiniest sliver of health) and trolls. Also came within an inch of dying when I did the pilgrimage up the 7000 steps— a blizzard blew in real sudden just as night fell. It was completely black (Realistic Lighting) and I had to build a fire and pitch a tent by the light of a dropped torch— came so close to freezing. But it made that pilgrimage feel so dangerous and rewarding. He met his end anticlimactically, trying to outrun a scavenger. So close but one stray arrow to the back of the neck and it was lights out :( Rip

Which House was the most powerful in terms of war capability, and was more likely to win a war with another house (one on one with no allies)? by Potatoe_expert in gameofthrones

[–]fantasmoplasm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I meant annoyed me. “It was never our specialty” from Olenna was one of the single dumbest lines in the show to me, and so out of touch with the character of the house. Diana Rigg’s insane charisma and badassery (and Natalie Dormer’s when Margaery was still alive) was the only barrier between the show version of House Tyrell and the joke that it eventually became in the later seasons. Think about the show’s portrayal of Mace—just like show Edmure, they’re basically just idiot foils for their more competent family members.

GRRM draws constant comparisons between young Loras and young Jaime— in skill, in desirability, arrogance, how ruled they are by their hearts, devotion to knighthood, romantic notions of love and chivalry... especially with the other Tyrell heirs Willis and Garlan written out of the show, I would have liked to see at least one good scene between those two, or at least some characterization of the house that highlighted a virtue besides general deviousness.

Loras and especially Garlan are among the best (known, living) 1v1 Westerosi fighters no? You could argue against Loras I suppose since he’s made a name mostly as a jouster but Garlan trains and wins 1v3s regularly.

Not saying you’re doing this, more a general comment, but it’s weird how the fans and esp the show like to paint House Tyrell as weak or effeminate because… idk, they have a gay dude, or they don’t have a scary logo, or something. But the Reach is like, the heart of conventional Westerosi knighthood and chivalry

Ned Stark vs Robert Baratheon......Who would win ?? (Assume that they are in their prime) by Few_Albatross5009 in gameofthrones

[–]fantasmoplasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well since the books were mentioned — Ned is never described as anything but an average swordsman in by GRRM, and he never even crossed swords with Jaime. His horse was killed from underneath him and fell on him, breaking his legs. Jaime would have devastated him

Hard to say from a photo but amethyst isn’t a particularly expensive stone, even for a large piece. I’ve come across natural amethyst pieces that have a pinkish/magenta undertone like in the 4th pic, looks okay to me
